EP126: God Rest Ye Merry Laymen

We have been going strong for two and half years and now it is time to take a little break. This will be our last show of the year. The guys have earned some time off with their families. This year has been a tough one, but a very rewarding one. The show has grown in ways we've never expected it to, we have built a network with truly amazing brothers, and we have learned a lot, but, it's time to take a break.

On this show, we are joined by our Pastor, friend, and co-host of the Front Pew, Chris Griggs. He gave us a lot of encouragement and maybe a little pastorly guidance. He introduced our listeners to Brother Tony and maybe threw a few shots at some of those health and wealth guys. This is a show you can't miss.

Go and check out the Berean Media Network. It consists of The Front Pew, The Two Thieves, and The Rebel Alliance. Berean Media Network, where you will hear sound theology.

We talk all the time about our conversations backstage. For the first time, we are making those conversations available to you. For just a dollar a month, you can hear what goes on, and hear us go off the cuff. Visit us at Patreon.com/laymenscup

Thank you for listening. If you are listening on iTunes, please subscribe and leave a review. If you have comments or questions for us, you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com. We also have videos you can view here on our website or on Youtube. We are on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laymenscup. You can also follow us on Instagram and Twitter @laymenscup.

It is always our hope to get the Gospel out to as many people as possible and you can help us by sharing the show. Word of mouth is the greatest way we will get the show out to the masses. Thank you.

Please pray for us, as we are praying for you.

Kemp, Wes, Shaun, and Bob

EP124: Iron Sharpening Iron

From time to time, we Laymen get pushback from something we said on our show. The past week, this held true. The pushback was from our dear brother in arms, Justin from the Two Thieves. If you haven't listened to the previous week yet, "Kemp's Bakery," go and listen, and then enjoy this show where we walk through disagreements within the brotherhood.

This week we sipped on Black Rifle coffee. It is a company owned by Veterans, and they make great coffee. EP123: Kemp's Bakery

In this show, we ask two questions. One, where are the women? We received an email asking where is the woman's voice concerning theology. In this section, we provide some resources to listen to. We also discuss how one gets into studying theology.

The second question that was asked is concerning the Christian baker. There was a gay couple who asked a Christian baker to make a wedding cake. The Baker told them that it would be a violation of his conscience to do so. The question is, did the baker lose the opportunity to share the Gospel with the couple?

On the show, we drank Crux coffee. It was given to us from a friend.

Go and check out the Berean Media Network. It consists of The Front Pew, The Two Thieves, and The Rebel Alliance.
We had some fun on this show. Last week we discussed Philemon, what did others say about it? Did they agree with us or went in a different direction. EP120: Philemon

Philemon is one of the shortest books in the New Testament, and many ask the question of why it is in the Bible. It is a personal letter that Paul wrote to ask if Philemon would release his slave to Paul. In this show we discuss why it is in the Bible, and what it means for us today.

Go and check out the Berean Media Network. EP118: Reformation Transformation

On this show, we are honored to have a discussion with Dr. Stephen Eccher, a history professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Eccher received his PhD. from the University of St. Andrews, in St. Andrews, Scottland in Reformation Studies. Dr. Eccher teaches church history at the Seminary, and he does it with style with a variety of Jordans.

This month is the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation and we wanted to spend some time asking what does the reformation mean for us today? We ask the question, what does the Reformation have to do with modern Reformed Theology? Most "reformed theologians" hold to several different traditions. Do these traditions come from the Reformation? Do they define "reformed theology?" This was great conversation and very eye-opening.

On the show we had the privilege of drinking Crux Coffee, given to us by our friend Anthony. It is a dark strong coffee. Too Strong for Bob, he needed a lot of cream!

Go and check out the Berean Media Network. It consists of The Front Pew, The Two Thieves, and The Rebel Alliance. EP117: By His GraceO

Grace falls on us all. God's word tells us that grace falls on the just and the unjust. The idea that we get up every day, and live from day to day is known as common grace. God has the right to end sin in the world now, but instead, he gives us grace by allowing sinners to live. Then there is salvific grace. This is the grace of God that saves sinners. In this show we discuss grace, and what God's word says about the subject.

On the show we drank Crux Coffee, giving to us by our friend Anthony. It is a dark strong coffee.

