41 | Helping A Listener Understand What Their Cholesterol Numbers Mean
On today's podcast episode, we'll help a podcast listener understand what their cholesterol numbers mean. We were given permission from Jon, a member of Belly Burnin' Nation, to cover his lipid panels and cholesterol results on the podcast. Since we mostly advocate a higher fat type of diet, the most common question we receive is about cholesterol. Get ready for more geekin' out and nerdin' out about cholesterol. Here are our recommendations to Jon so he can optimize his cholesterol levels for optimum performance: ---  Total cholesterol of 186. We recommend increasing it to over 200 for ultimate mind, body and hormone health. ---  LDL cholesterol of 120. We have no concerns, but would recommend a deeper inflammation test and LDL particle size test. ---  HDL cholesterol of 50. We recommend increasing it as much as possible and taking a deeper look at the HDL particle size. ---  Triglycerides of 78. This is pretty good for being a craft beer drinker. ---  Glucose of 77. This is pretty good when you have LDL and total cholesterol slightly elevated. ---  Triglycerides to HDL ratio 1.56. As long as you keep it below 2.0 all is good. ---  HDL to total cholesterol ratio 27%. As long as you keep it above 24% all is good. ---  Total cholesterol to HDL ratio 3.72. Here are a few of the questions we answer on the podcast: ---  I injured my leg a few months ago and basically quit exercising, I also quit eating healthy. Now I'm 25 to 30lbs over my ideal weight. I'm healed now and would like to drop this body fat as fast as possible, any suggestion you can give me other than eat good food and exercise? --- I don't care about any of the science or why certain foods are better for you than others, I just want to know what to eat to lose some weight. Please tell me specifically what to eat over the course of a day - breakfast, lunch, dinner - to best lose weight. ---  I can't kick my sweet tooth. How do I defeat my sugar cravings? ---  I don't like the taste of MCT oil in my coffee, can I just add MCT oil to other drinks that mask the taste? I've found it to be more tolerable in orange juice. ---  Just found out my blood pressure is up even though I'm still on blood pressure meds that I've been trying to kick. Going to increase my magnesium supplements and add potassium gluconate and/or potassium citrate. Might need to cut back on the quality craft beer. Any other suggestions? I'm sure I could eat more veggies, but other than beer, I've been off the sugar, grains and processed foods. I've also seen some conflicting info on creatine possibly raising blood pressure due to increased water retention, any thoughts on that? Here are the questions provided by listener, Kabir: ---  Are saturated fats really healthy? Like whole milk cheese (cheddar), animal fats etc? ---  If blood sugar drops below the normal, isn't it that the muscle glucose gets released and chance of muscle reducing get enhanced? ( glycogen..) ---  Coffee, Grain fed butter, MCT – I am having oatmeal everyday. Is the coffee healthier ? I am still In doubt…I want to preserve at least how much muscle mass I do have …also in India, we get enough 'oil' ( though not the good kind), in the food…every food is cooked with oil. ---  I am mixing GOOD WHOLE CARBS currently with my 'diet' which I have invented. This new diet is nuts in the morning with oatmeal, then celery juice with spirulina. AT 1 PM- I have green veggies with other vegetables like beans . At 4pm- I have yogurt full fat with protein shake with one fruit. At 5:30 I have GRAM FLOUR ( channa). After exercise , I have another protein shake with banana. For dinner, again veggies. Before sleeping, again protein shake. Is this a good routine? ---  I am not able to go FULL FAT, LOW CARB..( though I have cut out on the junk carbs..and candies, chocolates and all that crap..) is this good enough? Or I need to go on like a Dr.Rochdale type of diet..VERY HIGH FAT, VERY LOW CARB.. "let your body get energy from fats not carbs " theory? ---  Is MCT oil better or Brain Octane Oil?
