Episode 0034 | Crowdfunding Stories: Dale Backus & Ohsnap

We’re back atcha today with another good one that includes a very impressive guest who is also literally live on Kickstarter right now! Our client Dale Backus has developed a wildly-popular phone grip that has been raising thousands of dollars per day to challenge a complacent industry leader. Let’s see what we can learn from his crowdfunding story…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Entrepreneurs don’t always pioneer new markets but sometimes substantially improve existing products by providing new-and-better competition.

2. Although it’s usually best to start with a minimally viable product (MVP), some products require more-than-minimal functionality to effectively compete.

3. Crowdfunding can provide a wealth of useful data, including data that helps with manufacturing forecasts.

4. Customer surveys should be worded very carefully in order to obtain accurate actionable data, or else they might lead surveyors astray.

5. Backer updates and other communication should be authentic in presenting both the product and its creator.

6. Effective marketing can’t compensate for a flawed product, but a great product will benefit from effective marketing.

7. Successful startups need to continue to improve their products/services or else they might allow competitors to overtake them.

✍️ Click here for this episode’s complete show notes!

----------------------------------------------------------------

👉 We want to help as many people as we can; so, if this podcast helps you, then we urge you to please…

• Subscribe to it on our website so that you don't miss an episode!

• Discuss it in our private Facebook group with us and fellow entrepreneurs! Episode 0033 | Ultimate Crowdfunding Pre-Launch Checklist

As promised, we’re going to break out our newly-minted Ultimate Crowdfunding Pre-Launch Checklist! And, after this episode, we’re going to give it away to you for free… no catches. And you can start using it to prepare yourself to take your next big idea to the next level. So, hang in there until the end and let’s get started!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Entrepreneurs should commit to success, improve both their character and their competence, obey the Golden Rule, build a good team, lead them well, and focus on customers.

2. Crowdfunding campaigners should offer the crowdfunding community a minimally-viable tangible product that is sufficiently new to them, that is neither too “niche” nor too localized, that has been refined through market-testing into a functional prototype, that enjoys an appealing form, an easily-pronounceable positive name, and adequate legal protection.

3. Crowdfunding campaigners should set minimal funding goals (and consider “stretch” goals) while assembling rewards packages from their core product up to pricier options, each with persuasive descriptions, plus prices ending in 9; prices should accommodate production costs, platform fees, marketing costs, collection/transfer fees, data management, “free” packaging/shipping, returns, taxes, and the unexpected, along with both “early bird” and bulk discounts.

4. Crowdfunding campaigners should join Kickstarter and/or Indiegogo, familiarize themselves with these websites’ rules and features, back some projects, and plan to launch on Kickstarter if at all possible.

5. Crowdfunding campaigners should allow at least 2 months to prepare, avoid campaigning during either December or possibly August, expect unexpected delays, launch either in-season or when ready between Monday and Wednesday (except on major US holidays) while it’s still morning in the USA, campaign for 30-45 days, and finish between Wednesday and Friday before it becomes evening in the USA.

6. Crowdfunding campaigners should practice their “sales pitch” to perfection, appealing to both emotion and reason by showing-and-telling both features-and-benefits through plain honest conversational language friendly to a global audience, supported by positive reviews, and then translate that pitch into persuasive campaign media.

7. Crowdfunding campaigners should familiarize themselves with analytics, and arrange as many pledges as possible in advance from personal or business contacts, e-mail leads, social-media fans, social-media influencers, reporters, and others, while preparing to engage in post-launch marketing plus effective customer service.

Episode 0032 | Handling Legal Matters during Startup Phase

In this episode, you’re going to hear from our very own in-house legal counsel here at Funded Today, Thomas Alvord. He’s going to give you the insider’s look at everything you should be considering when it comes to business law, contracts, and just running your new business. So let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Entrepreneurs should prioritize developing a viable business over protecting themselves legally, as the latter is pointless without (and funded by) the former, and they should expect legal issues to grow in proportion to their business size.

2. Entrepreneurs in the USA should minimize their taxes by chartering a “holding company” to own their business, limit their personal liability by incorporating their business (perhaps initially as an LLC that transitions eventually into either a C corp or an S corp), obtain a federal EIN for their business, and transact all business in its name.

3. Business owners should choose their first hires (who may become their biggest competitors) carefully, hire them with non-compete agreements, and always treat their employees well.

4. Business owners should compose brief clear contracts with good mechanisms for resolving disputes, and always try to resolve disputes amicably before resorting to either arbitration or expensive lawsuits.

5. Business owners should seek legal counsel as necessary, but minimize use of lawyers, as they are expensive and may sometimes prioritize their own interests above their clients’ interests.

6. Crowdfunding campaigners should ensure that they are not violating any intellectual property rights before launching campaigns, but avoid paying excessive attention to filing for trademarks and copyrights and patents (which may include provisional patents).

7. Amazon sellers should obtain US trademarks, which will enable them to enhance their Amazon listings with valuable “enhanced brand content.”

