Gary Michelson is on the show....

Dr. Gary Michelson is a board certified orthopedic spinal surgeon, inventor of more than 990 patents throughout the world, the founder and funder of three private foundations, recipient of numerous awards, and among a small group of individuals to ever be inducted into both the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Inventors.
SOCIAL LINKS (twitter, facebook, linkedin) if applicable:
Michelson Medical Foundation:

www.twitter.com/MichelsonMedRF
www.facebook.com/michelsonmedical
www.instagram.com/garymichelsonmmrf

20MM Foundation:
www.twitter.com/michelson20mm
www.facebook.com/Michelson20MM
www.instagram.com/michelsonimpact

Found Animals Foundation:
www.twitter.com/FoundAnimalsOrg
www.facebook.com/foundanimals
www.instagram.com/foundanimals
Dr. Gary Michelson is a board-certified orthopedic spinal surgeon and a Diplomat of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, as well as an inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist and humane advocate. As a child, Dr. Michelson was always coloring outside the lines, infinitely curious about how things worked, and uncommonly sensitive to the needs of others. Raised by his mother and grandmother in Philadelphia, he was exposed to spinal disorders at a young age—his grandmother suffered from Syringomyelia, a debilitating spinal deformity. The disruption of the nervous system caused by this disease allowed his grandmother’s hand, resting on a hot stove, to catch fire without her noticing. Witnessing this was a pivotal event in Dr. Michelson’s young life, where he began formulating a plan to help people afflicted with similar infirmities.

Despite his modest upbringing, Dr. Michelson worked his way through Temple University and medical school at Drexel University, and following a successful surgical fellowship at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, entered private practice in California as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spinal surgery. Over the next 25 years, he became world-renowned as a surgical innovator and the most prolific inventor in medical history, with over 990 patents worldwide issued to date.

In the field of spinal surgery, where outcomes were unpredictable and recovery could be long and painful, Dr. Michelson’s revolutionary advancements in procedures, instruments and implants consistently led to better patient outcomes, and significantly reduced post-surgical pain, blood loss, complications and recovery time. The surgical techniques and materials developed by Dr. Michelson remain the industry standard around the world.

In 2005, after selling his patents to Medtronic, the world’s largest medical device company, those proceeds, together with the resolution of related intellectual property litigation, earned Dr. Michelson a place on the Forbes 400 as a self-made billionaire. The litigation, which established new precedents in the field of patent law, later became a stimulus for Dr. Michelson to create a comprehensive textbook on the subject (The Intangible Advantage: Understanding Intellectual Property in the New Economy), which he released digitally free of charge. Later, he developed an undergraduate college course, The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Intellectual Property, which has been adopted by many colleges and universities throughout the country.

This inspired Dr. Michelson to create the Michelson 20MM Foundation (formerly, Twenty Million Minds Foundation), funding the dissemination of free, peer-reviewed, openly-licensed digital textbooks for essential college general education courses. These textbooks, now in use in half of all U.S. colleges and universities, and more than 70 countries, have already saved students hundreds of millions of dollars. Among its related initiatives, 20MM also provides digital textbooks for the remedial education of individuals serving time in prison.

After retiring from private practice, Dr. Michelson’s passion pivoted exclusively to philanthropy, advancing his philosophy that sharing knowledge and supporting the research of others can change the world. That same year, he made an introductory donation of $100 million to his private Michelson Medical Research Foundation (which does not accept outside donations). Among the Foundation’s other activities, the Michelson Neglected Disease Vaccine Initiative supports research for obscure and lesser-known diseases that are deemed too esoteric for conventional funding, but nonetheless affect billions of people, particularly in poorer countries throughout the world.

As a medical student, Dr. Michelson was nearly expelled over his objection to removing healthy organs from living dogs in a surgical lab. His lifelong passion for animals led to a new philanthropic endeavor, the Found Animals Foundation. This Los Angeles-based animal welfare organization provides grants for the rescue and placement of shelter animals, operates adopt-and-shop centers for homeless pets, provides free microchips, subsidizes stationary and mobile low and no-cost spay/neuter clinics, and funds the $25 million Michelson Grant for the development of non-surgical sterilization for cats and dogs. Through its various programs and services, Found Animals Foundation has assisted over 1.5 million companion animals over the past 14 years.