God and check out the Berean Media Network. It consists of The Front Pew, The Two Thieves, and The Rebel Alliance. EP114: From Every Nation, Tribe, and Tongue

The Laymen believe we have the answer to racism. It is simply this, we are all made in the image of God. If we are made in the image of God, then in front of an almighty God, we are all equal. When we view people as bearing the image of God, then we see their value and worth. We also see that every one of us needs the Gospel. The Gospel is the only truth that can heal people.

This week we went back to the Cabbellas Cold brew. This is a local shop in Denver, NC. EP111: #Racetalk Round Table

If you watch, just a few minutes, any news media, you will see that we are divided as a country. What is the cure for this division? First, the cure is the Gospel. That is the only medicine that provides the ultimate cure. What will start it? It's when people come together, and begin to talk to one another. That is what you will hear here, guys on different sides talking and listening to one another.

This week we went back to the Cabbellas Cold brew. This is a local shop in Denver, NC. EP110: Should Christians Support the Monuments?

In this show, we discuss the recent events concerning race in the country. The question raised is: if a monument offends someone, should we tear it down? We also firmly agree, that the Alt-Right has no place in Christianity, and call on those followers to repent. Their views do not represent our Christian beliefs.

This week we went back to the Cabbellas Cold brew. This is a local shop in Denver, NC.
In this week's show, we discuss the situation of Colin Kaepernick in the NFL. Last year he protested for the BLM movement by kneeling during the National Anthem, and now he is without a job. The question raised is, is he being blackballed? Meaning, are the owners purposely keeping him out of the league?

In the second part of the show, we introduced a new segment that seemed to take on a life of its own. We examine a speech from T.D. Jakes, the great bishop. This might be fun.

On the show, we sipped on Death Wish Nitro Brew coffee. This was a cold brew in a can. It is extremely strong but very good. Bob's reaction was worth a listen.

We have doubled in size in the Berean Media Network. EP107: Convo with the Vice President

We had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Walter Strickland II. Dr. Strickland is a professor at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and newly elected Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention. He leads the Kingdom Diversity Initiative at the school, where the goal is to have the school look more like the Kingdom of Heaven. What that means is to be diverse as possible.

The SBC has been in the news recently. At the convention in Phoenix, there was confusion over a motion to take a stand against the Alt-White movement. Dr. Strickland talked to us about what really happened. We also discussed how we can change the image of the SBC and address the issue of diversity to look more like Heaven.

Please go check out his website at http://walterstrickland.com

We have doubled in size in the Berean Media Network. EP106:In the Shadows of Preaching

The guys took a night off to reflect on some recent experiences. Over the last few months, they guys had a chance to walk through preparing and delivering a Sermon. Chris, from the Front Pew, mentored Kemp, Wes, and our buddy Patrick on how to write and preach a sermon. We are guys who truly want to share the Gospel with people, and being able to do it in this capacity is an awesome opportunity.

This week we sipped on some cold brew from Cabellas Coffee Shop. http://cabbellascoffeeshop.com. If you are around Denver, NC, go check them out, if not, definitely go check out their website.

We made a big announcement this week. We have doubled in size on the Berean Media Network. EP105: Kemp vs Shaun, Which Style of Worship Reigns

This week we have two special guests. Bobby is music minister at Church at Denver, and Kerri who is Worship Leader at our own church, Denver Baptist Church. In this show, we discuss what it means to worship God, and ask the question, how does a music minister prepare for Sunday morning? We also ask the question, what style of music should you use during worship, or does it matter at all?

On this show, we got to sip on coffee from the Anchor Coffee Co, out of North Wilkesboro, NC. This week we sent it through a drip machine, it was good and bold. This is the type of coffee we love to drink black. Make sure to check them out at http://anchorcoffeeco.com.

We made a big announcement this week. We have doubled in size on the Berean Media Network. EP104: Living On Mission

As Laymen, we believe that we are to live on mission. That means we are to be intentional in sharing our faith. Whenever we get a chance to meet a missionary doing that same thing day and day out, we love to talk to them. This week, we had a chance to sit down with Sean Mullins, a missionary with Samaria Missions serving in South Africa. It was a great privilege to hear how he is bringing the Gospel and building Churches.