Episode 0031 | Crowdfunding Stories: Rob Peck & FlexSafe

As promised, we’re bringing on one of our past clients, namely Rob Peck of AquaVault. He’s got a very unique perspective and I think you’re going to love it. So are you ready to learn directly from an actual Kickstarter creator who raised over $200,000 on a project? What about learning more about how to absolutely crush a “Shark Tank” appearance? Or are you just curious about the day-to-day hustle-and-grind of entrepreneurship? If so, then today’s episode is for you! Let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Entrepreneurship involves faith, capital, and persistence despite figurative headaches.

2. Entrepreneurs should identify a sufficiently-common problem (while noting that cures are easier to sell than prevention) that nobody else is solving well enough, innovate a product to solve that problem, and engage in market testing (perhaps at trade shows) to ensure that their product is actually desirable, as well as to refine it—and such feedback will prove whether-or-not an idea is truly worth pursuing.

3. Entrepreneurs may use crowdfunding not only to raise funds to start mass-production, but also to obtain both feedback and “brand ambassadors,” plus to show proof-of-concept that can leverage a better deal on “Shark Tank.”

4. Entrepreneurs may use “Shark Tank” to get both a good deal and good publicity, but should note that they likely won’t ever get televised unless they show something sufficiently different and/or entertaining that will appeal well to television audiences.

5. Entrepreneurs should perpetually reach out to relevant retailers and reporters and interest groups and such.

6. Entrepreneurs should note that growth is both expensive and challenging; they may want to form specific long-term plans to leverage what they already have in order to obtain loans to fund what they know for sure will work, and they should always seek deals that are mutually-beneficial to all parties involved.

7. Entrepreneurs should manage others with the right balance between oversight and autonomy.

Episode 0030 | Crowdfunding Stories: Tammy Rant & TushBaby

Have you ever wanted to listen to an actual Kickstarter creator who raised over $100,000 on a project? What about learning the ins-and-outs of a successful appearance on “Shark Tank”? Or, are you just curious about the life of an entrepreneur? If so, then today’s episode is going to literally rock your world! Let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Desire is vital, and positive thinking is helpful, but thoughts without action accomplish nothing; thankfully, it’s never too late to apply yourself, excel, and achieve success.

2. If you’re feeling frustrated with trying to find a solution to your problems in the marketplace, then others may feel similarly, which could indicate a good entrepreneurial opportunity, which you may explore through both market research and product development.

3. It helps to prepare oneself through both research and practice before doing something important, and to do it with an experienced partner for support.

4. Crowdfunding campaigns are good for not only raising funds but also validating ideas.

5. Crowdfunding campaigners need to market themselves to attract attention, and should prepare to defend their intellectual property against cheap knockoffs.

6. “Shark Tank” can provide a startup with mutually-beneficial partnership plus great publicity, but only if the “sharks” respond favorably to it; otherwise, it could hurt.

7. “Shark Tank” might accept your audition, record your appearance before its “sharks,” and even buy equity in your company, but won’t necessarily show your segment on television unless NBC can edit it to appear sufficiently dramatic.

Episode 0029 | Customer Service from Backers to e-Shoppers

What does it take to manage customer service? Why is customer service more important now than ever before? And finally, what are the best ways to ensure that you, too, can provide world-class customer service? Let’s dive right in…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. It’s hard to maintain superiority in products/services indefinitely and, whenever your competitors offer comparable benefits-and-costs, customers will rely upon other factors to make purchasing decisions, such as how well they know and like and trust you, plus how well you treat them.

2. Customer service is vital in encouraging customer loyalty, along with positive reviews, which are the most powerful form of marketing—and customer-centered businesses tend to thrive.

3. Service starts with actively nurturing love for our neighbors as ourselves, which naturally leads us to act in accordance with the Golden Rule by seeking mutually-beneficial business relationships, and it also starts with us and then works outward through our organizational structure.

4. Customer service is mostly an operations job not a sales job (although it may benefit from some salesmanship), and it should remain part of everyone’s job even if dedicated specialists are hired to oversee it.

5. Customer service improves whenever it’s measured, including through brief customer-satisfaction surveys.

6. Customer service generally involves setting proper expectations, communicating effectively (which may involve audio or visual communication), and proactively resolving concerns with empathy—and empathy is facilitated by avoiding presumptions, listening well to understand, and maintaining a positive attitude despite challenges.

7. Customer service in crowdfunding involves effective use of welcomes, updates, comments, surveys, and farewells.

Episode 0028 | Freedom in Time, Money, Body, Mind, and Spirit

In this episode, we’re waxing philosophical once more. The topic: FREEDOM. The reason: we think that it’s the most important word in the world to focus on. And today, we’ll show you why...

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Bondage is sometimes entirely self-imposed, but we can discipline ourselves to escape this sort.

2. We should each value freedom, which allows us to achieve our greatest potential for happiness, although such results will differ from person to person in their details.

3. We should each freely choose to clarify the details of the sort of life that we ultimately want to live, devise a specific plan to achieve it, and start immediately to follow that plan.

4. We can freely choose activities that will enable ourselves to become freer in spending our time and/or money without health constraints, and also in enjoying feeling inner peace without either guilt or regret, and to maintain proper harmony between all such aspects of our lives.

5. Gaining freedom in one respect may require sacrificing some freedom in other respects, and not all sacrifices are worthwhile, so we shouldn’t sacrifice recklessly.