In 2014, Dr. Michelson and his wife Alya personally gifted $50 million to the University of Southern California to fund the creation of the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, bringing together the best and brightest of scientists, researchers and engineers from around the world to work collaboratively on solutions to the most pressing public health issues of our time. This unique interdisciplinary research site aspires to become a model for other prominent research universities, bringing the world closer to the medical breakthroughs that will define the 21st century.

Among his many awards, citations and accomplishments, Dr. Michelson is one of a handful of individuals to ever be inducted into both the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Inventors. In 2006, he was recognized as the world’s leading scientist of spinal research by the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Among a group of prominent inventors who supported the America Invents Act of 2011, Dr. Michelson was invited to the White House by President Obama to witness the signing of that historic legislation. In 2015, he was awarded both the Albert B. Sabin Humanitarian Award for his contributions toward neglected disease vaccine research, and the Distinguished Achievement Award from B’nai B’rith International for his leadership, philanthropy and humanitarian endeavors. He also received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (alongside Will Ferrel and Dame Helen Mirren), at USC’s 134th Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2017.

Dr. Michelson lives in California with his wife Alya, their three children, and their two rescued dogs. They are active members of the Giving Pledge, a campaign founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, that encourages the wealthiest individuals and couples to contribute the majority of their fortune to philanthropic causes.
1-2 Topics Talking Points * conversation topics you want us to discuss that are important to you.:
Topics: Philanthropy and the Michelson Foundations (all three are self-funded by Gary):
-Michelson Medical Foundation
-20MM Foundation
-Found Animals Foundation

Sample questions
-could you give us some specific examples of what each of the foundations do, and how it might directly affect our lives?
-your 20MM Foundation funds high quality, interactive, open license, freely downloadable and printable, textbooks to support higher education, and in particular the college space. Craig Hall, New York Times Best Selling Author. Founder & Chairman of HALL Group, Self-Made Billionaire is on the Positive Phil Show
Craig Hall is an entrepreneur, New York Times bestselling author, vintner and philanthropist. He formed HALL Group in 1968 at age 18 with $4,000 saved from small ventures that began at age 10. Today, HALL Group’s diversified business interests include active operations in commercial real estate ownership, development and management, structured financial lending, winemaking and early- stage investments in promising startups.

Now, a self-made billionaire and author -Boom: Bridging the Opportunity Gap to Reignite Startups

www.reignitestartups.com

Hall actively supports new entrepreneurs, nurtures young startups and often speaks publicly about the importance of encouraging entrepreneurship worldwide. Together with his wife Kathryn Hall, he funded the Fulbright – Kathryn and Craig Hall Distinguished Chair for Entrepreneurship to teach entrepreneurship in Eastern Europe. Hall also founded the Dallas Regional Office of NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship). He is the author of seven published books, including his most recent, BOOM: Bridging the Opportunity Gap to Reignite Startups, which was published on May 14, 2019.

Hall has made it a lifelong mission to put people first – those in the community, those whom he employs, and those whom his business affects. Hall strongly believes that entrepreneurship is a catalyst that makes a difference both today and in the future, and intends to leave the world better than he found it. This is a philosophy he has been putting into action for 50 years, both in business and through his family foundation, established in 1977.

Hall and his companies are often recognized for significant achievements and civic and charitable contributions. In 2006, Hall received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mortgage Bankers Association. In 2007, Hall was named a lifetime member of the prestigious Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished Americans and was inducted into the North Texas Commercial Real Estate Hall of Fame and the Entrepreneurs Foundation of North Texas’ Ring of Honor. He was named the 2013 Dallas Real Estate Executive of the Year and in 2016 he was inducted into the Junior Achievement of Dallas Business Hall of Fame. In 2017, Hall and his wife Kathryn were co-awarded the 2017 “Master Entrepreneur of the Year” award for the Southwest Region from the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year program. In 2019, Hall was received the Pioneer Award from D CEO magazine for his contribution to the Dallas real estate community, and in the same year he also was recognized with the Business Council for the Arts Obelisk Award for his partnership with and service to the arts community.

