As a potential watershed meeting with North Korea looms large, the Mainstream Media has once again missed the mark by misrepresenting the Iran "Political Commitment(s)" as a "treaty" and by misreporting the fallout from the collapse of this non-deal as yet another grievous threat heaped on an unwitting populace by an Orwellian madman Hell-bent on Hitlerian...seriously, to our, um, "peers" in the Mainstream Media? Enough already with the Hitler comparisons. That is an overt slap in the face to anyone with family who experienced the Holocaust, an issue that ought not be political sport for any side. Again, is not liking the POTUS justification for anything done in opposition to the same? On this episode John and Nate continue answering the questions proposed by a listener and friend from NZ. The major theme of the questions answered have to do with collective responsibility and why this isn't as apparent in the United States today. This collective responsibility should be on the shoulders of all ideology, political affiliation and religion, but our friend specifically calls out Christian believers who seem to struggle with collective responsibility. This is apparent because the right is more caught up with who gets to come to this country (immigration), how, and the amount of appropriations to social programs. So what gives? John leaves us with a well articulated thought about Christianity and collective responsibility towards the end of the episode. In fact he co-founded it as a strategic US Branch of SCL (Strategic Communication Laboratories) with funding from right-wing hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer. Cambridge Analytica was designed to create "behavioral changes" in foreign countries. This episode is a discussion about the implications of data received by Cambridge Analytica. Roughly 50-87 million profiles were harvested and then used to swing cultural perspectives in the US during the 2016 election. Nate makes the argument that political campaigns should be using social media, but unethically procuring data from millions of people without their explicit consent is problematic to say the least. Sarah's background is in digital marketing. She elucidates upon some of the practices of how digital marketing companies target you based many different metrics. So where does this lead us next?
Welcome back to the ModState Podcast. This is the 110 episode after a brief hiatus from John and Nate. It is nice to come back on a mid-week episode to talk about the important topics of the past week. First, it sounds like the Austin bomber killed himself with his own bomb-device. Good riddance. Secondly, John and Nate discuss the hypocrisy and non-issue of the Stormy Daniels case with Donald Trump. What do we (as a US population) actually care about regarding this case? Is it the right-wing hypocrisy as they try to jump through hoops explaining how they are okay with Donald Trump's actions? All this while they hold the necessity for exceptional morality on a pedestal? Or is the main-stream media trying to make a bigger issue out of this while giving a pass on someone like Hillary Clinton calling inner city African American's "super-predators?" Does the what-about-ism have merit here? Lastly, Facebook finds themselves in hot water as it is discovered that a data company "Cambridge Analytica" data mined 50 million FB users information without their consent. Worse FB knew about this and did nothing. What does this mean for the future of social media in terms of what we (as a population and consumer base) except from these tech giants?
With another shakeup at the State Department, Rex Tillerson will be replaced by hawkish CIA director Mike Pompeo. Donald Trump has continued to communicate that Mike Pompeo shares his values and understands him. This may be an important move with potential talks with North Korea BUT this beg the question. Should we be enacting diplomacy with strength and fear or cooperation and "love". The Foreign Service is going through growing pains during the Trump administration and funding is decreasing to the State Department whilst an increase in funding is being felt at the Department of Defense. How do we best gain the cooperation of our allies? How do we manage the relationships we have fostered over the years, that stand the test of time through presidential tenures? It is a new week and the prevailing thoughts in host Nate Wellein's head is this slippery line of nationalism and patriotism. What does patriotism look like to you? What is the definition and what does it entail as a citizen? To often today our culture quarantines those who do not believe exactly like we do to the far outskirts of their ideology. 2nd amendment supporter? Nazi, anarchist, and complicit in the murder of innocent children. Raise the minimum wage? Communist, lib-tard, snow-flake and Orwellian supporter of an eventual 1984 state. On this 101st episode John and Nate explore the 2nd a 4th amendment. It is important to add a disclaimer to this episode. Neither John or Nate are conspiratorial, and this episode is by no means tin-foil hat. However, Nate lays out an important position regarding 4th amendment infringements that are insidiously happening, as we speak, with little issue from the same individuals who hold the constitution so dear. This isn't an argument about which amendment is more important but what a world will look like in an "Orwellian" state that 2nd amendment purists claim will happen if their, "guns are taken away." With the repeal of the Propaganda Act that allows for the US government to broadcast propaganda, designed for foreign nations, to be disseminated on US soil coupled with the deconstruction of net neutrality we are far closer to an "Orwellian" state where guns may be meaningless. What will the breaking point be, and what do we need and not need to do to move forward? Questioning someones patriotism, love and loyalty to this country or projecting your moral superiority never moved a conversation to deeper philosophical and ideological exploration. More often than not it backs people into corners making them more defensive. This must stop and discussion should be re-invented. Please tune in and see what John and Nate have to say, and as always thank you for being part of the first 100 episodes!

ModState Podcast Episode 65-Time to Change Attitudes Towards the Tax Bill
Welcome back to the 65th episode of the ModState Podcast. Is it time to change our attitudes towards the tax bill? This bill is most likely to advance forward and become law. Although it will take a while for the effects of the bill to be felt by all it will be the law of the land. There are many nuances of the bill that are problematic but will this bill, in theory, work to create a better standard of living for the average American? Or will this bill be a win for the rich and corporations allowing them to stock-pile buckets of cash for a rainy day? There is a lot of "good-faith" that happens every day. If corporations follow through and invest in the average American will this change the narrative and distaste for this bill overall? Tune in for John and Nate's thoughts. ModState Podcast Episode 63-Net Neutrality Part II and Marco Rubio
Welcome back to the 63rd Episode of the ModState Podcast. Yesterday the fate of the Internet is on it's way from having protections under Title II making its way back to protection under Title I. Now why does this matter and why talk about it again? There are many arguments to be made that under Title I internet services providers will be able to provide money to investments for broadband infrastructure keeping up with the consumers need for data and speed. The second argument is that although investment is necessary at what cost are we willing to forgo the freedom that we have on the internet for it to go back into the hands of only several incredibly powerful ISPs? The questions should start racing through your mind. Lastly, John and Nate explore Marco Rubio's proposal to stall the tax plan while the CHIP program is at stake. Thanks for tuning in!

ModState Podcast Episode 61-Climate Change and Pragmatic Politics
Welcome back to the 61st Episode of the ModState Podcast. Today John and Nate discuss the topic of climate change. The documentary Chasing Coral did a good job of focusing more on the What-is-Happening and less of they why. Objective observation of the devastation of climate change was presented and with it a hopeful shift the narrative of this man-made disaster to what can be done. Does that narrative need to be more of what is happening and less of why it is happening? Can we change the minds of those who are apathetic or don't believe it is man made by talking about it differently? Lastly, John and Nate talk more about the Roy Moore campaign and what we should realistically except from leaders who endorse Roy Moore even though his name has been tarnished by sexual assault accusations. ModState Podcast Episode 59-Tax Money to Sexual Harassment Cases
Welcome back to the 59th Episode of the ModState Podcast. This week news was leaked that several lawmakers on Capitol Hill used tax payer money, from a slush fund, to pay those who they sexual harassed. Your tax money to a tune of 100k (and probably more) was used to finalize suits against John Conyers and Blake Fartenhold. This 1995 law allows for complete confidentiality of both the victim and the accused, but in turn any compensation was paid for by the American tax payer. It is time to hold all those who knew about this accountable and start working towards some real change in Washington DC. Thanks for tuning in and listening.
