Episode 26- Travis Martin, Chapter One Foundation, and the "Hope Dealer."
Episode 26- The Chapter One Foundation Join Founder, Travis Martin, as we discuss his last days in the fire service and how he turned his darkness and despair into a new creation as a “hope dealer. Travis was a career fireman in Florida for many years until the demons of his past and the stressors of the job culminated in a suicide attempt and losing everything. His story of inspriation is a message of hope for all. Below is an excerpt form his biography. In my own life, I continue to battle the PTS beast. In September of 2017 I had to spend a month at the IAFF center of excellence in Upper Marlboro, MD. The peers I met are now friends for life. I grew a lot from that experience. In fact, I discovered my ability and gift for art. When I returned home, I enrolled in Full Sail University for Computer Animation. Month in and I am crushing it. But daily I live this recovery. It’s bad lows sometimes lasting days not weeks any more. My kids, family, and friends are still very unsure of my recovery but I do my best to do the things I need to do to keep me healthy.  I put all my heart and passion into Chapter 1 and my college classes. I hope to work as a graphic designer/animator in less than three years. I also hope to have a Chapter 1 Foundation in every major city by 2025. Episode 23- Dennis Cole and The Uniformed Services Peer Council- Join Dennis and I as we discuss his story and what motivated him to start this peer council designed to help providers with issues that up until recent days have had little support.   Dennis Cole is the President and founder of the Uniformed Services Peer Council (USPC), a nonprofit agency in Connecticut that provides direct assistance to first responders by networking effective help and ensuring proper access to resources.  Almost four years ago, he survived his second and nearly complete brush with suicidality, alcohol abuse, and the effects of trauma.  During the recovery process, he encountered many areas that were severely lacking in our system of help and several gaps that needed to be addressed.  With the help of friends and others who had similar experiences, the organization was formed.  Networking effective and reputable people to assist and guide others through the process of wellness is paramount to improving another’s success and is a mainstay of his work.  USPC has a focus of “peers helping peers” and assisting each other through the journey and pairing them with professional help.   Their network has grown to over 20 providers who have all been screened to meet the highest criteria for professional effectiveness including specialties in trauma work, professional counseling, addiction and substance abuse, mind-body connection, and through to primary care and sleep    Uniformedhelp.org Facebook, Twitter, Instagram- @uspc Uniformedhelp.org Facebook, Twitter, Instagram- @uspc

Ep019: Katrina King - Recovered Purpose and Chasing the Dragon
In 2011, while Katrina was incarcerated pending sentencing for prescription fraud, possession, distribution and other charges related to her addiction, Katrina's 20-year-old daughter began heavily abiding prescription pills. Within months, her beautiful and naive little girl was completely addicted and out of control. Katrina felt panicked and powerless as she was told that the child who was always terrified of needles, was now injecting herself with death regularly. Ep014: Andrew Shannon - The Code Green Campaign
Join Andrew Shannon, Public Information Officer, of this amazing organization as we speak about the hard topics of responder suicide, prevention, and education. The Code Green Campaign was started in March of 2014 after a group of EMS professionals noticed the alarming rate of suicide in EMS. The Code Green Campaign is a first responder oriented mental health advocacy and education organization. Also known as Code Green, they serve all types of first responders, including firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, police, corrections, air medical, and search & rescue. The name comes from the color for mental health awareness (green) and "code alerts" that EMS uses to designate an emergency patient. For example, if someone is having a stroke or heart attack that needs rapid intervention, first responders will tell the hospital the patient is having a "code stroke" or a "code STEMI." The idea is that Code Green is calling a code alert on the mental health of first responders. The Fire Asylum is a training crucible that burns heroes to ash and reshapes them into people for whom firefighting is not a job, but a calling. Marty left police work in 2000 but continued to volunteer as a fire fighter. Marty worked in the field of high-end private security, until 2010 when he was diagnosed with cancer and placed into hospice. After several surgeries and extended treatments, Marty beat cancer like a rented mule. Today Marty runs his training company called, The Fire Asylum. We are honored to have him come on the show and share his experience with his own internal fire and how he overcame it. He now has turned his greatest liability into an asset to help the masses. Ep002: Don Prince - The 11th Hour Trauma Retreat, A Jump-Start Toward Healing
For firefighters and first responders, maintaining optimum mental wellness is a critical part of remaining active and effective on the job as well as at home. Constant exposure to trauma, life-threatening situations, and the physical strain of working long hours on little to no sleep can negatively impact overall mental health, increasing the vulnerability and risk of substance abuse and addiction among firefighters and first responders. My guest for this session knows this risk all too well. Don Prince served for sixteen years as a firefighter and officer for the Brookhaven fire department on eastern Long Island and progressed to the rank of Chief before moving to South Florida. Don served for a short time at the World Trade center site in the aftermath of 9/11 and continues to assist other responders in getting the help they may need with addiction, PTSD and other job-related issues. As a Certified Recovery Coach and Peer Support Specialist, Don has worked with and continues to work with such agencies as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, FDNY, NYPD and other public safety agencies both large and small. Don is a consultant and Lecturer for the Sweeney Alliance, an organization that promotes education and awareness to first responders about grief and loss, addiction resources, and other job-related stress. Don is also the co-founder of the The 11th Hour Trauma Retreat: http://11thhourretreat.org You are not alone.