Episode 0027 | Life After Crowdfunding: e-Commerce Basics

In this episode, we’re circling back around to our extremely popular “Life After Crowdfunding” series with perhaps our most practical episode in the series so far, which is about how to turn your website into a cash machine. Let’s dive right in!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Entrepreneurs should reject “entremyopia” to embrace realistic expectations, including that all startups will face challenges, but that greater challenges can potentially precede greater rewards.

2. It’s good to offer your product/service on your website, but it’s better to enhance that website with effective analytics code, optimized sales media that emphasizes your unique selling proposition (USP) to maximize your website’s conversion rate (which is typically 1%-4%), and both SEO and persuasive marketing (which will be harder to do profitably for cheaper items) through ads, e-mail, affiliates, et cetera, to help draw paying traffic to itself.

3. Collecting customers’ e-mailing addresses and then remarketing to them via e-mail can help you to build a beneficial long-term business relationship with them while obtaining additional sales from them at low cost, all of which can maximize their lifetime revenue to your business.

4. Your initial business goal should be to achieve profitability through a breakeven CPA at minimum, which will be worse than it was on Kickstarter and may require you to spend capital at-a-loss for a while to build a sizable-enough customer base—and you should wait until your business is more mature before starting to develop its branding, which yields results that are harder to quantify.

5. Your business can grow better by offering multiple products/services through multiple channels with multiple payment methods, et cetera, and offering cross-sells, upsells, et cetera.

Episode 0026 | Life After Crowdfunding: Amazon & Jungle Scout

In this episode, we have a wonderful guest—Greg Mercer, who is the founder of Jungle Scout. We’re going to discuss how tools like Jungle Scout can give you an edge over your competition on Amazon.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Pursue your passions for work, as long as you can earn a living from them—and, after you’ve achieved financial stability, you can focus more on working for fun than for profit.

2. Entrepreneurship requires persistence despite failure, and benefits from a mentality of both abundance and generosity.

3. Episode 0025 | Life After Crowdfunding: Amazon Presentation

In this episode, we are continuing our “Life After Crowdfunding” series by discussing how to make big money on Amazon by optimizing your listings. Let’s jump right in…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Amazon listing titles should include the brand, the model, its attributes, and its benefits, while incorporating appropriate keywords for SEO determined through research.

2. Amazon listing bullet-points should each introduce a single concept in ALL CAPS and then detail that concept in a paragraph that both sells and aids SEO, providing information that’s thorough enough that potential customers don’t need to look elsewhere for it.

3. Amazon sellers should register for a U. S. trademark so that they can register their brand with Amazon, which will enable them to control how distributors present their product, and also to enhance their own listing with branded content.

4. Amazon listings should incorporate “enhanced branded content,” which should typically include a main high-resolution “hero” image on a white background, plus seven additional images showing its size and/or usage (including “lifestyle” shots), along with a pitch video.

5. Amazon sellers should actively solicit (but not incentivize) reviews from crowdfunding backers and/or Amazon customers, which will boost sales while identifying problems.

6. Amazon listings should generally render it as easy as possible for customers to buy.

7. In optimizing your Amazon listing, you should focus firstly on maximizing its conversion rates so that it sells as effectively as possible, secondly on maximizing its SEO to attract “organic” traffic as effectively as possible, and thirdly on perfecting your marketing (which we may present in a future episode) to attract referral traffic as effectively as possible.

Episode 0024 | Becoming Self-Aware and Defining Success

In this episode, we are bringing you Zach’s special interview by Carson Jorgensen in his pretty-famous podcast “The Definition of Success.” Carson and Zach discuss quite a few things that are a little bit different than what we normally talk about in our podcast—they talk about business, life, happiness, and (probably most importantly) the whole idea of self-awareness. Let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. We should develop self-awareness about who we are, what we can already do well, what we need to improve, and what we want to become, all of which will facilitate both our success and our happiness.

2. Self-awareness is aided by feedback from others; we should humbly accept such feedback to the extent that it helps us to progress, but also refrain from worrying excessively about what others think about us such that it impedes our progress.

3. We should focus our attention NOT on what we either can’t or shouldn’t control, but on what we can control, learning to control it well, which will facilitate our freedom in various respects, along with our happiness.

4. We should genuinely be ourselves, but also persistently strive to become our best selves.

5. We should focus not on tearing ourselves down but on building ourselves up in all of the various aspects of our lives, which involves maintaining our motivation while focusing persistently upon improving one important thing at a time, measuring our progress until we’ve mastered it.

6. We should maintain a connection with our past selves, maintain empathy for other people, seek mutually-beneficial relationships with them, and remember that freely doing nice things for them might encourage them to do likewise for us.

7. We should evaluate our potential business partners very carefully, and wisely delegate business responsibilities to specialists.

Episode 0023 | Life After Crowdfunding: Amazon Intelligence

In this episode, we’re bringing back our very popular series “Life After Crowdfunding.” And today’s topic of Amazon is one of our favorites—it’s the 800-pound gorilla of e-commerce that you cannot ignore. Let’s dive right in!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Crowdfunding success doesn’t necessarily lead to e-commerce success.