If you want to get a hold of Sean, you can email him at sean@samrianmission.co.za.
On this show, we finish our series on the 10 Commandments by wrapping up the 9th and 10th Commandments. In these Commandments, we are told to not bear false witness and to not covet. What do these two mean, and how do they fall into the rest of the law?

On this show, we got to sip on coffee from the Anchor Coffee Co, out of North Wilkesboro, NC. EP101: Thou Shall Not Murder?

The sixth commandment is "You shall not murder." Exodus 20:13. This seems like a simple commandment. As long as we don't kill someone we are good, right? What does the Bible mean by murder? What if there is an accident, and someone loses their life? Also, how do we view this rightly in light of the Sermon on the Mount?

Today we sipped on Mad Priest Coffee out of Chatanooga, TN. EP100: Keeping it 100!

Today we are celebrating our 100th episode. Believe it or not, it's been two years since we sat down and said we wanted to record our conversations and put them out for people to hear. This show has been a blessing to us and we hope it's been a blessing to our listeners. In this show, we reflect on the fun we've had, and some of the tough times, too. It is a blessing to sit in front of these mics every week and seek the truth one sip at a time.

Today we sipped on a Haitian coffee brought to us from a listen who went to Hati on a mission trip. Kemp started a cold brew on Sunday, and on Wednesday, it was great.

We talk all the time about our conversations backstage. EP99: Honor or Obey

Along with every other commandment, the Fifth Commandment is not an easy one to follow. "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you." Exodus 20:12. Two things jump off the page with this Commandment. First, this is starting to point horizontally to our relationship with other people. Secondly, this is the only commandment with a promise. That promise is that if we follow the Commandment, our days will be long.

The main contention in our conversation this week; is honoring and obeying the same thing? Do you have to obey your parents to honor them, and if so, what does that mean for people who have a strained relationship with their parents?

Today we sipped on a Haitian coffee brought to us from a listen who when to Hati on a mission trip. Kemp started a cold brew on Sunday, and on Wednesday, it was great.

We talk all the time about our conversations backstage. EP98: Even the Sabbath Condemns

In this show, we discuss the 4th Commandment. It seems simple, right, remember the Sabbath. But even the Sabbath condemns us. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." Exodus 20:8-11

What is the proper view of the Sabbath? In this show, we discuss how people take this commandment out of context and how we should properly view it. We are instructed to work six days, and spend a day focusing and worshipping God.

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP97: Oh My Bob!

This week we continue our series on the 10 Commandments. We take on the 3rd Commandment. "You shall not take the name of the Lord God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." Exodus 20:7. Most assume this is concerning our language. We know we should not use his name as a cuss word, but there is so much more than that. How do we revere God's name? Do we approach his name with honor?

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP96: Deeper things of God vs a Comic Book

In this show, we discuss the 2nd Commandment. Exodus 20:4-6 states "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I am the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who love me and keep my commandments." We believe as laymen that God is telling us in these verses that we shall not create an image to worship. It seems pretty simple to us.

Apparently, there is a portion of the "reformed" community who believe that any image of God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit is a violation of this commandment. They even have a code for it, "2CV." The question is, if any image of the trinity is a sin, then is a children's Bible that has a picture of Jesus a sin? Or the movie "The Passion of Christ," was it a sin for Mel Gibson to produce this movie, or the actor to play Jesus?

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP95: Is God Jealous?

Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me." This the first Commandment. It there a reason this Commandment is first? Why did God start off with this Commandment? In this episode, we discuss these questions and break down the meaning behind it.

When looking at the Commandments you need to ask three questions. What does this tell us about the lawgiver? What does this tell us about the law breaker? How does this point us to Christ?

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP94: 10 Commandments

In the Bible, there are several types of laws. One type is ceremonial. When the Old Testament explains the Tabernacle and the Temple, they are explaining the ceremonial law. Then there are social laws. This is when the Bible tells us to not to eat shellfish or not to get tattoos. These are social laws given to a certain people in a certain timeframe. Lastly, and most importantly, it there is a moral law that is given. The 10 commandments fall under the moral law. EP92: Bathroom Etiquette

This show is pretty random. The guys review their weekend. Kemp, Wes, Bob, and our friend John drove down to Alabama to support our Berean Media Network brothers in Proposal 16. The guys met up with the Reformed Outlook in Birmingham to help present this Bill to the governor of Alabama. This Bill, if signed in Alabama would make abortion illegal. The idea is that the state can override the federal law like some states did with marijuana. The federal government never stepped in with those states, why would they do so when Alabama makes abortion illegal? EP91: Dr. Bruce Ashford

In this episode, we had the privilege of interviewing a friend of the show, Dr. Bruce Ashford. He is provost of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a columnist at Foxnews.com. We had Dr. Ashford on before the primaries to discuss the election. On today's show, we discussed how we are to engage the world with the Gospel. You can read his articles at BruceAshford.net.

