Anchoring for 50 Knots

Dragging anchor is no fun. At best, you end up on deck in less than ideal conditions -- often the middle of the night and/or a squall. At worst, there's boat damage and injury to people.

By always anchoring as if we know it'll blow 50, we're ready for the times it does. Here, Carolyn Shearlock explains their technique.

Links:

Mantus Anchor: https://amzn.to/2Of33BX

Mantus Chain Hook for 1/4" chain: https://amzn.to/2vmcM2l

Sena Bluetooth headsets ("My Team Talks"): https://amzn.to/2AHiuAV

Sponsor: GoSun.co Inventors of the world's fastest most compact solar cookers for all your ship to shore culinary adventures. First Time Voyagers’ Fears

Setting off on your first ocean passage can be daunting. For the first timer it is hard to dismiss the sea stories you read online or in sailing magazines - storms, dismastings, all the things that could possibly go wrong when you are far from land. To help you put these fears into a proper perspective, Lin Pardey interviewed 11 voyagers who had just crossed the South Pacific Oceans to learn what worried them most, and what they actually found “out there”.

Links:

Capable Cruiser: https://amzn.to/2uoFdfKhttps://amzn.to/2JspjoZ

Storm Tactics: https://amzn.to/2Lj5KBl

Rainman Watermakers: https://www.seataskgroup.com/

Monitor Windvane: https://www.scanmarinternational.com/windvane-selfsteering

Sponsor: Shambala Sailing Adventures, offering customized learning charters in Exumas, Bahamas. Weird Wiring Colors

If you buy a used boat, someday you’re sure to discover something that the prior owner did that leaves you scratching your head.

For Carolyn Shearlock, it was wiring colors. What Does Cruising Cost?

Wondering if you could really afford to cruise? Most people assume that you have to be wealthy to cruise. Not so — but it does take a certain amount of money, or a willingness to give up some things that you may now take for granted.

Everyone has to come up with their own budget and make their own decision as to what they have to have.

In this episode, Carolyn Shearlock discusses some of the hidden costs and tradeoffs that are glossed over in many discussions of what it costs to cruise. With ten years' experience, she's known everyone from bare bones low-cost specialists to those living the high life.

Music: “Slow Down” by Yvette Craig
