#73 - Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places

We're not perfect.

With that in mind, it's no surprise that, sometimes... ok- often... we go looking for love in all the wrong places. Of course, I mean that in the context of our health & fitness... and where, exactly, we seek answers...

We're just doing what we've been taught, really.

This is really quite simple, when you think about it - we have problems, and we're seeking solutions in the "best", most efficient way we know how! That's not so bad... is it? I may be calling it "looking for love in all the wrong places"... but it's really crowdsourcing. There's a problem, though...

Not everything should be crowdsourced.

From important surgeries to unfortunate, unforeseen emergencies... we're not afraid to crowdsource things we can't handle ourselves. Unfortunately, it seems "solutions to our health and fitness problems" are also one of those things. When we have a potential injury or health issue, we look not to a doctor or trained professional... but to the internet. We turn to random strangers we've never met. Not only do we not know these people... we certainly don't know their qualifications relative to our issues. This is, most certainly, a problem... when you consider the potential ramifications of acting on bad advice. Might we get lucky and be ok? Yeah, maybe - but what if we're not so lucky? Maybe we should have a chat about why looking to the faceless masses on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram is not the best plan of action for our nutrition, fitness, health, and injury-fixing needs...

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

What's in this episode:

We talk about how things have been going lately

Some new ventures I’m looking at

And how we’re looking for love in all the wrong places… by asking questions we need answers to in places where Rwe might get the WRONG answers

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

See how much Health IQ can save YOU on life insurance, you healthy person, you :)

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

See how much Health IQ can save YOU on life insurance, you healthy person, you :)

#71 - We're Starting Over... And It's Not The End Of The World

This sucks.

Plain and simple truth is... starting from scratch when you know where you USED to be is super frustrating. So, yes - we're starting over... and it's not the end of the world. It doesn't have to be for you, either.

It's going to be tough.

I won't sugar-coat it, FitFriends... starting over is going to be tough. It doesn't have to defeat you, though! I've got some quick tips to keep you not just surviving, but THRIVING, during this go-'round -

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

What's in this episode:

Snowpocalypse has come to New England!

Why starting over isn't the end of the world

What we're doing to make this a success!

Episode Resources

Podcast #17 - 2017, Goalsetting, and Getting Uncomfortable

America The Fat

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

See how much Health IQ can save YOU on life insurance, you healthy person, you :)

#70 - How To Do The New Year Right

We've been here before.

With the New Year looming we're sitting here doing two things - fondly (or not-so-fondly) looking back on the past year... and planning the next. We know what happens next though - things don't go as planned. If they did... we wouldn't be making "New Year's Resolutions"... would we? So how about this time... we do the new year right?

There's a few things to fix, here...

I'm sorry to say, it's not just the usual "things fall apart" situation that we need to address if we're going to "do the New Year right". We have the potential for a truly amazing year... but only if we really take a good hard look at the usual course of things. So, rather than my usual long, preachy New Year's blog post... I'm simply going to make a few requests (and expand on this in the podcast)...

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

What's in this episode:

We talk cold, the holidays coming to an end, and the New Year!

We talk about what a “new year’s resolution really is”

How we’ve been doin some people wrong

And things to think about as we move into the new year

Episode Resources

Podcast #17 - 2017, Goalsetting, and Getting Uncomfortable

America The Fat

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

See how much Health IQ can save YOU on life insurance, you healthy person, you :)

#69 - The Ripple Effect - Yes, The Gift You Give Matters!

"A pebble in the pond..."

We don't always think of ourselves as particularly "powerful", but maybe we should. Each and every one of us has the power to throw even just a pebble in the pond. The pebble may not make a big splash, but the ripple effect is not to be underestimated...

Yes, the "gift" you give matters!

Even a simple action can have immense consequences and effects. Simply put, it is ALWAYS worth giving your best effort to have a positive impact in the world. Even if you think you're just throwing a pebble in the pond, FitFriends, don't underestimate the power of the ripples you can create.

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

What's in this episode:

The holiday season and getting back on the horse

Recognizing Reviews!

The unexpected revival of a thing

And thoughts about gifts, giving, the ripples we make and the power we really have.

Episode Resources

Podcast Episode #68 - Be Kind, Do Good - The Power Of The Millinocket Marathon

Podcast Episode #16 - Millinocket & The Golden Road

Millinocket Marathon Website

Millinocket Live Podcast Facebook Event

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

See how much Health IQ can save YOU on life insurance, you healthy person, you :)

#68 - Be Kind, Do Good - The Power Of The Millinocket Marathon

Sometimes... an event is... more...

Every so often in the course of human existence... something truly beautiful happens. It's not always obvious and you don't always know it's happening. Sometimes, people can pass right through it and be none the wiser. But those who catch a glimpse... and realize what's going on... know they're witnessing, or perhaps understand that they're a part of... something truly special. That, FitFriends, is what has been happening in the small Northern Maine town of Millinocket...

"Be kind, do good"

When we're little we're taught a lot of very simple rules to live by. Brush your teeth before bed. Don't push, hit, or hurt people. Say please and thank you. So many things, all just like that, which essentially boil down to "be kind, do good". It's simple, core values like this that seem to have taken root in what has fast become a truly impressive, rather transformative weekend each December in sleepy little Millinocket, Maine.

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

What's in this episode:

We chronicle our trip to Millinocket, Maine for the 3rd annual Millinocket Marathon & Half

We catch part of our drive into town and what we’re excited about

We chat with Jen and Trish from the Moose Drop In

Have a live podcast with race director Gary Allen

And recap our experience afterwards

If you were there or you’re thinking about going, you won’t wanna miss this!

Episode Resources

Podcast Episode #16 - Millinocket & The Golden Road

Millinocket Marathon Website

Millinocket Live Podcast Facebook Event

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #67 - Keep It Simple - How To Find The Best Running Shoes

It's just SHOES... why is this so complicated?

You would think buying a pair of running shoes is as easy as finding your size, making sure you like how they look, and paying for them... right? Well, sadly, that has not been my experience. On Episode 67 of the podcast, though... I chat with a man who wants to make it nice and easy to find the shoe that's best for you... and make it easy to buy it, too!

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

Jens Jakob Andersen is a man on a mission.

Jens created RunRepeat.com with a simple mission - make it easy to find your next running shoe. To do this, he's created a pretty solid one-stop-shop for running shoes. On his site you can find boatloads of reviews on shoes, you can find each shoe boiled down to pros and cons given by numerous expert and "normal people" reviews, and you can even buy the shoe via their "deal links". I have to admit... I was pretty impressed not just by the sheer volume of information on RunRepeat... but also by how non-threatening and easy-to-consume it all was.

The man has really done it, FitFriends.

If you're looking for your next running shoe... you really should check it out. He provides all the info you could need, broken down in helpful, easy-to-understand ways and sorted to show you what is, arguably, the best shoes out there. That said, though... there's one important question left to answer that I HOPE you're asking:

How do I know the shoe that's best... for ME?

This is the question I posed to him... and while Jens and I may differ on some points... we can both definitely agree on one. Give a listen to our chat to hear the full discussion, and check below to see what, exactly, is in this episode!

What's in this episode:

Being sick is no fun

Millinocket is finally here!

A chat with Jens Jakob Andersen of RunRepeat.com

Who he is

What RunRepeat.com is

What YOU need to know about buying running shoes

And more

Episode Resources

Podcast Episode #16 - Millinocket & The Golden Road

Millinocket Marathon Website

Millinocket Live Podcast Facebook Event

Jens Jakob Andersen on Facebook

RunRepeat on Facebook

Find RunRepeat.com online!