Hall has served on the Board of Trustees of the American University in Bulgaria, the American-Austrian Fulbright Board and the Board of the Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished Americans.

From the perspective of a seasoned entrepreneur with experience in diverse industries—from software, to real estate, to winemaking—Hall provides his expert evaluation on the challenges facing entrepreneurs today. After careful analysis defining the current environment for startups, Hall optimistically concludes with specific strategies for go-getters to successfully bridge the opportunity gap. We can, and must, reverse these trends in order to level the playing field for entrepreneurs to safeguard the future of the American Dream.

* Declining entrepreneurship: What does it mean for the future of work and our economy and how can we solve this crisis?
* The Millennial problem: What challenges does this generation face and how can we lift the burden for millennials so that they pursue startups?
* Women and minority-led startups: How can we provide more opportunity for women and minority-led startups and increase their visibility?
* Democratizing entrepreneurship: What is the role of policymakers in the future of work and how can we begin to inspire change on a local and national level?
* Corporate Darwinism: How are technology and AI influencing the future and why Main Street— and even Big Box—survival depends on flexibility, risk and innovation?
Hope and opportunity are the currency of a growing middle class and the foundation of the American dream. Entrepreneurship can help cultivate this. And yet, as our economy and society have drifted into a greater divide between haves and have nots, we have seen our middle class shrink. We have seen our politics become divisive as we look for easy answers and all go to our own corners and reinforce our own views.
The truth is, there is no silver bullet that will eliminate America’s income divide and its implications. But a broader base of entrepreneurs and an increase in opportunities for people of all ethnicities, races and genders to become entrepreneurs and start businesses would be a huge step in the right direction.

Living a Life to Help Others is a Great Way to Live. Ray Zinn,Angel Investor,Author,Entrepreneur,Inventor and so Much More is on the Show
Raymond D. “Ray” Zinn is an inventor, entrepreneur, investor, angel, bestselling author and the longest serving CEO of a publicly traded company in Silicon Valley. He is also the founder of a nationally launched ZinnStarter program at colleges around the country, providing the financial and mentoring support for students to launch new products and companies. In 2015, Ray published his first book, Tough Things First, with McGraw Hill. The book covers Zinn’s analysis of his nearly 40 years at the helm of Micrel, a Silicon Valley institution along with the critical factors that entrepreneurs and seasoned executives alike need to know, including the intricacies of nurturing corporate culture, how to make every employee (and every human) feel valued, the impact and limitations of policies and procedures, and how to manage growth.

Zinn is also known for conceptualizing and in effect inventing the Wafer Stepper, and for cofounding semiconductor company Micrel (acquired by Microchip in 2015), which provides essential components for smartphones, consumer electronics and enterprise networks. He served as Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of its Board of Directors and President since the
Company’s inception in 1978.

Zinn led Micrel profitably through eight major downturns in global chip markets, an impressive
achievement. Many chip companies weren’t able to make it through one downturn and very few have survived through all the major downturns. Micrel has been profitable from its very first year, aside from one year during the dot-com implosion.

Ray Zinn holds over 20 patents for semiconductor design. He has been mentioned in several books, including Jim Fixx’s The Complete Book of Running and Essentialism by Greg McKeown.

SOCIAL LINKS (twitter, facebook, linkedin) if applicable:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/rayzinn/
https://www.facebook.com/rayzinnentrepreneur/
https://twitter.com/Ray_Zinn_
Additional links you want us to reference: (news articles, latest press release):
http://toughthingsfirst.com/blog/

The Positive Phil Podcast Show, a podcast, available on iTunes, Spotify, iHeartRadio, where Positive Phil talks about personal stories, events and engaging interviews; with famous people, celebrities, athletes, authors, spiritual educators, thought leaders, as well as others in the social, business and entertainment industry.

Airing on over 300 digital channels, including iHeart Radio, Spotify, StitcherFm, Google Podcast and published online via RSS feeds globally.

The show has been around for almost 4 years and is one of the most popular podcast shows on the internet in the business-motivation space.

