The Future of Marketing is Product Placement

I stumbled across this article on Gizmodo and was sucked into reading it by the headline and the first few lines of the article. The headline is “North Face Apologizes for Showing Us the Future of Marketing” and here is a short quote, “This week The North Face pulled off a clever marketing stunt that continues to deliver. Even following the company’s retraction and apology, the glittering underhandedness of the campaign will inspire marketing scum for generations.” Hah! I discuss what happened on this episode.
Do you want to know when you will die? Believe it or not, scientists have developed a blood test that predicts whether or not you will die from natural causes over the next 10 years. Is the future of work at home or at the office?

Do you work in an office or from home? According to a 2017 Gallup study, 43% of Americans report spending at least some time working remotely, so chances are you do some work from home. Depending on who you ask, that’s a good thing. Working from home allows workers the flexibility to maintain that careful work-life balance and companies benefit from the increased productivity. So, working remote is a win-win all around or… is it? (dun, dun, dun…) In this episode of “The Jim Stroud Podcast” I report on the good and bad of remote work while asking the question, is the future of work at home or at the office? Download the show notes at JimStroud.com.

Support this podcast at — https://app.redcircle.com/shows/ebc7d2ce-6c88-46bd-80bb-fbe551a8ae60/donations

The Future of Work is Racism

The demographics of America are rapidly changing and where there are differences there is inevitable conflict. Some of the issues are a result of ignorance to the differences represented in various cultures and as a result, racism rears its ugly head to diverse degrees. I discuss the state of racism in the American workplace and why I think it will become worse in years to come. At the same time, I defend my country because I do not believe it is immutably racist. Tune in for a very thought provoking episode.

Support this podcast at — https://app.redcircle.com/shows/ebc7d2ce-6c88-46bd-80bb-fbe551a8ae60/donations

I Don't Trust The Media. This is Why...

www.JimStroud.com - Trust in the mainstream news media is at an all-time low. Why? I do some research and now I count myself among those who have a skeptical view on everything I see, read and hear from the mainstream media. Why are we so lonely? I blame social media.

Can I ask you a personal question? Are you lonely? A recent study by CIGNA suggests that you are. They surveyed more than 20,000 U.S. adults -18 years and older and find out that nearly half of Americans sometimes or always feel alone, One in four Americans rarely or never feel as though there are people who really understand them, Two in five Americans sometimes or always feel that their relationships are not meaningful and One in five people report they rarely or never feel close to people. Why is this? I blame social media. The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Business

Quite recently, I had the very good fortune of connecting with Swathi Young on LinkedIn the other day. She is the founder of TechNotch solutions, a technology strategy and management consulting company in Washington, DC. Swathi Young helps companies leverage the power of machine learning to solve business problems; for example, fraud detection and customer service intelligent agents. And to her credit, she is quite the expert on AI and a number of emerging technologies.

On the podcast we discussed the part ethics plays in artificial intelligence; especially in relation to autonomous vehicles and facial recognition. With the possibility of bias in AI, how can we safeguard the public from the potential harm of predictive policing? How can job seekers complain about algorithmic discrimination when they are unaware it even exists? And just what is "Explainable AI?" Should companies be for or against it?

Tune in for an interesting and very thought provoking episode of The Jim Stroud Podcast! What happens to your data when you die?

Okay, now this is interesting. Facebook may eventually have more dead users than living ones. According to a study by Oxford Researchers, Facebook will have 4.9 billion deceased users on its system by the year 2100. If Facebook’s current growth rate continues, the dead would outpace the living by 2070. And this brings to mind, an interesting question… What happens to your data after you die? I’ll share a few insights in this episode. | Click here to download the transcript. Freedom of Thought

In the future, will we have the freedom to think as we like without fear of economic or judicial reprisals? I hope so. Yet, recent technological advances give me room to pause. In this episode, I discuss scientific advances that can literally read your mind and create pictures based on your thoughts. Intrigued? If so, prepare to be amazed by the other discoveries I stumbled upon this past week. Science fiction is quickly becoming science fact. Can our laws keep up? What about our personal freedoms? Mo' Data, Mo' Problems

If you want to learn something truly fascinating that you might not have considered before, go to your favorite search engine and look up the phrase, "big data is a civil rights issue." As you scan through the search results and glean tidbits of data from the descriptions, or skim the various articles, you will no doubt see that the world is sitting on a powder keg of outrage. Algorithms and automation threaten to divide my country more profoundly than any political unrest around civil war statues, rumors of Russian collusion or fake hate crimes ever could. Indeed, when it comes to racial disparity in terms of opportunity or various life advancements, nothing is more injurious than the unintended consequences of machine learning. When I consider the effects on society and the labor market, I shudder at the pending reality of it all.