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #66 - Eyes On The Prize - How To Crush Your First Marathon

So, you wanna run a marathon, huh?

There's a lot of questions to answer when you're getting ready to take on your first marathon or half-marathon. Fortunately, many people have come before you and had the same questions you undoubtedly now are asking. Well, friends - no need to reinvent the wheel here - let's answer some of those questions and get you ready for your next big achievement!

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

Some of you are ready, some of you are not.

I primarily mean that in terms of attitude, but I suppose it also applies in terms of skill and ability. If you're not sure that you're ready to take on your first marathon or half... THAT'S OK! There's probably a lot of pros and cons you're weighing in your efforts to make the decision. I'm hoping that the questions and answers in this episode will help. For those of you who are totally ready to take the plunge, well, you're gonna need some info and some prep, friend. After all, you don't just run into battle in your undies, right? NO! Of course not! You suit up, get battle ready, and charge into the fray with a plan.

So, here we are, in the planning stages.

What you'll hear in this episode is a recording of a q & a session I held at Anytime Fitness Attleboro (the club I coach out of). The people who are attending submitted the questions asked and asked some more during the recording. All of these people are regular Joe's and Jane's just like you. And like you... they're either considering or already committed to running their first full or half marathon.

Yes, they are bravely ready to dive in.

They'll be taking on the Providence Marathon & Half with me on May 6th, 2018... and I couldn't be prouder or more excited for them! They're going to learn a lot about themselves and what they're really capable of both throughout the process and when it's all said and done. So, like them, I encourage you to be brave, get prepared, and take on YOUR next challenge. I hope this episode helps... and if you've got questions I didn't answer in this episode... email them to me!
Not everything is as "legit" as it seems.

The internet is an amazing place. Think about it - anything you want to know... you can find it on the internet! #64 - The Holiday Survival Guide - How To Avoid Cascading Failures

The "holiday season" can be tough.

On any normal day... life is hard enough as it is. Factor in everything that comes with the holidays... and it can be enough to derail anyone. It can be tough to juggle family, food, and travel. The easy option is to give up and stop trying to make nutrition and fitness work. I submit to you: there is a better way. This is my now-yearly pitch... I call it "The Holiday Survival Guide".

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

I get it. Really, I do.

Like I said - life is busy as it is. The holidays crank that up to 11. So much shopping, organizing, cooking, cleaning, and coordinating to do it can make your head spin. Work usually gets more difficult, which interferes with home and personal life. Then there's the holidays themselves and all the travel involved... plus the food is a nightmare. How am I supposed to stick to "the plan" with 82 holiday meals?

Nobody said it was going to be easy.

Do-able doesn't mean simple or easy. It's going to be hard work, just like fitness and nutrition, in general, are hard work. But at the end of the day...

It's worth it.

How great will it feel to make it to January 1st and to know... "I did it. I made it through and didn't screw it all up". There's a certain sense of victory at stake here, not to mention that whole "your health" thing. I've got some thoughts on how you can do this thing. So, give a listen to Episode 64 and find out what's in The Holiday Survival Guide.

What's in this episode:

How life has been for me lately

What’s coming down the pipeline

And how to avoid the cascading failures that tend to come with the holiday season

Including keeping your physical fitness and nutrition in line

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Podcast Archive on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Reviews on "So, THIS Is Fitness..."

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

E-mail - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #63 - How To Live In The Awkward Space Between Places

Waiting doesn't have to be boring.

We've answered the question of "now what?"... but that's not the end. "What's next" might not actually START right away. It could be a training plan that starts in a month. It could be any number of scenarios, really. So the question now becomes... what do I do with myself until then? #62 - Congrats! Now What? How To Deal With The Aftermath.

When it's all done... what do we do?

We spend months and months working towards a big goal race. Even more than that - we spend all year running, training, enjoying the weather and our sport. We cross the finish lines and make great achievements. When it's all said and done, though... now what? When we're left with no more races, and no more good running weather... until SPRING... what do we do? #61 - The True Gift The Ultramarathon Gives To The Worthy

We must keep moving forward.

There are so many contexts in which that statement is relevant. I've been saying it a lot lately in the gym, too - If you're not moving forward, you're going backward. This past weekend I learned, definitively, that despite what I thought... I was not moving forward. Despite running, jogging, walking and physically moving forward for 60 miles over the course of 18 hours... I was not moving forward. And in that... I learned something. It took me a few days to get it... but it did hit me. I learned the true gift the Ultramarathon gives to the worthy.

For the full blog post and show notes visit the blog here.

What's in this episode:

We recap the Ghost Train Rail Trail Race Ultramarathon

Talking about the lead-up

The race day experience itself

And the lessons learned afterward…

Including - where do we go from here?

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #60 - How To Smash Limits And Become The Impossible

The "impossible" is done all the time.

People say a thing is "impossible" for many reasons. Often it's because they simply don't fully understand it, can't fathom it, and thus dismiss it. Little do they know... the "impossible" is accomplished all the time. This weekend, I and many like me will go out to do exactly that - the "impossible".

To finish a marathon is an incredible thing.

For most people out there, a marathon represents a feat of incredible athletic ability. Many people set it as a goal event for themselves, and typically, their friends call them crazy for doing it. Running a marathon is, truly, something remarkable. To train properly for a marathon requires you to work out according to a very serious schedule. You must eat properly to fuel yourself through the runs and workouts. You need to procure the appropriate gear for the task. It takes early mornings, late nights, dedication, and an understanding circle of friends and family. Crossing the finish line of a marathon is a monumental thing. And yet... for some people... this is not enough.

There exists a feat BEYOND the marathon.

Unbeknownst to most people, there are organized endurance running events longer than a marathon. Those events are called Ultramarathons... and they are not for the faint of heart. Whatever a marathon requires of you, an ultramarathon demands it ten-fold. This is not to say those who complete a marathon are not "good enough" in some way... I simply mean to say that as hard as they worked to rise above the "common runner"... there is a whole level of achievement still waiting for those people.

And once again, I'll be taking on this task.

This weekend I, and many people like me, will take on the Ghost Train Rail Trail Race. Ghost Train is an ultramarathon which gives you 30 hours to complete as many 15 mile loops of the course as you can. Many come to this event hoping to claim a 100 mile finish, and the prize of a rail spike to commemorate their stunning victory. That's what I took home last year, and it's what I intend to bring home this year as well.

But what does it take to run an ultra?

Many people find out these incredible, impossible feats exist... and wonder "how?". How exactly does one break the limits of the "common man" and rise up to conquer such a feat? That is exactly what we discuss in Episode 60 of the podcast.

What's in this episode:

We talk about the busy week I’ve been having

Ultramarathons, what they are, and why you’d do one

The Ghost Train Rail Trail Race in particular

And we get into things YOU need to know to be better prepared including

Things to pack

Clothing, gear, and fueling considerations

A bit about pacers and crew

Strategy, risk management

And some final thoughts about what this is gonna be like including an answer to the question:

Are you ready?

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! FitBite #1 - Why Sport Needs To Be Good Clean Fun, Pure And Simple

Society is ruining everything.

Sorry to start off with a downer, but seriously... things are going to hell in a handbasket lately. It seems like nothing is sacred anymore, and the places we used to go to escape the noise are the latest victims being poisoned by the issues of today. Sport is a place that should be good, clean fun... but what I saw the other day tells me we're teetering on a very dangerous ledge.

Bad attitudes are viral.