2. Amazon provides a wealth of readily-available intelligence that can help entrepreneurs to gauge how much demand exists for a product, how well (or poorly) those demands are already being supplied by competitors, how intense and/or mature such competition is, and what prices they need to either match or beat, all of which may help them to avoid wasting their resources on developing products that people don’t want.

3. Amazon sellers can’t ask for a premium price without offering a premium product.

4. Amazon prices should cover an Amazon referral fee of usually 15%, and perhaps an Amazon fulfillment fee that varies according to product.

5. Amazon sellers should perfect their listing before their marketing, and then quickly accumulate high-rated reviews from customers to build a good reputation that will boost sales.

Episode 0022 | Living Happier through Stoic Philosophy

In this episode, we learn from Stoicism! Let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. We can live more happily by gleaning time-tested truths from great philosophers, including the Stoics, whose beliefs about pursuing happiness through virtue originated in ancient Greece, thrived in classical Rome, and continue to attract some modern adherents worldwide.

2. We should nurture gratitude for what we already have (whether time or things), and cheerfully use it well, while actively curbing our potentially-limitless desires for more, lest we allow our avarice to spiral out-of-control.

3. We should not worry obsessively about what we cannot control (like our past or our reputation or our mortality), but humbly accept it while instead focusing our attention on what we can control (like our present or our character or our time-usage).

4. Our thoughts help shape our outcomes, and our decisions determine our destiny; we should not mindlessly react to our circumstances as they arise but instead proactively “seize the day,” “live in the moment,” question our desires to reject any unworthy ones, focus our attention not on our difficulties but on the opportunities that accompany them, exercise our imagination to rehearse success rather than failure, and plan our future (including by preparing for misfortunes).

5. We generally know what we ought to do but we sometimes procrastinate committing ourselves to it fully; instead, we should immediately demand the best of ourselves and then exert our willpower and minds to become our best selves, which may require sacrifice.

Episode 0021 | Living Happier by Improving Perspective

In this episode, we’re talking about one of Zach’s most favorite things: the #1 reason why your life “sucks” right now—and what you can do about it! Let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Reality is objective, but perspective is subjective and may depend upon our frame-of-reference, and so our reference-points influence our perceptions, which influence our happiness.

2. Many qualities like wealth or achievement are relative across time-and-space.

3. Whenever we evaluate ourselves or evaluate others or compare ourselves with others, we should remember that each individual characteristic is merely a tiny part of a complex whole, that each of us usually succeeds better in some ways than in others, and that we don’t normally perceive the entire truth about anyone.

4. “The grass is always greener where it’s watered,” so we should strive to nurture good desires and thoughts, acknowledge opportunity and find hope in it, and persistently learn-and-improve toward our potential, while remembering that some successes may require substantial sacrifices.

5. Whenever we obtain unnecessary material possessions that we want, we then “need” to spend more on maintenance, we tend to grow accustomed to them and may even take them for granted, we may easily want more, and such desires can potentially spiral out-of-control unless we actively curb them while nurturing gratitude instead—but genuine happiness is found not in stuff but in intangible things like self-improvement and experience and service, which reminds us that we’re not the only people with problems.

Episode 0020 | Life After Crowdfunding: Indiegogo InDemand

You might find this episode’s topic a bit interesting: “Life After Crowdfunding: IndieGoGo InDemand – What Do I Do After I’ve Had a Successful Campaign on Kickstarter?” An interesting question! Your journey has just begun. Don’t worry, though—we’ll get it all covered in this episode…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Indiegogo InDemand is an excellent platform for gleaning additional funds for your project while it’s awaiting fulfillment (between Kickstarter phase and e-commerce phase), while leveraging the relatively-high “organic” traffic to Indiegogo’s website.

2. It’s best to prepare your Indiegogo InDemand page to debut immediately when your Kickstarter campaign ends, and to redirect traffic from your Kickstarter page through a “Spotlight” button to your Indiegogo page, so that you don’t needlessly lose either momentum or pledges.

3. It helps to market your Kickstarter campaign through short URLs with adjustable forwarding that can be updated anytime your project transitions from one platform to another.

4. While campaigning on Indiegogo, you should use “secret perks,” negotiate Indiegogo newsletter appearances, and possibly leverage your success to obtain additional funds from angel investors and/or venture capitalists, including on “Shark Tank,” which can also be good for publicity.

5. You can end your Indiegogo InDemand campaign anytime (and even resume it anytime) until your Kickstarter project is fulfilled, but you shouldn’t expect your InDemand campaign to raise more than a fraction of what your Kickstarter campaign raised.

Episode 0019 | Profiting from the Kickstarter Algorithm

In this episode, we are going to show you how you can capitalize on Kickstarter’s more powerful tool—perhaps their most powerful tool—the Kickstarter algorithm…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Pre-launch marketing (including mobilizing one’s personal contacts) can greatly boost a project’s popularity rankings on its launch day.

2. Kickstarter’s Trending (or Popular) page ranks campaigns primarily on recent backers-per-day, but also on other factors like conversion rates, video embeds, and video plays, but not on funds raised.

3. Kickstarter’s Magic algorithm is its default way to sort projects; it seemingly depends upon many complicated factors, and is highly volatile.