Professional radio, tv, podcast host and producer from San Diego California. We have a large national following on digital media channels, with our popular podcast and network of shows. I can and I will.Sold last company for $650M, Chad Sahley, Founder of Social BlueBook is on the Positive Phil Podcast
Like some of the greats in the industry Chad started his company out of his garage with a single editing system. Over the next ten years he built that company into Hieroglyphic Productions, which became one of Disney’s largest vendors producing branded content for shows like Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place and Take Two with Phineas & Ferb. He also directed many A-list celebrities including Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Ben Stiller, Muhammad Ali, and Michael J. Fox.
In 2007 he became one of the early adopters on YouTube, launching an original show that quickly became one of the top comedy channels. He loved this new space for many reasons, but mostly because it leveled the playing field for people who simply wanted to create content without playing the “Hollywood” game. YouTube was also the place where he became fast friends with some of the top creators out there.
In 2012, Hieroglyphic Productions was acquired by Maker Studios where Chad served as Vice President of Production, helping to build the company before it was sold two years later to Disney for $650 Million.
After leaving Maker, Chad could see there was a better way to gauge (and share) the true value of his fellow creators. So in 2014 Chad founded Social Bluebook, a company devoted to helping social media creators build their business and brand value.
Positive Phil Podcast is a daily podcast hosted by Positive Phil.

Our popular growing podcast currently airs on iTunes, TuneIn, Stitcher, Spreaker, Soundcloud, on our official website, RSS feeds globally, and many more digital platforms!

If you are looking for another way to stay motivated in life, be sure to subscribe to our episodes.

www.positivephil.com

Life is fragile. We’re not guaranteed a tomorrow so give it everything you’ve got.Bill Masters invented the Kayak & 3D Printing, Part 1
William Masters is an engineer, inventor, designer, manufacturing entrepreneur and business advisor/mentor. He holds the first 3D printing patent.,[1] along with patents for other 3D printing technologies (piezo transducer, extrusion, lithography, surface tension, and pin array) and computer assisted manufacturing. He founded Perception Kayaks,[2] at one time the largest kayak manufacturer in the U.S.,[3][4] and has served as a small business delegate to the Reagan and Clinton administrations.[5]

Masters is widely recognized as a pioneer in kayak manufacturing[6] and for his success in connecting whitewater enthusiasts with his kayaks.[7][8] The Wall Street Journal, in the August 15, 1998 edition of its Southeastern Journal, described Masters as "an intense, hands-on tinkerer who isn't shy about touting his accomplishments."[9] His innovations in kayak manufacturing, including rotational molding and working in engineered plastics instead of fiberglass, revolutionized the sport and recreational kayak markets.[7]
In the mid 1970s, Masters began work on a revolutionary manufacturing process, one which he compared to using a straw to deposit "spit wads." "When you shoot a lot of wads," he explained, "they begin to take shape. If you can control the direction of the wads and the motion of the device shooting them, you can produce any desired shape."[10]

Masters filed a patent for his Computer Automated Manufacturing Process and System on July 2, 1984 (US 4665492)).[11] This filing is on record at the USPTO as the first 3D printing patent in history; it was the first of three patents belonging to Masters that laid the foundation for the 3D printing systems used today.[12][13]

Masters introduced his 3D printing technology at CAD/CAM conferences in the late 1980s[12] with little success. Undeterred, he founded Perception Systems to handle research and development of his technology. In 1992, Perception Systems changed its name to Ballistic Particle Manufacturing (BPM)[14] and received funding from Palmetto Seed Capital, a state funded South Carolina venture capital group by headed by former South Carolina Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr..[15]

BPM launched its Personal Modeler 2100 in 1996, a device that used a computer aided design (CAD) system to manufacture an object of any shape by "shooting droplets of plastic."[16] During this time, Masters was forced to part ways with BPM to focus on his growing kayak business.[4]

The company, responding to pressure from investors and competitors, shipped and installed sixteen Personal Modelers in beta to customers and distributors. After eight years of product development, the technology was still unreliable, and most of the companies who received the Personal Modelers shipped them back and turned their attention elsewhere.

Negative publicity resulting from the product introduction proved to be fatal, which had struggled to develop its market. BPM would go out of business in 1997,[15] but the corporate entity still exists.