All it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch - that's the old saying, right? Some days it seems truer than others. This past weekend FitWife Megan and I worked a half marathon and saw someone have a fit about something. Seeing that, and thinking about the deeper meaning and motivation behind it... made me think about things. Made me think about sport, and the innocence and purity it SHOULD have. About how it needs to remain the sacred place it is. So on this FIRST installment of The FitBite... we dive in and tackle it head on.

What's in this episode:

We finally solve a problem!

We broach the topic of how running, and sport in general, needs to remain a fun, innocent getaway... at all costs.

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #59 - Tomorrow Sounds Like A Really Fantastic Day

The irony is killing me.

These show notes have been in draft form for a couple days now. The episode itself was recorded the day after I wanted to publish it. And here we are. Still just now getting ready to publish. I think it's safe to say... we all land in this boat sometimes, yeah?

Nice to be my own best example.

I had a whole set of notes typed up and ready to go for this episode. I hunkered down, did my best to focus, and cranked it out. I had a whole, somewhat inspiring thing written about delaying and doing things "tomorrow. I talked about intent, and how we end up in this position. I even called myself out and said "damn it all, we're gonna get this right!".

And instead, here we are.

It's Sunday afternoon. This podcast episode... #59... was supposed to be published 3 days ago. This past THURSDAY. And yet, here I sit. At 4:30 on Sunday afternoon... retyping the show notes and getting ready to publish it. Again, to be fair, I had MEANT to publish yesterday. I hit "publish" and everything. But my wifi was disconnected and all the copy disappeared. You ever write a paper in school and accidentally close the window without saving? Paragraphs upon paragraphs... maybe even whole PAGES of your document... gone. Yeah... not the sort of thing that gets you amped up. I tried to re-write what I had... but at that point... it's so frustrating you just can't. So I said I'd come back to it later.

Welcome to the point of the discussion, FitFriends.

Later... Tomorrow... they seem like a really fantastic time, right? Right now I'm so frustrated... or upset... or overwhelmed... or overworked... or WHATEVER. But tomorrow... well, tomorrow I won't feel that way anymore. TOMORROW I can get this thing done!

There's a few problems with that theory, though.

Unfortunately, Tomorrow isn't as shiny and infallible as we make it out to be. As a matter of fact, there's quite a few large problems with Tomorrow... not the least of which is the fact that it often doesn't actually come. And this, my friends... is the discussion at hand. The grass isn't always greener on the other side...

What's in this episode:

We bid a "warm" welcome to Fall

We talk big changes coming for Darrell and So THIS Is Fitness

We talk about "Tomorrow"...

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #58 - 4 Things To Know About Being A Personal Trainer

It takes a lot to be a Personal Trainer

I'm not just talking about knowing the body or counting reps. I'm not just talking about a great before and after photo to show off to potential clients. If you're thinking about becoming a Personal Trainer, thinking about working with one, or you're ALREADY working with one... you should consider these things I have to share...

I feel like I need a dual degree for this...

Living my life the way I do now, I often feel like I should've majored in exercise science in college. Of course, that opens up the whole "coulda, woulda, shoulda" conversation, and frankly... If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably do it all the same. In the end, living college the way I did landed me in a position to have that breakdown where I made a change. If that hadn't happened... Well, I wouldn't have found fitness, running, or this career I love.

But man, nobody's prepared enough for this.

When I said I feel like I need a dual degree for this... the other one would be psychology... or something like it. Idunno... what kind of degree does a therapist get?

That's not meant to be an insult in the slightest.

I'm dead serious - There's a whole side to this job that a lot of people don't consider - the emotional. If you're gonna be worth your salt as a personal trainer, you HAVE to get to know people. Not just the surface-level, 2 kids and a dog stuff. I'm talking DEEP. I'm talking what makes these people tick, what stops them up, and what's gonna make or break them. The deeper motivations that drive them to success or failure.

That information doesn't come cheap.

When you get someone's deepest, darkest secrets, you get a whole lot of emotional baggage dumped on you. Sure, you can unpack it for them and lighten the load... But it takes a toll on you. There's a certain emotional currency you have to spend each and every day to do this job. It's almost like in The Green Mile (I only saw the movie) where Michael Clarke Duncan's character takes someone's illness upon himself and expels it out into the ether. It knocks him out for a while... takes a toll on him.

Don't mistake my meaning here.

This is most certainly a worthwhile venture. What I mean to say by all this... is the job isn't for everyone. I MEAN that if you're considering being a trainer... the emotional side of the job should be a big consideration. Again - this is MOST certainly a worthwhile venture. When you're able to get to the deeper levels of what makes a person who they are... you can find out where they REALLY want to be... and why. Then, you can begin to help them get there.

There are other considerations, of course.

Time, schedule, and your availability are all major considerations. These all help answer the bigger, and frankly very important question of "can I make a reliable living doing this?". The short answer? "It depends."

Not an entirely satisfying answer, I know.

What's in this episode:

Darrell's feeling a bit under the weather

We share some quick thoughts about seasonal change

We talk about 4 things YOU need to consider about being a Personal Trainer

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #57 - Wasting The Gift - Why To Capitalize On Your Good Fortune

We're luckier than we realize.

Most of us go through life taking for granted what we've got. I'm not saying we're spoiled... I'm saying we don't know any better. Just like a small child doesn't understand the value of a dollar... maybe we don't realize the value of the gifts we've been given...

I've been thinking a lot lately...

There's a quote that's been on my mind from Steve Prefontaine - a prolific track and field athlete from the 70's.

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."

I'm sure he was speaking in terms of professional or collegiate athletes giving their best performance in a competition setting. I think, however, what he said can apply just as easily to the rest of us. Yes, this is applicable to us "normies" in our daily life. More specifically, I think it's applicable to us in our fitness endeavors.

We aren't giving it our best.

More often than not, anyway, I find this to be true. I know if I look myself in the mirror and ask if I'm giving my best... it's a hard "no". But what does "giving your best" even mean? And what "gifts" are we wasting?

What's in this episode:

I make some assumptions about you

we chat about the gifts we've been given

and why not to waste them!

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #56 - We're Stronger Together - How To Achieve "Impossible" Goals

We all need a hand now and then.

Sometimes its to get where we're going... and sometimes it's to admit our TRUE destination. The fitness industry should be more than just a building full of equipment. It should be about coaches. And genuine care. With that kind of help... you can acknowledge your REAL goal. You know what I'm talking about...

There's something you're SECRETLY hoping to achieve.

It's that goal that floats in the back of your head. The one that's just beyond what you say out loud. The goal you think is a little too ambitious... so you pretend you don't want it. You're afraid you won't achieve it, and you don't want to set yourself up for a let-down. Well... I've got news for you.

You only reach what you pursue.

You're never gonna reach that secret goal if you don't start going after it. If you're afraid of failure, you paralyze yourself. When you don't move... don't act... of COURSE you're never gonna get there. At least, if you try, you've got a shot. And if your goal is in the least bit reasonable... who says you can't get there?

We are our own worst enemy.

I keep saying it, and will CONTINUE to say it... #54 - How To Win The War On Apathy And Ambivalence

Sometimes... you just can't hold it in.

Most days I have a lot on my mind. Things bug me, but I don't always take up a whole podcast episode to get it out of my system.. Sometimes, though... I just have to let it out and talk about it. Today is one of those days. I saw something on my way to work the other day that just sent me flying.

We're fighting a war.

Yes. a war. And today, I'm gonna tell you how to WIN. Today is all about letting you know how to win the war on apathy and ambivalence.