4. Kickstarter’s Projects We Love include campaigns that have found favor with one of Kickstarter’s many employees, and this subjective status can sometimes attract tens-of-thousands of dollars in additional pledges.

5. Higher rankings increase platform visibility, which draws more “organic” traffic, which synergizes with traffic from marketing to magnify pledges.

6. Facebook ads are easier to optimize and/or scale than Google ads.

7. Most crowdfunding backers are not first-timers but have backed other projects previously.

Episode 0018 | Platform: Kickstarter versus Indiegogo

In this episode, we’re finally going to answer the age-old question that we probably get asked just as much as anything and, until this point, there’s never been a direct, straightforward answer to. The question: “Which platform should I choose for launching my campaign—Indiegogo or Kickstarter?” The answer might surprise you…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Evaluate your project’s suitability for rewards-based crowdfunding before choosing a platform, which is currently either Kickstarter or Indiegogo.

2. Indiegogo will both treat creators better and support creators actively, whereas Kickstarter will demand higher standards that please backers and earn their trust.

3. Identical projects will always raise money significantly better on Kickstarter than on Indiegogo, as hard data proves, enough that some failing campaigns will enjoy success merely by transitioning platforms from Indiegogo to Kickstarter.

4. Unless comparative statistics change dramatically, always campaign on Kickstarter if possible, and Indiegogo only as a backup option.

5. If your campaign succeeds on Kickstarter, then consider transitioning afterward to Indiegogo InDemand to raise additional pledges until fulfillment.

Episode 0017 | Achieving Goals like Multimillionaires

In this episode, we are going to talk about goal-setting. Zach has spent a lot of time reading about goals, and so has Thomas; in fact, Thomas focused some of his Master’s Degree studies on goal-setting. But, today, we aren’t going to talk about what the academics, PhDs, or pundits say; instead, we are going to show you how Zach and Thomas actually set and achieve goals for their own personal and business lives to reach the success that they’ve had, and how you can do it, too.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. We should set goals not only on special occasions but regularly, and not merely for business but for all aspects of our lives.

2. We can’t control everything, but we should accept responsibility for what’s within our stewardship, set goals to improve it as best as we can, and exercise faith in our ability to do so.

3. Goals should be lofty but achievable, “stretching” us without overwhelming us, and can be divided into a series of smaller objectives.

4. Goals should not be abstract thoughts but concrete statements in physical form that involve doing something measurable for specific people for specific reasons by a specific deadline.

5. We achieve our goals better whenever we render ourselves accountable not only to ourselves but also to others for achieving them, especially as we review/report our progress regularly (perhaps as part of a morning routine) with those to whom we are accountable.

6. We should set goals according to timeless universal principles, but also customized to our own individual personalities.

7. We shouldn’t demand immediate perfection at both setting and achieving our goals, but should persistently both reevaluate and improve our habits over time.

Episode 0016 | Crowdfunding Promotion: Paid Media (Ads)

In this episode, we’re going to walk you through the single-most-effective way to consistently raise money and even extrapolate how much money you’re going to raise. This approach has raised more money than all of our other methods and that’s why we saved this one for last. Let’s get started!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Crowdfunding advertising, compared with other forms of marketing, is unusually steady in raising pledges, and typically raises higher pledge totals than any other method.

2. Start advertising on Facebook through desktop news-feed ads (optimized for clicks but billed for impressions) and then possibly expand to other social-media platforms.

3. In choosing audiences to test, consider lookalike audiences of people who have backed similar crowdfunding campaigns, which tend to perform best.

4. For each audience targeted, try to maximize click-through rates by testing a variety of different image-and-text combinations (excluding images that look too obviously like ads while possibly including creator images) that will both attract viewers’ attention and arouse their curiosity, not to sell your project on their own but to draw traffic to your campaign page.

5. Start advertising by testing your most highly-targeted audiences to determine their profitability, then expand your ads targeting as long as it remains profitable, and continue running ads (while slowly scaling-up spending on them) as long as they remain profitable, realizing that their ROI will diminish over time on Facebook.

6. Use custom links plus analytics (like CTRs and EPVs) to calculate profitability accurately, rather than speculating, while considering the fact that ads typically yield more pledges than those that are directly trackable to them.

7. It can help to outsource your campaign marketing to a crowdfunding agency, since agencies typically enjoy skilled labor plus a variety of backer lookalike audiences—but you should verify their claims to have worked on various campaigns, and hire only one agency at a time to avoid them hurting each other’s success.

Episode 0015 | Crowdfunding Promotion: Earned Media (PR)

In this episode, we’ve got a very special guest for you. She’s directly responsible for raising millions of dollars for thousands of campaigns leveraging the power of earned media and the press!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Public relations is best started as soon as possible in order to allow as much time as possible to cultivate vital relationships, but it’s never too late for PR to accomplish some good.

2. It’s helpful (but not essential) to send prototypes or samples to reviewers, especially when such product reviews are arranged in advance during a campaign’s pre-launch phase.

3. Crowdfunding PR (unlike traditional PR) should focus more on short-term fundraising than on long-term positive exposure, which may mean targeting sources that enjoy less prominence but better conversion rates, such as product directories.

