Project Boat as Your First Boat

If you’re in the market for a boat, sooner or later you’ll be intrigued by some really low-priced boat you see. Hmm, you think, with the money I save on the purchase, I can turn it into exactly what I want.

The reality is that project boats can give you exactly the boat you want, but are generally not a good deal financially and most times the work takes considerably longer than expected. Many never end up in the water.

Carolyn Shearlock has seen many people buy project boats over the years. If you've never owned a boat before, she has some extra words of caution.

Sponsor: SeaTech Systems, offering cruiser-tested solutions for weather and communications. What Does Cruising Cost?

Wondering if you could really afford to cruise? Most people assume that you have to be wealthy to cruise. Improving Boat Ventilation

Living on your boat in summer — tropical or otherwise — can be hot. Really, really hot. Many boaters cope by staying in marinas and install air conditioning.

But what about those of us who prefer to anchor out? Flatten the Learning Curve

You finally did it. Bought a boat. You're excited about it, but nothing is easy. Everything you do -- from where to put the dishes, how to start the engine, raising the sails, going through locks and bridges, and even just how the toilet works -- is new.

It's exhausting.

Carolyn Shearlock has some words of advice from ten years of cruising and buying two boats where every day was a learning experience.

Music: "Slow Down" by Yvette Craig

More Learning Boat Systems

It's easy to be overwhelmed by all the systems on a new-to-you boat and only learn how something works when you need to use it or it breaks. That can be pretty stressful, though, feeling that you can't do anything without an owner's manual in your hand.

Carolyn Shearlock presents an alternative way to get to know your new boat inside and out, so you'll feel confident and stay sane.

Sponsor: Storing Food without Refrigeration ebook

Coupon code: PODCAST - $1 off

Music: "Slow Down" by Yvette Craig

Why DIY Boat Work

There's always something that needs to be done on a boat: maintenance, repair or an upgrade.

Many cruisers start out hiring professionals for this work, then slowly start doing more and more of it themselves. Bahamas vs. Sea of Cortez