Isn't it a little extreme to call this a "war"?

Y'know what? No. No, I don't think so. I'm not gonna get all preachy on you... but trying to get people to spend time and money on their fitness... all too often it becomes a battle. And wars are made up of many battles. Follow my logic here?

In the end... it's pretty simple. And it's what we get into this episode.

For the full blog post / show notes click here!

What's in this episode:

We get right to it - a chat about apathy, ambivalence, ignorance and laziness... and how to beat them.

Episode Resources

"America The Fat" blog post on So THIS Is Fitness

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #53 - Essential Oils 101 - What YOU Need To Know

Sometimes treasure is hiding in plain sight.

I don't know everything... nor will I ever claim to. When I find some new information that I feel has benefit not only to me, but to others... I want to share it! In the not-too-distant past I discovered "essential oils". I had seen them in passing but didn't know what they were... and didn't feel the need to investigate. As far as I knew they were just a small army of weird little bottles behind the counter at the natural food/supplement stores. When I went to NOW Foods headquarters in Illinois for a blogger event, though... one of our info workshops was all about essential oils.

Boy oh boy... what a game-changer!

I was impressed, intrigued, and I had to know more. From there, I totally fell down the rabbit hole, and I feel like everyone should know the benefits of this stuff. THAT is why I chatted for an hour with Tina, Neil, and Alana from NOW Health Group (NOW Foods) all about "essential oils". This episode serves as a primer on all things "essential oil" - think of it as Essential Oils 101 - What YOU need to know about them. This is also the kick-off to what may end up being a WHOLE YEAR'S WORTH of articles, posts, and recipes. So BUCKLE UP - this is gonna be a good one :D

So... how bout the basics?

There is a TON of information in this episode, but let's break down some of the most basic basics to give you an idea.

-Essential Oils are a liquid.

These are oils/liquids that are distilled from a plant of some kind - like lavender, orange, clove, and many others. It's said that they were originally called essential oils because they were believed to hold the very essence of the aroma and the plant itself. There are two main methods used - steam distillation or cold pressing. In the end, sure, what's extracted is likely the very stuff of the plant that makes it smell like what it is. When it's all said and done they come in a little tiny glass bottle, typically amber colored.

-Essential Oils are a "volatile aromatic compound".

The really simple way to explain this is: "Volatile" means this liquid/oil very easily goes from liquid to gas at a relatively low temperature, like room temperature. Don't forget - when you smell something, it's because itty bitty particles of the thing itself have hit your smell receptors! So when you take the cap off and smell what's in the bottle, that's the liquid turning to gas and going in your nose! It happens that easily, and that's part of what makes essential oils ideal for aromatherapy.

-There are a few different ways to use essential oils.

The two main ways to use essential oils are topically and via aromatherapy. Topical uses include massage oil, in a bath, a spray mist, a roll-on stick, and many others. Aromatherapy use could be through a room spray or, more commonly, a diffuser. There IS a third way - internally. This method, however, is VERY controversial and can be dangerous.

-Essential oils should be treated with caution.

Essential oils are typically sold at 100% purity. They are very potent and should ALWAYS be mixed or diluted to prevent irritation, burning, and other adverse reactions. Typically, a 1% to 3% ratio is what is recommended for normal use. There are some essential oils that, in their pure undiluted form, should NEVER come into contact with skin. There are even MORE essential oils that should NEVER be ingested or otherwise taken internally. A good rule of thumb - if it's not the essential oil of a plant or fruit you'd actually eat in real life, you shouldn't consume the oil. The EVEN SAFER option? Simply do not ingest essential oils unless you've got doctor's orders.

-There are plenty of benefits, both proven and unproven.

Odds are your doctor will never tell you to ingest essential oils. As a matter of fact, they probably won't tell you to use them at all. At present, there's not a whole lot out there in the scientific community that suggests essential oils should be used medicinally. You'll hear many stories, websites, and people telling you that it's great for cuts and bruises, that it's great to calm an upset stomach, etc... but at present the science simply isn't supporting that. There ARE, however, plenty of acknowledged benefits for mood and mental health. I mean, YOU just try and smell some fresh lemon oil without smiling :)

There's SO much more to essential oils than just what's right here. Give a listen and see what you think! Then, stay tuned to this site for a ton of articles and recipes about essential oils that are soon to come!

For the full blog post / show notes click here!

What's in this episode:

We chat with Tina, Neil, and Alana from NOW Foods all about Essential oils, and we cover -

What IS an essential oil and how are they made

What do they do and how do you use them

Safety, quality, do’s and don’ts

And how to get started!

Get Started With Essential Oils NOW!

Buy NOW Foods Diffusers on Amazon

My Favorite - Black Metal Touch Diffuser

Buy NOW Foods Essential Oil kits on Amazon

My first one - Put Some Pep In Your Step

Buy NOW Foods Essential Oil blends on Amazon

Episode Resources

NOW Foods official website

NOW Foods Essential Oils info page

Podcast Episode #36 - "Doing The Right Thing - NOW Foods" interview w/ CEO Jim Emme

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #52 - How To Define Success And Failure - Anchor Down Recap

I talk a big game sometimes...

Going into Anchor Down 24 Hour Ultramarathon... I made a bold statement. I said, just like I did before Ghost Train Rail Trail Race last year, that I was coming for a belt buckle. The only acceptable outcome of the race was a 100 mile finish. I did not finish 100 miles at Anchor Down... and I had to figure something out - how to define success and failure. In recapping the event... I'm pretty sure, at least in this instance, I've managed to map out the gray area and do just that.

Anchor Down Ultra is an incredible event.

This was my second showing at Anchor Down, and it did not disappoint. With a beautiful course, top notch support, and a supportive atmosphere, it's tough to go wrong with this race. I could go on for days about this race, but the bottom line is... it's simply superb. The course is 2.45 miles through Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island - .95 miles of it is trail while the remaining 1.5 is paved walkways in the park. There's minimal elevation gain and a large chunk of the course overlooks Narragansett Bay - yes, right up along the water. It's a beautiful course that, despite its relatively short length, you will not get tired of looking at. The aid stations are fully stocked and the volunteers & crew are amazingly helpful - even the vendors show up ready to go! Anchor Down provides all of this in 6, 12, and 24 hour flavors, giving runners an excellent opportunity to flex their muscles and see what they're made of. At Anchor Down, you've got one of the best chances you could ask for to succeed. But... what is success here, really?

For the full blog post / show notes click here!

What's in this episode:

A recap of my race at Anchor Down 24 Hour Ultra

How to define success and failure

A roundtable discussion on the overall experience at Anchor Down Ultra, and big Ultra in general, with my crew - FitWife Megan, Mom and Dad

Episode Resources

www.AnchorDownUltra.com

So THIS Is Fitness Podcast #51 - "Why do we run... and what does it take?" #51- Why Do We Run... And What Does It Take?

There's more to a race than you think.

There's so much that goes into a race, yes, of course, from the participant's side... but from the Race Director, too. I was fortunate enough to have a chat with a buddy of mine, Jay, who is both a runner AND a race director (I find the best ones are) about exactly what's involved. Jay joined us in the studio to chat about runners, both "normal distance" and ultra distance... the differences between the two, and what makes us tick. He also talks about what it takes to be a race director for both crowds (and in general). We talk about Anchor Down 24 hour too... but there's so much more than that... We talk about endurance... the beauty of running... and, really... the human spirit.

The deeper you go... the deeper it gets.