Two other American inventors developed 3D printing technology that achieved commercial viability in additive manufacturing: Charles W. Hull, who invented stereo lithography (filed Aug 8, 1984), and S. Scott Crump, who patented fused deposition modeling (filed Oct 30, 1989). Both of these men filed their patent applications after Bill Masters (filed Jul 2, 1984), making him the true father of 3D printing.

Masters's original 3D printing patent expired in 2004.

Perception Kayaks
As a student at Clemson University, Masters received a broken kayak as payment for fixing a friend's car. He repaired the kayak and his workmanship attracted the attention of other kayakers, who quickly asked him to repair their kayaks.[17]

A whitewater enthusiast from the first time he went down the Chattooga River, Masters launched his business with $50 in capital.[6] Over the course of ten days in 1972, he completed his first handmade kayak in the back of an old mortuary. The one-off drew interest from other river runners and Masters sold it for $90.[18]

In August 1974, Masters launched a new kayak manufacturing company, Fiberglass Technology, in Liberty, South Carolina. The company produced an average of 150 boats per year.[19]

In 1976, Masters changed the name of the company to Perception Kayaks. Within five years, this operation would become the largest kayak manufacturer in the United States.[20] As Perception grew with the kayak market, it expanded operations internationally to Chester, England in 1982 and New Zealand in 1986. Masters developed and registered 30+ patents in boat design, plastics manufacturing, computers and heat transfer and used these patents to keep Perception at the forefront of the industry.[21]

He realized early on that customer interaction would drive sales growth. During the 1990s, Perception introduced various ways to interact with prospects and customers, including a professional call center, an interactive website, and two technical field representatives to promote the sport of kayaking through education.[22]

This early pilot program introduced kayaking to novices by offering free coaching. As Masters noted, "Coaching from a skilled trainer, and the opportunity to try any of 30 kayak designs, helps people push past their doubts and get out onto the water, paddling closer to a future kayak purchase.”[23]

Perception continued to grow throughout the 80s and into the 90s, producing successful lines of kayaks and canoes. As early as 1984, however, Masters had begun to speak openly about vacating his role as President of the company he founded.[24]

In 1987, Perception's sales manager, Joe Pulliam, left the company to work for Blue Hole Canoe and eventually founded Dagger Canoe. Dagger emerged as the first serious competition for Perception, although Pulliam had a two-year non-compete agreement that initially kept Dagger out of kayaks and in canoes. In 1990 Dagger introduced its first kayak, the Response.

Masters would eventually exit Perception altogether when he sold the company to Crescent Capital, which then acquired Dagger, and both companies were put under the Watermark Paddlesports holding company. Watermark was eventually acquired by Confluence Holdings, an industry platform consolidating multiple kayak and canoe brands.[9]

In 2017, Masters was inducted into the International Whitewater Hall of Fame in the Pioneer Category. The ceremony was hosted in October, 2017 alongside the ACA National Paddlesports Conference in Bryson City, North Carolina, USA.

Peer Advisory Groups (aka Forums)
Bill Masters is a firm believer in educating, the development of entrepreneurial skills, and mentoring, especially young entrepreneurs.[25] He gives back by dedicating his time to numerous committees and boards, including Greenville Technical College Entrepreneurial Forum and writing a book to create and advocate for peer to peer advisory groups, Focus Forums™. He has recently served as Chair of South Carolina Research Authority, on the SC Council on Competitiveness Composites Cluster (2006), Liberty Fellows (2005), Board of Directors for SC Launch (2005), Furman University Foundation Board (2004) and Chair, Higher Education Task Force of The Governors Map Commission. Masters is a member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO), World Presidents Organization (WPO) and L3. He served on the YPO International Forum Advisory Board (YPO) and Chapter Forum Officer WPO.

Bill Masters: An Entrepreneur who Turned Spitballs into 3D Printing

The Ups and Downs of Creating a Major Invention and Knowing What to Do with It
When you think of 3D printing, images of space-age shapes and maybe even a guy named Chuck Hull probably get conjured up. Hull: the man widely dubbed as ‘the father of 3D printing.’ It’s true Hull – now 75 and still working as chief technology officer of 3D Systems – did patent a 3D invention in 1986. But, little do people know that two years earlier in the heat and humidity of Greenville, SC, the idea had already been born. By entrepreneur, Bill Masters.

