Nayattu

D54 is back following our favourite policeman, Joju George, in the survival thriller Nayattu (2021). This story packs in everything - an edge-of-your seat manhunt, class dynamics that erupt violently, and a political machine that is insurmountable - all leading to an inevitable and tragic conclusion. Joju George is terrific as the world weary police officer who sees the world turning against him, and Kunchacko Boban and Nimisha Sajayan deliver deeply affecting performances that leave you shattered. This film is not for the faint of heart, but its realism, its performances, and the mesmerising cinematography and score, make it a must watch.

#malayalammovie #mollywood #malayalamactor

Romancham

Join us as we review the 2023 Malayalam comedy-horror hit Romancham. Heavy on the comedy and light on the horror, this film is an absolute joy. From its gorgeous cinematography to its roaring soundtrack, Romancham reminds us how much fun you can have, even when you’re being haunted by a malevolent spirit summoned through a ouija board. But what elevates this film are the amazing performances of its ensemble cast whose personalities, friendship and interactions feel so authentic and true to life. Throw in Arjun Ashokan’s truly terrifying smile, and some literal toilet humour, and you’ve got pure Malayalam dynamite.

Aparna Gopinath holds her own beside Mammootty, portraying an ambitious journalist drawn to Raghavan’s intellect and eager to make a name for herself in an uncompromising industry. We discuss how the film builds up tension towards a flawlessly executed ending, the deeper themes explored, and how it expertly subverts our expectations. It’s getting all too common now - but this is another Mammootty classic!

Mukundan Unni Associates

D54 returns to Malayalam cinema with the hugely entertaining ‘Mukunthan Unni Associates’ (2022). Putting the ‘black’ in black comedy, Vineet Srinivasan delivers a masterful performance as an ambitious and deeply sociopathic lawyer who decides that success is his only option. We discuss the film’s depiction of the legal professional, the wonderfully paced story, the terrific supporting cast, and how debut director Abhinav Nayak keeps the audience transfixed despite the increasingly heinous actions of our anatagonist. Mukunthan Unni Associates paints a relentlessly bleak view of the world. You’ll laugh, you’ll be infuriated and you’ll sit waiting for justice to arrive. It may not, but injustice has never been so enjoyable.

Music by: March Behalf Cain

Find us on:

YouTube | Instagram | Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Twitter | Tik Tok

Avatar: The Way of Water

Join D54 as we review the film we forgot we were waiting for - Avatar 2: The Way of the Water. We discuss the phenonmeon that was the original Avartar, our expectations going into the sequel, the 13-year delay and James Cameron’s filmography. While we reserve our criticisms for the second half, here we discuss in the groundbreaking and awe-inspiring world of Pandora, how Cameron pushed the limits of film-making, and why no other film can come close to reaching these visual heights. Later on, we discuss where the Way of Water goes wrong. There’s the bloated runtime, the familiar villain, a seemingly unending third act, and half-baked themes. There are also flashes of brilliance here, but even more missed opportunities to have told a story as remarkable as the visuals. We discuss what’s next for the Avatar franchise, and the Way of the D54 scale.

Music by: March Behalf Cain

Find us on:

YouTube | Instagram | Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Twitter | Tik Tok