I'm talking about ALL of it. The deeper you get into this thing, the deeper everything runs. The connections you make with people... the stories you share... the emotion you feel when people succeed and the crushing blow you feel when they fail. You get invested in the journey and the ending to the story. And that's exactly what happens on this episode... and in our chat... and undoubtedly... it's what will happen this weekend at Anchor Down 24 Hour Ultramarathon.

What's in this episode:

Reflecting as I stare destiny in the face again

Jay Paganelli joins us in the studio to talk:

The difference between "normal" runners and Ultra runners

What it's like to be a Race Director

Why we run and what it takes to make a race happen

What to expect in a 24 hour ultramarathon, and more specifically - Anchor Down

The 10 Commandments of Endurance

Connect with Jay Paganelli and his races

www.RunTrueNorth.com

www.GansettSummer.com

www.AnchorDownUltra.com

St. Jude's Walk To End Childhood Cancer - Greater Boston

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #50 - Who are you, and what do you REALLY want?

Do you REALLY know yourself?

Every once in a while... it's important to stop and "check yourself". Are you happy? With work, home life, your relationships? Are you where you thought you were going to be? Have you achieved what you thought you were going to achieve? How did you even get here? Good or bad - you should know. And if you're not happy... perhaps you need to ask the important questions. Who am I? Why am I here? What do I REALLY want?

Are you willing to look deep, and get really honest?

The first rule to achieving your highest potential, in any field, is to know yourself. Really, pick up any self-help book or even well-respected and famous texts like Sun Tsu's "The Art Of War" - they all agree on this point. Most of us probably think we really do know ourselves... but there's a problem. Most of us go through life more or less going through the motions. We don't typically question our situation, our "lot in life", so to speak. We tend to accept what we're given and be pleased with where we get. We don't stop to think if we really get it, and if we've dug deep enough.

What's in this episode:

Holy Crap - 50 episodes!

What’s new and in development for me, the fitwife, and So THIS Is Fitness

And we answer the questions of Who are you… why are you here, and what do you REALLY want?

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #49 - Fight Your Monster And Take Back Your Life

We all have monsters to fight.

Some things are tougher to deal with than others. We all have our own struggles and battles, and some might seem impossible to win. Even if you've won a battle or two... maybe you can't seem to win the war. What's worse - some of these things we fight... other people can't understand it. To them, it might as well be... some imaginary monster we're fighting. Despite that, you can't give up. There are people that get it... and that are rooting for you. Like us.

We've got our own monsters, too.

Yes, me and FitWife Megan have monsters we fight... frankly I think hers are a little harder to beat than mine. That's why we're talking about them. Now. On episode 49 of the podcast. We have a conversation that, honestly, was a bit difficult for Megan... but it's important to talk about. Airing some of these things out, saying it out loud, and acknowledging it, whether in private with yourself or in a more public forum like we are can be an important and helpful "swing of the sword" in the fight against your monster.

So, my question to you: What's YOUR monster? Comment and share, or email us at podcast@sothisisfitness.com. #48 - The Big Guy and The Power of Community

You are not alone.

It can be easy to think you're all alone, on a little island, whether you're struggling with nutrition, fitness, or specifically running. I'm here to tell you... you're not alone. There is a larger community you are a part of whether you realize it or not, and there are many smaller communities still that you can become a part of intentionally. Ted Spiker joins me on Episode 48 of the podcast to talk about exactly that.

You DO belong, and you're doing great!

Ted, through his interest in and passion for fitness and running, has created what has become quite the community. He's created a vehicle for people to identify with someone, or many someones, who are dealing with and fighting through the same struggles they are themselves. Maybe, with a little bit of a hand reaching out, we can all make it a little more do-able to achieve our goals and reach that next success... whether it's a sub-30 5k... or something else.

What's in this episode:

Dealing with a potential injury close to race day

EXERCISE MIGHT KILL YOU!

Too much of a good thing is bad for you!

We chat with Professor Ted Spiker about

Writing for health and fitness

The Runner’s World Big Guy Blog

The Sub-30 Club

And the fact that YOU are not alone.

Episode Resources

Runner's World Big Guy Blog

Sub-30 Club on Facebook

Ted Spiker's Website

Find Ted on Twitter

Find Ted on Instagram

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get $100 off your new Leesa Mattress! #47 - Yes, you DO have what it takes!

Run a marathon and change your life...

It's no secret that I TRULY believe in the transformative power of running. When I go running for long enough I find my happy place, my mind can wander stress-free, and I can just... be. I realize it doesn't work for everyone this way, but it does for me, and it does for many others. I'd love for more people to discover this... problem is, so many people out there don't just think marathons are crazy... they simply think they're not capable.

That's why I'm so excited about this interview!

I was THRILLED to have Angie and Trevor of the Marathon Training Academy podcast on the show. Their whole "thing" is based around empowering you to run a marathon and change your life. Their SLOGAN is "you HAVE WHAT IT TAKES to run a marathon and change your life". I absolutely love this, and I thought we had a great chat all about it.

What's in this episode:

ICYMI… IT’S HOT AND GROSS OUT!

The internet RUINED my day!

What’s In the box

The joy of Yoga!

A chat with Angie and Trevor of the Marathon Training Academy podcast!

Episode Resources

Marathon Training Academy website

Marathon Training Academy Podcast

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Foolproof Brewing Company's website

Hophead Events website

#46 - How To Embrace The Powerful Secret Weapon Inside You.

There is REAL power deep inside you.

I feel like I talk about this every single day... I also feel like it's not really given the weight and consideration it deserves. "Belief" has incredible power and weight. Simply believing something hard enough can make it real. Yes, really. #45 - Snake Oil And Deception In The Fitness World

I love what I do, and I take it seriously.

Fitness isn't just narcissism, gym selfies, and aesthetics. For some people, it's about very real, very important changes. Physical and emotional health and well-being could be at stake. This is important... crucial... and in some very extreme cases... even life or death. So naturally, while I do enjoy my job... #42 - Does Your Gym Really Love You?

What stands out, really, in the fitness industry?

It’s a question I’m sure almost nobody things to ask, but I’m asking it. Does your gym really love you? And do YOU love it back? It’s weird, right? To think of it like that? What does that even mean? It’s a place with stuff you pick up and put down. A place with stuff you run on. You swipe a key card or fob or id badge or something and you do stuff. Sometimes I go. Sometimes I don’t. We go out there and do the previously impossible on a regular basis without batting an eyelash. Without it dawning on us that, yes, just a short while ago I wouldn't have dreamed of this. We should really give ourselves more credit.

As hard as we may push... there's a deeper level most will never tap into.

We always encourage each other to "push harder" and "dig deep" to hit that last rep, those last few minutes, that last few plays, the last few hundred yards of the race... but what happens when you're participating in not just an endurance event... but an ultra endurance event? What happens when you get put in a position where you must dig deeper than deep?

You find a place we didn't know existed before... and there, you find out who you really are.

What's in this episode:

this has gotta be FUN!

Sharing the experience with friends and family

Back to Pineland Farms Trail Festival

Digging Deeper than “deep”

what’s really in it for those of us who choose ultra endurance sports.

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Foolproof Brewing Company's website

Hophead Events website

#39 - On The Eve Of Battle

(See www.SoTHISIsFitness.com/podcast39 for extended show notes/blog)

On the eve of a great battle, there is much to do.