4. Crowdfunding PR should involve compiling a list of hundreds of news outlets that serve one’s target market, identifying only one reporter (at a time) to contact at each outlet, pitching to those reporters via e-mail (ideally on Friday mornings but neither Mondays nor holidays), and finally following-up persistently with any reporters who haven’t yet responded.

5. Each such pitch to a newscaster should include a title that will easily stand out among hundreds of others, present content that is brief, “snappy,” entertaining, informative, and highly-customized toward the writing style of each news source, along with the interests of its audience, and also include a link to whichever campaign page is being promoted.

6. It’s easier for popular well-funded campaigns to get featured, especially those with newsworthy elements—and getting featured in one news source (whether big or small) renders it easier to get featured in additional news sources.

7. Public relations is both hectic and “hit-or-miss,” and sometimes rather slow to yield results, but it can potentially raise tens-of-thousands of dollars for the right campaigns.

Episode 0014 | Crowdfunding Promotion: Cross-Promotions

In this episode, we’re going to talk about the single-most-effective way to generate the best possible conversions for your invention. After testing HUNDREDS of other methods and marketing mediums, this one simple strategy trumps all the rest—and it’s not even close just how well this strategy converts as compared to ANY other method we’ve tested. To do so, we’re bringing on another special guest, the jack-of-all-trades get-’er-done closer himself, Mr. Colton Bybee, the Director of Outreach at Funded Today.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. It’s important to update backers regularly—usually about twice weekly, depending upon exactly how communicative they want you to be, which they’ll generally tell you—at the time-of-day that’s best for wherever most of them live.

2. It’s helpful to end each backer update by introducing no more than five cross-promotions (which may also be called “cross-collaborations” or “CCs”) arranged with other campaigns, even if a few backers complain about it.

3. Cross-promotions should never feature competitors’ projects, but they fare best when featuring complimentary projects, although they still do well featuring unrelated campaigns, especially campaigns that have attracted high percentages of repeat backers.

4. Not all backers will read cross-promotions, nor click on them, but those who respond to them will normally convert at unusually-high rates of up to 20% or so, which is far more than the average rate of about 1%-3% (depending upon average pledge size)—and, conversely, if cross-promotion traffic doesn’t convert, then it’s almost guaranteed that no other traffic will convert, either.

5. Some popular campaigns have raised over $50,000 directly from cross-promotions alone—and, just like with other forms of crowdfunding marketing, increased pledges from cross-promotions generally encourage increased pledges from all other sources.

Episode 0013 | Crowdfunding Promotion: Leads & Affiliates

In this episode, we’re going to get a little bit deeper into pre-launch. There’s no one in the entire rewards-based crowdfunding space who has generated more e-mailing addresses and more interest for new inventions and businesses than our very own Director of Lead-Generation & Affiliate Marketing at Funded Today, Mr. Tevin Christopher.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. College isn’t essential to either learn or prosper.

2. Crowdfunding success isn’t about either chance or “magic,” but about adhering to fundamental business principles, including in pre-launch phase—and it’s ideal to be first to enter a market, but only if you come sufficiently prepared.

3. Kickstarter campaigns should launch with a thorough prototype section, with funding goals that are not only high enough to seem legitimate but also low enough to avoid daunting people, and with support from Google Analytics to effectively analyze marketing data.

4. It helps to engage in pre-launch marketing among both personal contacts and generated leads (obtained through social-media ads), who can not only provide useful feedback to creators but also help creators to reach their respective funding goals as quickly as possible, which is a great advantage.

5. Leads may be e-mailed 24 hours before a campaign launches to prepare them, during launch to mobilize them to pledge, 24 hours after launch to report progress, weekly thereafter, daily again during a campaign’s final 3 days, and then weekly or monthly afterward as long as those leads continue to yield revenue.

6. Affiliates include backers who get paid a small cut for bringing pledges to campaigns, whether from themselves or from others, which contribute to a campaign’s success.

7. Influencers can also help (although not usually as significantly), especially those with sizable audiences that sufficiently fit one’s product—and they are best arranged in advance so that they enjoy ample time to receive a product and review it.

Episode 0012 | Leveraging the Pareto Principle (80/20)

In this episode, we’re going to talk about a paradox. Is it really better to be lazy than hard-working? Is it actually possible to get 16 times better results in your personal life and your business, doing less work than you are doing now? I think we’ve got an answer for you today that’s going to expand your mind and inspire you to test this tried-and-true principle. So, let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. The Pareto Principle is a natural law that 20% causes produce 80% of effects, which means that some efforts are 16× as productive as other efforts.

2. The Pareto Principle implies that you should focus most of your attention on what matters most, which will enable you to increase both your efficiency and your effectiveness, thereby achieving more good (and also earning more money) within less time, rather than working exceptionally hard for relatively meager results.

3. You should take time off from work regularly, which will increase your productivity on-the-job.

4. You should engage in regular self-evaluation to reconsider what your goals should be, along with what activities will achieve those goals, and how you’re spending your time, and then adjust your schedule accordingly—and, by working smarter, you won’t need to work as hard.

5. Most business activity is minutiae, which can be delegated to hired specialists, who should be led/managed but not micromanaged, which allows entrepreneurs more time to focus on what matters most.