Masters grew up in Easley, South Carolina and through himself into science and engineering as a kid. This passion followed him to college, where he studied electrical engineering while working a 40-hour week on the side. Today, he still resides (and invents!) in South Carolina, but is instead widely known as the father of modern kayaking – founding and running Perception Kayaks from 1975 to 1998. In fact, he has recently been inducted to the International Whitewater Hall of Fame in the Pioneer category for his efforts. It was on the banks of a kayaking trip – the Chattooga River under the 76 bridge on the South Carolina side to be exact – Masters began thinking about spit balls that eventually led him to 3D printing.

“I was sleeping on the side of the the river on my kayak looking up at the stars and I realized if you could take one star and make that your seed point, you could add stars from any direction until you had the shape you wanted,” he remembers of the time. “Similarly, if you shoot a spit ball down and it sticks, you can then shoot multiple down on top of it. They stick and stick and stick until eventually you can build something with them.”

This was in the 1970s, and it took him a few years to develop the idea and save enough to afford the patent. VALUES BASED LEADERSHIP: How a True Leader Puts People, Organization, and Community First.

Today, on the show we have JEFF THOMPSON, MD, who is an executive advisor and chief executive officer emeritus at Gundersen Health System, pediatrician, author, and speaker on values-based leadership.

Jeff’s experience in leadership is far-reaching, having led diverse teams, projects, and divisions, before holding multiple senior executive roles, including fourteen years as a CEO responsible for a staff of seven thousand, hundreds of thousands of patients, and a billion dollars of the community’s money within the Gundersen Health System. His long experience as intensive care pediatrician and senior executive has shown him over and over again how leading from one’s values has the power to affect long-term meaningful change.

During Dr. Thompson’s tenure, Gundersen Health System has been recognized across the country by independent healthcare ratings organizations for high-quality patient care. It has also earned the highest honors of Healthgrades America’s 50 Best AwardTM for 2012 through 2016 and the White House Champions of Change award in 2013.

Dr. Thompson is a founding member and past board chair of the Wisconsin Collaborative for Healthcare Quality and the La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium. He also serves on boards for the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value, the Wisconsin Statewide Value Committee, About Health (chair), and Practice Greenhealth.

Dr. Thompson has authored and been featured in many articles, book chapters and abstracts on healthcare, leadership and sustainability topics. He is the author of Lead True: Live Your Values, Build Your People, Inspire Your Community, (Forbes Books, March 2017).

Dr. Thompson is board certified in Pediatric Critical Care, Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine, and Pediatrics. He has been caring for patients for over thirty-five years. He earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

He resides in La Crosse, Wisconsin with his wife and in near proximity to his three grown children.

Gundersen Health System
Gundersen Health System is a non-profit, comprehensive, and integrated healthcare network headquartered in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Gundersen employs over 6,000 people, serves 19 counties in western Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota, and northeastern Iowa. This extensive and advanced medical network boasts one of the nation’s largest multi-specialty group medical practices, teaching hospital, regional community clinics, behavioral health services, vision centers, and air and ground ambulances, as well as many other services available for patients’ convenience and health. In 2015, Gundersen received Healthgrade America’s 50 Best AwardTM. Consistently ranked in the top five percent of hospitals in the country for clinical quality care by independent healthcare ratings organizations, Gundersen relentlessly pursues improved health for patients, their families, and the communities it serves.

VALUES BASED LEADERSHIP
How a True Leader Puts People, Organization, and Community First
We all face countless decisions throughout our careers. The specific circumstances that call us to lead will be different, but the core dilemmas and ethical challenges are very similar. Faced with these challenges, each of us must decide if we will follow our ego-centered inclinations or lead for the good of everyone whose lives we touch? Will we endanger or impair those around us to satisfy our own self-interest, or will we lead in a manner that is true to our values?

In his inspiring book Lead True, Jeff Thompson, MD, has masterfully compiled stories from the business, healthcare, and education fields, illustrating how a diverse group of leaders has employed value-based leadership and succeeded. These case studies offer dynamic, living narratives that demonstrate ways in which a leader, fueled by personal values, can change people, organizations, and even entire industries.