There are plans to be finalized, preparations to be made. Warriors have to gear up and mentally prepare for what they're about to do. When we're about to take on a new phase of our journey... well... we're no different. Instead of swords and shields, we're donning running shoes and a water bottle, or cross-trainers and a sweat towel. And yes, we ARE about to do battle... just in a different way. It's wholly appropriate to hunker down and view it as such in order to get your head right for what's to come.

Yes, there's that mental part, too.

Just as it's important for the warrior to mentally prepare for the rigors of battle, and just as he's got no choice but to envision total victory... so too must you. When we're about to take on a new phase in our fitness journey, we HAVE to believe it's going to be successful. We MUST have confidence in our ability to succeed! And we simply CANNOT doubt ourselves. It's that simple. And that's the topic of discussion today, kids - how to handle yourself on the eve of battle. However hyperbolic that might sound.

What's in this episode:

Interesting happenings at the gym

Life is actually pretty good right now

What to do when you're about to embark on a major journey

including a conversation with Katrina White all about the upcoming Pineland Farms 50 Mile Ultramarathon

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Foolproof Brewing Company's website

Hophead Events website

You pour yourself into training, you get your significant other to help out and pick up the slack... you give it everything you've got! And God forbid something happens on race day to knock things out of orbit... like an extra half-mile added to your marathon... You're going to be heartbroken. Or go ballistic. Y'know, depending on your personality.

But what happens when the love is gone?

We're not ALWAYS going to be in love with running... or fitness for that matter. There's a ton of info online to tell you what to do, how to do it, and how to make it stick. The fact of the matter is... it's usually easier said than done. We all know the phrase... and it's true.

Despite best efforts, sometimes we hit a wall and can't do it

It happens to the best of us. We know what we need to do, and we know how to do it. Did I mention "WE KNOW WE NEED TO DO IT"? And yet somehow it still doesn't click. This is the part nobody online offers a "how-to" book for... "how-to" defeat this awkward cycle of failure even though I'M EFFING TRYING! Well.. that's why we're here today folks - I've got the super-secret sauce that nobody bothered to share. When you come across a company that's doing it right... well, it can catch you off-guard. It's refreshing, to say the least, but it really makes you take notice because of how rare it is. I have taken notice - NOW Foods is one such company.

"If you have to ask if you're doing the right thing... you're not."

That came out of the CEO's mouth during our 2 day "influencer immersion event", where we toured the facilities, learned all about NOW, and just generally got the royal treatment. It was impressive to hear something like that come from a major CEO... and it wa even more impressive to see it reflected in the company and its staff in real life. So... why does a company care? Why go to all that trouble, as he describes in our chat, to ensure quality without charging twice as much?

What's in this episode:

Recapping the SUPER busy past week Darrell had

Previewing the Providence Marathon

Chat with Jim Emme - CEO of NOW Foods

all things NOW Foods

Vitamins, Supplements, and Regulation

Healthy eating

Honesty, Integrity, and Doing The Right Thing

Episode Resources

NOW Foods website

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - Darrell@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get 10% off Addaday products with code SoTHISIsFitness10

Foolproof Brewing Company's website

Hophead Events website

We routinely underrate our true potential, and assume we can only go so high up on the achievement ladder. We see the accomplishments of others and rank ourselves against them... assuming that if THAT'S where THEY can get... we must be somewhere down just a little bit below them.

We need to believe we can rise above mediocrity.

We are capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for. IF we can just STOP stopping ourselves and reach a little higher... it'd turn everything upside down. THAT... is exactly what happened to Maggie Guterl. One day, she decided to "get serious", talked to a coach... and guess what her coach told her? That she could achieve something amazing. And she pushed Maggie to it. And she did it. #34 - Tough Ruck

(See www.SoTHISIsFitness.com/podcast34 for extended show notes/blog)

Tough Ruck was born from fire and baptized in bravery.

When the Boston Marathon was bombed in 2013... terrorists thought they crushed us. Instead, they showed the true colors of the City of Boston, its people, and its visitors. A number of those had been ruck marching the marathon - after ruck marching 26.2 miles, hearing the call, they sprang into action helping in any way they can. With increased security, they weren't able to ruck march the marathon in full gear again.

Rather than be defeated, they were re-born from the ashes.

Tough Ruck was born from the fire of the Boston Marathon bomb blasts and baptized in the bravery of the men and women who acted so quickly and instinctively to serve their fellow man. It's that exact spirit, honor, and love of their fellow man that makes Tough Ruck what it is. There's no way to truly describe it, you simply have to experience it. On this episode of the podcast... we introduce you to Tough Ruck and chat with those who made it happen... and those who rucked it this year.

For the extended show notes and blog, check out www.SoTHISIsFitness.com

What's in this episode:

Darrell's still bad at time management

Boston Marathon Weekend

a new "What's In The Box?"

Tough Ruck

what it is

where it came from

why you should care

Episode Resources

Tough Ruck Website

Millitary Friends Foundation Website

Team RWB

The Boston Marathon

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - Darrell@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get 10% off Addaday products with code SoTHISIsFitness10

Foolproof Brewing Company's website - $5 off Fool's Mile IV registration with code "sothisisfitness5"

Hophead Events website

(Photo Credit - Maia Kennedy Photography)

No grand designs of fame, fortune, and conquering. Simply... "I want to run Boston"... or... "I'd like to stay fit in the off-season". And then, before you know it... you're crushing several 100 mile ultramarathons in a year and setting world records running marathons in 7 continents... at 42 years old... like Mike Wardian.

Age is just a number... and "I Can't" is an attitude, not a fact.

I can't stress... not today, not ever... how critical it is that you have a little faith in yourself and believe you can do it. That's what Mike did, and it's what he does every day. Now - plenty of people out there know WHO Mike is and what he's done. What most people DON'T know... is how this incredible running machine was created. On episode 33 of the podcast... we have a great conversation and talk about exactly that. It's the sort of thing that makes you stop and think. This thing... if you look at it in a big picture sort of way... kind of makes you realize (as if you needed another clue)... that maybe there is no limit to what we are capable of.

It's all relative. Put this in perspective.

An event called The Barkley Marathons occurred this past weekend. It is widely regarded to be (one of) the hardest footrace(s) on the planet. This past weekend... a man named John Kelly became the 15th ever finisher in the race's 31 year history.

Many people think that in order to achieve something like this you must be a super-elite athlete... a world-record holder... and have top results in the "biggest and baddest" ultramarathons out there. John does not fit this description. Instead... he is an "average joe". He trained properly, respected the event, and had a no-quit attitude. John Kelly is proof to us all that it IS possible... whatever it is... as long as you put in the work and believe in yourself. Lucky for us... he's joined me today to tell his tale.

For the extended show notes and blog, check out www.SoTHISIsFitness.com

What's in this episode:

Darrell has a new job!

Megan makes AMAZING Turkey Chili

The Barkley Marathons happened last weekend

John Kelly - Barkley Marathons 2017 finisher/winner (15th ever) joins us!

WHO IS John Kelly?

Life outside of running

Getting into running

The ultramarathon switch

Why Barkley

The first 2 attempts

Barkley Marathons success... and how to achieve it

Episode Resources

John's Blog - Random Forrest Runner

The Barkley Marathons wikipedia page

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - Darrell@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

iPhone / iTunes - Subscribe

Android devices - Subscribe

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Get 10% off Addaday products with code SoTHISIsFitness10

Foolproof Brewing Company's website - $5 off Fool's Mile IV registration with code "sothisisfitness5"

Hophead Events website

True North Running Co. website

#31 - Old Dogs, New Tricks, and Baby Steps

(See www.SoTHISIsFitness.com/podcast31 for extended show notes/blog)

Habits are hard to break... but it CAN be done.