Just over a year ago, I wrote an article on big data and speculated on the societal implications. I called it “This is Why Big Data is a Civil Rights Issue.” Now, in this podcast, I am revisiting that topic and going a bit deeper in my analysis. Transhumanism and Discrimination in the Future of Work

There has been a lot of talk about diversity and inclusion as it pertains to the workplace. Yet, as I review several of the articles linked to from the search results, no one seems to be talking about a new demographic of workers that will no doubt disrupt the future world of work. What is the population I’m talking about? What is the one characteristic they all share? Well, in a word – transhumanism. The Future of Student Loan Debt

There is a crisis of college student loan debt that is mind-blowing in its scope. Let me share some numbers with you: 44.7 million Americans have student loan debt representing $1.56 trillion owed to the government and of that HUGE amount of money, 11.5% of student loans are 90 days or more delinquent or in default. Add to these facts that students are still applying to US Universities with no sign of slowing down, at least according to the statistics portal – Statista. So, the cycle of student loan debt will continue or, will it? I happen to think that the future of student loan debt is no more long-term debt, thanks to "income sharing." Tune in to find out what I mean. | Transcript is available at www.JimStroud.com - Subscribe now!

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jim-stroud/support

Support this podcast at — https://app.redcircle.com/shows/ebc7d2ce-6c88-46bd-80bb-fbe551a8ae60/donations

Who will win the Minimum Wage Fight for 15?

The Fight for 15 is an American political movement advocating for the federal minimum wage to be raised to $15 per hour. The federal minimum wage was set at $7.25 per hour in 2009, and as of 2019 it has not been increased since. The movement has involved strikes by workers in child care, home healthcare, airport, gas station, convenience stores but most notably with fast food workers. What will happen if or when $15 is the minimum wage for all of the United States? I speculate the national and global consequences in this episode of The Jim Stroud podcast. | Transcript is available at www.JimStroud.com.

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jim-stroud/support

Support this podcast at — https://app.redcircle.com/shows/ebc7d2ce-6c88-46bd-80bb-fbe551a8ae60/donations

Big Brother Goes Shopping

Did you know that when you shop, big brother is watching? Major retailers spend a lot of money on a lot of technology to attract your business and persuade you to spend more and more and more of your money. While that may not come as a surprise to you, the extent of how deeply retail technology tracks you may have you raising your eyebrows. In this episode, I share several case studies on how big data is being used to monitor your spending and persuade your buying habits. | Please support my Starbucks habit by dropping something in my virtual tip jar. (https://anchor.fm/jim-stroud/support) Thank you.

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jim-stroud/support

Support this podcast at — https://app.redcircle.com/shows/ebc7d2ce-6c88-46bd-80bb-fbe551a8ae60/donations

Facebook Is Not Your Friend

2018 was a banner year for data breaches and 2019 is already off to a great start. At the center of privacy scandals last year, was Facebook. It seemed like every other week there was a hacking issue or ethical misconduct around their user data. So, does this mean that Facebook users are on the decline? In a word, no. Despite all the data drama, Facebook is doing all right. So, what does it all mean for user privacy on Facebook and other tech companies with millions of users? I discuss that and something far more concerning than hackers stealing your data, predictive analytics. Barcoding the Homeless

Do you give money to the homeless people you meet on the street? I do, sometimes. But, mostly I don’t and that’s because I think it will be spent on some sort of vice and not on say… food or shelter. This is why I prefer to donate to a charity. If I give it to a charity, I can make a reasonable assumption that the money I donate will go to the intended purpose of getting someone the help they need. But what if there was a way to give funds directly to homeless people you encounter on the street with the guarantee that it would be spent responsibly? Well, I've found a very intriguing technical option that promises to do that very thing. Discussing Trump in the Workplace

What happens when politics is discussed in the workplace? A recent survey says that American workers are stressed out by any and all chatter about Donald Trump and politics in general. Despite that fact, with another presidential election on the horizon, there is no sign of that trend changing. So, what are you as a worker to do? Moreover, what can managers do (if anything) to curtail political discussions that can divide an office, much like the USA is these days? Would you ride in a car without a driver?

Would you ride in a self-driving car? Yeah, neither would I. As far as the public at large is concerned, they wouldn’t either. Santa Claus & the Free Gift of Universal Basic Income
The Christmas season is upon us which means, among other things, Santa Claus will be delivering toys and gifts to all the good little boys and girls around the world. Free gifts are one of the reasons why Christmas is so deeply appreciated by the masses. Can you imagine if Christmas was more than once a year? What if it once a month and all year round people were receiving free gifts in the mail; specifically, a check for $500. Sound nice? Well, its about to happen in Stockton, CA. Microchipping Employees is a No-good, Horrible and Terrible Idea

Human Cloning: The Answer to Talent Scarcity
Earlier this year, something extraordinary was being reported in the news. For the first time in American history, there were more jobs than people out of work. To be specific, in June 2018, there were 6.7 million job openings but only just 6.4 million available workers to fill them; this according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employers have been complaining for years about the inability to find workers with the right training for the positions available. In the meantime, companies are adding other incentives to retain workers and pull new ones in. As the demand grows, workers have gotten more confident about leaving their current positions for better ones. So, what is HR to do? One solution might be... Human Cloning! Tune in to find out why. Research and resources related to this resource can be found at JimStroud.com.