Episode 0011 | The Market Matters Most in Business

In this episode, we’ve got another good one for you. We spent quite a few episodes walking you step-by-step through what you need to do to succeed with your new business venture. But did you know there’s one thing that’s more important than all of that? And today, we’re going to talk about it. I think, by the time you are done listening to this episode, you are going to have a complete mindset shift. So let’s get started…

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Build a good team and offer a good product/service, but accept that you still won’t succeed unless you fit the market, and that its size will determine the limits of your prosperity.

2. Your marketing will succeed better as you focus on channeling existing desires toward what you offer, rather than on creating new desires for what you offer.

3. If you work against the market, then you might labor hard for meager rewards but, if you work with the market, then prosperity will come naturally or even effortlessly.

4. You may prosper best by asserting a leading role within a sizable fast-growing market in which competition remains minimal.

5. Reject complacency but instead monitor markets (including via SWOT analysis) constantly as they constantly change.

Episode 0010 | “The Crowd Whisperer” Evaluates Projects

In this episode, we’re busting out our secret weapon. There’s even a bit of some “water cooler talk” going on at Funded Today, that this guy is “THE Crowd Whisperer.” If there’s anyone in the entire crowdfunding universe who has an eye for a great product and how to create one yourself, it’s this man, our very own Director of Client Specialists at Funded Today, Mr. Curtis Child.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Learn as much as possible from your competitors’ campaigns about what helped render their products and/or presentations successful.

2. Before you ever launch a campaign, back some campaigns, both to familiarize yourself with the crowdfunding process and to establish yourself as part of the crowdfunding community.

3. Crowdfunding backers constitute a community with certain commonalities, and you can expect most of your project’s backers to be repeat not new.

4. The crowdfunding community seems to notice campaigns more readily when they use attractive uncluttered thumbnail images created from high-quality soft photographs of trendily-colored products on white backgrounds.

5. Crowdfunding campaigns raise funds better anytime they’re the first to offer the crowdfunding community a desirable innovation to a ubiquitous product, rather than marginally improving upon a previous project, although the latter can also enjoy success.

6. Rather than marginally improving upon someone else’s original idea, campaigners might succeed better by applying an already-successful innovation to an entirely-different product.

7. Many crowdfunding campaigners expect to raise $1,000,000 but don’t—but short-term success does not correlate with long-term success.

Episode 0009 | Rising from Poverty to Wealth

In this episode, we’re switching gears a bit. We want to talk about how studying poverty can teach us principles that ultimately lead to wealth.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. We should cease blaming others for our choices and their consequences, including financially, and instead accept personal responsibility/accountability for our own future.

2. We should exercise faith in our capacity to merit a better future, including financially, amidst the abundant opportunities that surround us.

3. We should regularly assess our own personal “capital”—not only the financial sort but also ALL other sorts—to determine which types we’re currently lacking, and perpetually strive to improve ourselves in whatever ways we remain deficient.

4. We should nurture the right mentality through regular positive self-talk, along with visualizing the results that we seek, while remembering that thought without action accomplishes nothing.

5. We should associate regularly with the sort of people whom we want to become so that we can learn to emulate their success.

6. We should learn from others how to qualify for what we want, rather than remaining endlessly dependent upon others to give us things that we never earned, and we should also nurture gratitude for everything that we receive.

7. We should expect 20% of our efforts to yield 80% of our results, according to the Pareto Principle, and learn to prioritize our efforts accordingly.

Episode 0008 | Crowdfunding Presentation: Video Production

In this episode, for one final time, we’re rounding out our presentation series and focusing on your crowdfunding video. Ever wondered how to make the perfect video that also converts? Want to know the best ways to use video to tell the story of your product to build your own raving fans? Boy, do we have a good one for you today, then!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. The most important part of campaign videography is good scriptwriting, which can start when you honestly compose your true story, practice sharing your story with others, and obtain as much honest feedback about your story as possible in order to perfect it—and, by perfecting it before filming it, you can avoid expensive revisions.

2. The purpose of a campaign video is to initially hook viewers, then tell them an engaging true story (without distractions) within 1-2 minutes that elicits emotion through conflicts that are ultimately resolved by the product being offered, also introduce the creator if possible, and finally present a strong call-to-action that motivates viewers to pledge.

3. Effective presentation (especially through campaign videography) is even more important than effective promotion, because bringing traffic to a campaign page is pointless if that traffic doesn’t convert readily into pledgers.

Episode 0007 | Crowdfunding Presentation: Page Design

In this episode, we’re taking a deeper dive into presentation. Ever wondered how to design the perfect page? Want to know the best way to structure your rewards for your campaign? Want to know the perfect number of rewards you should offer? If so, this master class is for you!

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. It can help to imitate successful campaign presentations, but don’t presume that the most-funded campaigns must also have the most effective pitches, because such campaign media may be redesigned mid-campaign (and not always wisely), and also because total funds raised depends upon more factors than presentation alone.

2. Discussing your project with real people long before you launch your campaign can help you to develop a sense of how to most effectively pitch your product to potential backers.