After much pondering, it dawns on me that despite having everything you need to achieve success... it is possible to not even make it out the gate. You can have attainable goals. You can have a plan in place. You can have support systems and you can have the tools themselves necessary to complete the task... but in the end... none of that may matter. Why?

Old habits may be holding you back.

The thing that keeps you from getting out of bed early to do your workout... The thing that keeps you from stopping at the gym on your way home... it might just be an old, ingrained habit... a tendency from days gone by... that you simply can't break out of yet. Let's have a chat about habits... and how maybe... we might have the key to the lock. We might have the solution to breaking it and getting you to the promised land. Forewarning: it's going to involve work, trusting yourself (and me)... and a lot of time. #30 - True Triumph: Mike Collins

(See www.SoTHISIsFitness.com/podcast30 for extended show notes/blog)

There are more ways to triumph than weight loss.

There's a concept in the fitness world, which I have talked about many times... called "non-scale victories". Often times the scale might not move as much as we'd like and we get discouraged. Times like those it's important to celebrate the non-scale victories, like "hey, that shirt fits great now!" or "I finished a 5K!" or "wow, I just finished the Spartan Ultra Beast at Mt. Killington!"

Ok... some people are more extreme than others.

My guest for Episode 30 of the podcast is a True Triumph in all senses of the word. This guy took charge, picked himself up out of a situation that was hazardous to his health, and got it together. First... for his kids... then... for himself... and after that? Well... now he's shepherding his crew towards THEIR big non-scale victory.

Mike is the kind of guy we should all strive to be. Check out his story, share it with a friend, and let's show the world how to #LiveLifeLimitless!

For the extended show notes and blog, check out www.SoTHISIsFitness.com

What's in this episode:

Thanks for the support on the career move!

So much to do!

Sickness? It's one of the more challenging, the oldest, and the most prestigious marathons you can hope to participate in. It is highly desired and notoriously difficult to get in to. You've either got to run another marathon VERY fast to qualify, or you've got to be accepted to a charity team and raise gobs of money. But how exactly does that even work?

Peter Villa, of the "How Was Your Run Today?" podcast, joins us to talk about exactly that. #26 - The Other Side

There exists a massive gap in the fitness world.

There's where you currently stand... and then there's "the other side". Maybe you're at the beginning looking toward the end... Across the incredible divide separating you from future you... You from "I finished, the end" you...

Maybe you're there, in "I achieved it" land... And you're trying to remember what motivated you and got you there in the first place.

Maybe you're that fit trainer and you can't understand how these people can't just stop being fat.

Whatever the case... Understanding "the other side" can be a challenging... If not impossible task. So let's try to shed some light on it, eh?

In a nutshell... this episode is about:

Understanding "the gap" in the fitness industry

Why some trainers, fitness professionals, and gyms in general "don't get it".

Understanding "the gap" in your own personal fitness

Why it's so hard to get started

Why it can be so easy to fall off

Why it can be so hard to get back into it after falling off

A lot of this... well... maybe you already know. Maybe you already HAD the epiphany. But maybe not. #25 - Celebration

It's an awfully long road you're on...

Yes, YOU. All of us, really. Life is a journey, our chosen goals and targets are a journey... all of this is a journey. Most journeys are gonna be pretty long. Every so often, along the way, it's important to stop and celebrate the little victories on the road to total success.

Appreciation is pretty important, too.

We may not always be satisfied with our current lot in life... but it's important to be grateful and appreciative of what we CURRENTLY have. Once we've wrapped our heads around THAT... we can start working towards where we DO want to be. SO, for our EPIC (har har) 25th episode - we tackle these two important points. Yes, today's episode is that simple:

Appreciation

Control what you can

Celebration

My challenge to YOU

Thanks to all of you for sticking with me for 25 episodes - I fully intend to bring you (many more than) 25 more, and the quality is only gonna continue to improve - content, production values, and more.

***Apologies for the "buzz buzz" at the end of the episode.***

Resources:

Episode 24 - "It's Not Enough" (time management resources)

Why Workouts Fail #2 - The Scale

Connect with So THIS Is Fitness

Facebook

Instagram

The Fitwife's Instagram!

Twitter

Email - podcast@sothisisfitness.com

Listen to the So THIS Is Fitness Podcast

To listen, you can either use the player below OR browse the following links:

Subscribe On iTunes

Subscribe On Android

Subscribe via RSS

Support the show by supporting our sponsors!

Visit Foolproof Brewing Company's website

Visit the Hophead Events website

Visit the True North Running Co. website

#24 - "It's Not Enough"

"It's not enough".

We get told, every single day, that "it's not enough". The "it" may vary, and the person telling us that "it's not enough" varies too. The point remains the same. We don't measure up. We are not yet satisfactory. IT is not yet satisfactory. Maybe that "it" is "the amount of time we have in a day". Maybe that "it" is "how pretty you are". "It" could be any number of things. There are some very important things to consider. On this lovely snow day, I took a moment to stop, smell the (snow-covered) roses, and really think about all of this. It's not an easy thing to talk about... but I'm good at talking. #23 - This Time WILL Be Different

Sometimes we get locked into a sick cycle of failure.
When that happens... things can seem pretty hopeless. We can seem completely lost. Permanently locked into a neverending circle of mediocrity and non-progress. Eventually, we might give up hope of success completely. It's when we find ourselves in those desperate, terrible situations... that we need to believe in ourselves and the power of change more than ever. We need to believe that we CAN try again... and that THIS time... things WILL be different. We NEED to BELIEVE. It's time we try. Just ONE more time.
I've been there. I get it.
This is hard. It can seem completely hopeless. it can seem like a lost cause and you'll never get there... especially since you've already tried this 5 times with no positive result. Y'know what? Like the old saying goes... fall down 7 times... get up 8. It's up to us to believe... that THIS TIME... just one... last... try... This time... things CAN... and WILL... be different. There's a method to the madness here. Today's episode will cover the following bases:

My run today and what I think it means for my big goals

My “big resurgence” with STIF

How to ACTUALLY have THIS time be different. Do that by:

Acknowledging past failures, owning it, and being able to move forward

Understanding WHY and HOW you failed in the past

Know yourself

Getting your head right

Setting the goal

Developing the plan

Executing and following through

Figuring out what happens when you get there

I firmly believe, as a result of having been there, that if you just BELIEVE firmly enough... this time really, truly CAN and WILL be different. #22 - Balance and Wine

Life is tough.
No matter how awesome you are, sometimes life can kick you in the tail. That's just the way it is. There's no preparing for it, there's no guarding against it... If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. It's times like these that you need to bring a little balance and wine into your life.
Ok, not literally balance and wine...
I KIND of mean that in the literal sense, but mostly the philosophical sense... Roll with me here... This past weekend I attended the South Shore Food and Wine Expo with my mom and Megan. We had a ton of fun, tried lots of new things, and the idea for this week's episode was born.
In this episode:

A heart to heart about wants vs needs

Finding balance when life "gets in the way"

Moving things off the chore list and into the fun zone

A recap of the South Shore Food and Wine Expo

Check out my guests! The event was great, and I was thrilled to meet so many awesome vendors! #21 - Winter Warriors & Why We Do It

It's always easier to "not".
It doesn't take much for us to stay in bed, sit on the couch, and otherwise simply NOT do it. When you factor in the bitter cold, snow, wind, and all-around poor conditions of winter... you can just forget the whole "getting outside for a run" thing. Maybe that's why folks who DO go out there and run despite the winter chill are called "winter warriors". It's not such a crazy concept, when you really break it down... and understanding the "why"? Well...if you're in this fitness thing, or you're even THINKING about it... I bet you'll get it. There's plenty to go over in this episode... I wasn't really sure what to expect from this episode when the idea struck me. What I ended up with was...dare I say... pretty awesome. I had the opportunity to interview 4 people who all had some interesting and different ideas on why THEY get out there despite the bitter winter cold. Their stories ranged from pretty normal to pretty extraordinary.
So what exactly is in this episode?