What sets this book apart is the interweaving of the author’s personal leadership story in healthcare to the insights from start-ups, mid-career, and top-level leaders—people who have proven that values-driven leadership is not simply a noble idea but one that actually works in practice. The author artfully shows that the goal of leadership is not to move one individual ahead of all others. When you lead true, you can move everyone forward—people, organizations, and communities—finding the best route for all.

The Positive Phil Show is a daily podcast hosted by Positive Phil.

www.positivephil.com

The program primarily consists of interviews with positive people and thought leaders, as well as others in the social, business and entertainment community.

We are a community of over 1,550,000 people who seek to create positive and lasting change. Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power. NFL Veteran Tafa Jefferson is on this Positive Phil Show
Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power. www.positivephil.com

In 1997, Tafa Jefferson was an undrafted free agent in the NFL signed with the Chicago Bears. He played only one year due to career-ending injuries. Jefferson used the competition he learned on the field and is now founder and CEO of a franchise system that has grown to more than 100 locations in 34 states in the U.S.

In 2007, Jefferson launched Amada Senior Care, which provides both in-home care and assisted living options to the ever-growing senior population. As a franchisor, Amada offers non-medical in-home care franchises as a business opportunity for those interested in purchasing a franchise. He launched the business with his co-founder, Chad Fotheringham, after his mother, who worked in the senior care field, suggested Jefferson consider opening a business assisting seniors.

RAPID FRANCHISE GROWTH RATE
The growth of Amada and the number of franchises it has partnered with is remarkable. Statistically, only one out of five startup franchises reach 100+ locations after more than eight years of franchising—meaning that Amada hit the 100th location mark after 11 years in business but in only six years of franchising,

Jefferson attributes this success to his approach to business as a “corporate athlete.” The franchise also offers key differentiators, such as Amada’s proprietary technology that allows loved ones to monitor tasks completed on a daily basis, and streamlines the claims process when dealing with various insurance providers.

With the caregiver category being the fastest growing job in America (second only to Certified Nursing Assistant), coupled with the instability of health care, the government pulling back on reimbursements and hospitals being penalized for patient recidivism, Jefferson sees the success of Amada exploding over the next five to 10 years.

Jefferson also has a focus on bringing more women and minorities into Amada ownership. He feels the owner network would benefit greatly from being more diverse. The senior care business is rated in the top five most profitable franchise sectors, and annual expenditures for home care top the $70 billion mark.

Yet, for Jefferson, it’s not just about the money. For him, senior care is about community. Taking care of the elderly, assisting families in their time of need, and delivering jobs to African American communities, “right in our own backyards.”

As for what’s next for Amada Senior Care, on May 30, Amada announced closing a deal to become sponsor and exclusive in-home care provider for the NFL Alumni, an association of about 5,000 former National Football League players, coaches, staffers, cheerleaders, and family members.

Jefferson’s advice for business owners considering franchising their business:

Don’t do it for the money! While collecting franchise fees and royalties seems like a gold mine, it takes a lot of resources to run a successful franchise network that is growing and thriving.

Live your passion and purpose, and the money will come (he admitted this sounds cliche, but he would do this for free).

Continue to see yourself as a small business owner and always do what’s right for your employees, clients, and franchise partners

Be ready for that mental transition from working IN the business to working ON the business. Leverage tools such as dashboards, spreadsheets, KPIs, etc.

Positive Phil Podcast is a daily podcast hosted by Positive Phil.

Our popular growing podcast currently airs on iTunes, TuneIn, Stitcher, Spreaker, Soundcloud, on our official website, RSS feeds globally, and many more digital platforms!
https://positivephil.com/listen/

If you are looking for another way to stay motivated in life, be sure to subscribe to our episodes.

www.positivephil.com
www.positivephil.com/about
www.positivestocks.com
www.podcastconnector.com
www.positivethis.com

www.positivephil.com/subscribe

Itunes:
https://itunes.apple.com/sb/podcast/positive-phil-show/id1107492702?mt=2
Stitcher Radio: http://bit.ly/2c9czHF

Google Play: https://bit.ly/2dPZzUW

He is also a board member of the Carbon War Room, the global organization founded by Sir Richard Branson and Virgin United to help entrepreneurs address climate change.