3. Your campaign page’s sales pitch should load quickly to avoid losing viewers, start powerfully to persuade viewers that it’ll be worth their time to continue reading and/or skimming further, and then continue in a manner that’s easy for viewers (including non-native English speakers) to both navigate and understand, spurning needless complexity and/or marketing hype to embrace both short sentences and plain language.

4. You should customize your pitch to likely backers through persuasive copywriting (which is more vital than good visuals) that focuses primarily upon the benefits that you’re offering viewers, and secondarily upon other factors like costs and/or your team.

5. As a startup, focus on basics like both traffic and conversions, and on presenting your team as likable and competent and trustworthy, but don’t worry about your company’s branding until it’s much further developed.

6. Episode 0006 | The 7 P’s for Crowdfunding Success

In this episode, we are going to go over “The 7 P’s for Crowdfunding Success.” These 7 P’s are Product, Platform, Presentation, Promotion, Price, Probability, and People. Find out why these 7 P’s are critical to having a successful campaign launch.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Your most vital factor in your crowdfunding campaign’s success (or failure) is always your product or service, so strive to offer a worthy one.

2. Even a worthy product/service won’t sell if it’s too costly, it’s better for pricing to err on the high side (and correct downward) than on the low side (and correct upward), and it’s helpful to show people that they need to pledge NOW in order to avoid paying more.

3. Although your product/service is vital, YOU serve as a supporting factor, as backers need to feel that you are sufficiently likable, passionate, competent, et cetera, that they can trust you to fulfill your promises to them.

4. Some projects are ill-suited for rewards-based crowdfunding, while the rest will raise funds more easily on Kickstarter than on Indiegogo.

5. Effective presentation can multiply success, and your media (video and page) is more important than your marketing.

6. Promotion involves reaching out to the best audiences while effectively persuading them to come view your presentation, and crowdfunding marketing techniques may include advertisements, cross-promotions, affiliate marketing, and/or public relations.

7. Potential backers are likelier to pledge when they feel confident that your campaign will succeed, which is why success breeds success in crowdfunding.

Episode 0005 | The Crowdfunding Success Matrix

In this episode, you might feel like you’re back in business school! We’re going to talk about a matrix—“The Crowdfunding Success Matrix.” What do black holes, shooting stars, and supernovas have to do with crowdfunding?

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Earnings-per-visitor (EPV) is a more useful metric than conversion rates, including in comparing the utility of differently-priced products/services.

2. Poor sales may indicate a problem with either low conversion rates (due to a product/service and/or its presentation) or low click-through rates (due to its marketing), and it’s important to correctly identify the extent to which each factor needs to be remedied.

3. Entrepreneurs should address low conversions before low traffic or else their balance sheet may needlessly resemble a figurative “black hole,” wasting money to draw traffic that doesn’t convert well enough.

4. Good products/services sell even better through good marketing, and crowdfunding campaigns that involve both of these may be likened to “supernovas.”

Episode 0004 | Failure, Pivoting, and Success

This episode goes deep. Real deep. We’re going to get real. We’re going to talk about emotions and feelings. What do I do when my campaign fails? And, most importantly: your crowdfunding campaign might fail, and that’s okay.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. You can’t normally know for certain whether an idea will succeed or fail until you test it.

2. Although entrepreneurs need to have both passion and faith, they should also remain humble enough to accept correction, as excessive and/or misplaced confidence can impede their ability to persistently learn-and-improve toward success.

3. Entrepreneurs should not commit themselves to their ideas as much as to success, which may involve altering their ideas or even abandoning those ideas completely to effectively serve the ever-changing marketplace.

Episode 0003 | Friends, Family, and “Fools” (FFF)

This episode presents how to validate your new crowdfunding idea before you ever spend a single dollar. This is one of the most important pre-launch strategies you MUST do if you’re going to have a successful crowdfunding campaign.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Don’t wait until your crowdfunding campaigns launches before you try to determine if anyone actually wants to buy your product/service; instead, overcome doubt and/or fear to test the market.

2. Your family, friends, and other personal contacts can not only provide “safe” feedback about your ideas, but also pledge to enhance your campaign’s first-day success.

3. “An entrepreneur should be committed to success, and not to their idea,” so never fear to fail and learn and improve until you achieve success.

Honest positive poignant storytelling adds value to your crowdfunded product/service.

4. Episode 0001 | Funded Today’s Origin Story

This episode presents how Funded Today started, how its co-founders Zach Smith & Thomas Alvord have now helped to raise over $200,000,000 and counting in just the last four years, and some takeaways for how you can apply the lessons they learned to your own business ventures.

----------------------------------------------------------------

⭐ During this episode, we detail these takeaways:

1. Persistent experimentation-and-learning (despite failure) is a key to entrepreneurial success.

2. It’s good to try to offer customers what you can do better than anyone else (or few others).

3. If you provide a sufficiently-good service, then your clients will help market it for free; relatedly, you can judge that you have a good business idea when you don’t need to pay to market it.

4. Don’t market blindly (if possible) but collect data, analyze it, and base your decisions upon it.

5. Spend as much money as possible as long as it remains profitable to do so.

6. Start lean while you focus on providing a good product/service before bothering with peripheral things like business cards.

7. Growth always requires time, so don’t expect to become a massive company “overnight.”