Revisiting my big goals for this year, and what kind of a start that's off to.

Winter Warlock 5K, 10K, 13.1, & 18 Miler 2017

What's In The Box - January Edition

On-site at Winter Warlock

Participant experience

Why they are Winter Warriors

My thoughts on why to be a Winter Warrior

Be sure to check out the Dave's Antarctica marathon plan and the My Luu charity links below! Brief Video Summary of Dave's Plan to Run in Antarctica: https://youtu.be/xmEOPyxpeWY The My Luu Memorial Fund: https://www.crowdrise.com/myluufund Thanks to my sponsors! www.hopheadevents.com www.runtruenorth.com www.foolproofbrewing.com

#20 - We All Only Get One Shot To Live

By now, we know how I feel about "limits".
If you've ever heard my podcast or read the blog you KNOW - I am a FIRM believer that the only limits we TRULY have are the ones we set for ourselves. Well, I might not have really stopped to think how or why we imagine those limits to exist in the first place.
Now, I'm thinking about it a little more.
I think I understand, just a little bit better, what keeps some people from taking the plunge. Why some of the, seemingly, most interested people ultimately leave the gym without joining. Prepare for one of those... "ooooohhhhh..." moments.
This might be one of my favorite chats yet.
Steven Hall, head honcho of Hophead Events, joins me on the show for a great chat. It's always nice to have that like-minded discussion, right?
In This Episode:

Who IS Steven Hall

26.2 Challenge & Hophead Events

South Shore Food & Wine Expo

Risk vs. Reward

Failure

Attitude, positivity, and getting out there.

You can find Steven online: www.facebook.com/thirstygreek www.twitter.com/thirstygreek www.instagram.com/thirstygreek and find Hophead Events at www.HopheadEvents.com
As always, you can find ME at:
www.SoTHISIsFitness.com (NEW SITE IS LIVE!!!) www.facebook.com/sothisisfitness www.twitter.com/snuffydx www.instagram.com/snuffydx Please do consider leaving a rating and review on iTunes!

#19 - 2017, Goalsetting, & Getting Uncomfortable

If you're going to get somewhere...you have to know how to get there. In order to know HOW to get there... don't you first have to know WHERE it actually is you're going?

Welcome to the reason why New Year's (fitness) resolutions fail - all this ambition backed by no goal and no plan.

Sometimes you figure it out. Sometimes you can push. You keep achieving your goals as they get progressively harder. Eventually...the next logical goal makes you REALLY uncomfortable...

Well gee...guess we just have to figure that out, eh? Don't worry...it's not as bad as it sounds :)

So in this episode we talk about:

- Risk & reward

- Where my journey has been and where I'm about to take it...MY 2017 goals

- How exactly to go about goal setting

- How to know the difference between what's safe, what's a challenge, and what's unreasonable or even unsafe

- Gameplan… For me AND you.

You can't GET there if you don't know where you're going or how to get there. Be smart, think about it, and you can plan for some MAJOR successes this year. Key is...gotta be smart.

And just like my own goals for 2017...sometimes the goals we set for ourselves make us a little uncomfortable. Or a LOT uncomfortable...It's important to remember that at a certain point...it's both good and important to get out of your comfort zone, push it, and find a thing to do that you didn't think you could do...and DO it!

Please do reach out with questions, comments, or to share YOUR goals for some extra accountability - darrell@sothisisfitness.com

Find us online!

www.SoTHISIsFitness.com

www.Facebook.com/SoTHISIsFitness

www.instagram.com/snuffydx

www.twitter.com/snuffydx

And big thanks to Anytime Fitness Pembroke for sponsoring my big races this season! #16 - Millinocket and The Golden Road

Often times, in life, we think we know what we're in for...only to find out we didn't really get it. #13 - Beer + Fitness = Love

It's one of the weirdest team-ups out there...but for some reason beer (well, alcohol in general) and fitness seem to go together just like peanut butter & jelly.

I, for one, enjoy a good brew every now and then...as does every other Average Joe out there. But there are some questions we should probably be asking before we start chugging away, don't you think?

With that under consideration...I ventured back to the Foolproof Brewery to talk to the President of the company - Nick - about all things beer.

In This Episode:

- Foolproof Brewing Company - where it came from & why it's so awesome

- What's really IN that beer, and how do flavors happen?

- What's up with the lack of "Nutrition Facts" labels...and what would be ON them?

- Why do Beer & Fitness go together so well?

- What are the real benefits and negative effects? #12 - Welcome Back, Dingbat

Every once in a while the universe has to remind us that yes, we do in fact live in the real world. There are rules you play by, things you do and do not do. Even if you can achieve something as incredible as a 100 mile endurance run finish...a half-marathon can still take you down under the right circumstances (i.e. if you’re being stupid). Simple rules do still apply - they are, after all, RULES.

Now that Darrell has come out the other side of his big 100 miler goal...it’s time to figure out what happens next.
Things don't always go according to plan...when the ceiling comes crashing down on you, it can be tough to find the drive to keep on plowing forward and sticking to the plan. When conditions are less than ideal, it's up to us to hunker down, toughen up, and make up the difference from within ourselves. #8 - The Struggle Is Real

Fitness is hard. Life is hard. Why does everything have to be so hard? Often we want to shed the stuff that’s harder than we feel like it has to be. And often, the thing that’s easiest to shed...is health and fitness. The gym membership. The running. The whatever. We make things harder than they have to be. We give in.

That struggle is what keeps us from achieving the greatness we’re all capable of, and it’s up to us to find a way to break through. Darrell talks about his own struggle, how this stuff happens, and what, ultimately, it’s gonna come down to to bust out and make it happen.

Send your feedback and questions to Darrell@SoTHISIsFitness.com

Find us online - www.SoTHISIsFitness.com

“Like” the FB page - www.Facebook.com/SoTHISIsFitness

#7 - You Can Lead A Horse To Water...

Even if you’re a fitness fanatic, or had that epiphany and “found fitness”...it can be tough to get those you care about to have that same kind of “awakening”. It can be frustrating, saddening, and even cause a little anger and resentment when friends and loved ones just refuse to do something you KNOW will be beneficial for them, and that they might even enjoy! So how do you get those YOU care about to the same place? You might not like the answer…

Find Darrell & So THIS Is Fitness online!

http://www.SoTHISIsFitness.com

http://www.facebook.com/SoTHISIsFitness

http://www.instagram.com/SnuffyDX

Send your comments, questions, & feedback to Darrell@SoTHISIsFitness.com

#6 - #BleedPurple

All too often people find themselves in an unfulfilling cycle. Get up, go to work, stare at the clock, go home...with no sense of purpose, no sense of pride, and maybe no sense of your impact on the world at large.

I, and many like me, spend our days differently. We wake up high on life, swipe a keyfob at the door, and walk into a world where we can help people make lasting, positive change in their lives.

Today I want to talk about where I work, what I do, and why, no matter how hard some days might be... I love it every damn day. Today you find out what it means to #BleedPurple.