For the first time in history, we are in a post-Christian society. What this means is that the church has lost it's voice in society. Where the church used to be the voice of reason, and morality, now the church is thought of as out of date and a source of bigotry. Does the church deserve this designation, and if so, how do we share the Gospel in this situation?

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP90: BMN Tulip Series: Irresistible Grace

Up next on the BMN TULIP series we are discussing irresistible grace. We have the Reformed Outlook with us to help explain this doctrine. Irresistible grace states that before the foundations of the world, God elected who will be adopted into the family of God, Ephesians 1:4-6. This doctrine holds that whoever God elects will be in the family of God because his call is effectual. That means they, the elect, will not be able to say no to God's grace, John 6:37. This is a hard concept to grasp. All of the 5 points of the TULIP build on one anther. To understand this one concept, we must understand that we are totally deprived, we can not call on God. That God's election into his family is unconditional. There is nothing we have to do to get it, all the work is done by God. That Christ died for all of the elect, therefore his grace is irresistible.

On this episode, we drank Kaldi's Coffee from the great city of St. Louis, MO. EP86: When Potluck Goes Bad

When potluck goes bad! We call our episodes where we don't have a topic to discuss "potlucks." In most southern churches, a potluck is a meal when everybody brings something different. Most of the time, it's a wonderful meal. Then, there are times when you look around in the meal and think, who brought the tuna casserole? We hope this is show is more like the great fried chicken everyone hopes for, not the tuna casserole.

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. It is an awesome ministry that is all about Faith, Family, and Freedom. In this show we tried their Liberty Roast, it was a great evening coffee. EP85: Presbyterians and Baptist United

We are so excited about our guests this week. First, Pastor Morrie Lawing is back. He is pastor of Christ Chruch ARP, which is Associated Reformed Presbyterian. We also have Patrick and Travis back to help us discuss baptism. In this episode, we discuss Paedobaptism vs Credobaptism. What this means is, should we baptize children or only adults? What we get is a lesson in Covenant theology.

We believe and hold to the idea that there is one covenant. When God made the promise in Gen 3:15, it is the same covenant throughout the whole of Scripture. What has changed is the administration of it. How does this affect us today? Should we be baptizing children into the covenant of God, or do we wait until they make a profession of faith?

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP84: Fathered by God

In this episode we have our friend John come by and discuss the book "Fathered By God," by John Eldridge. This book discusses the path to manhood that everyman takes. We start of by discussing how all men have been wounded by someone or something, but it is through those struggles that we rise up and become men. All men go through stages in life, like the warrior phase and the love phase. Come hear more about this book.

This is a description of the book from iTunes.

"There is a path leading to authentic manhood, cut by men who have gone before us, sons following in the footsteps of their fathers, generation after generation. There are perils along the trail, even disasters all the more reason to rely on the guidance of a Father who has gone before."

But in an age when true fathers are in short supply, how do you find the path to manhood? How do you steer clear of the dangers?

John Eldredge calls men back to a simple and reassuring truth: "God is our Father. In life's trials and triumphs, God is initiating boys and men through the stages of manhood from Beloved Son to Cowboy to Warrior to Lover to King to Sage."

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. EP83: Stop Singing Louder

In Europe, during War World II, Jews would be forced onto trains and then shipped to concentration camps. There, they would be murdered. As the train traveled on, it would pass by Christian churches that knew where the train was headed. As the noisy train passed on, the church would say "Sing louder," to drown out the reminder of death as it passed by. Today, we do the same thing when it comes to abortion. We allow the culture to change the words of the reality of abortion. We, as Christians, allow the world to call it "a choice," "women's health," "a clump of cells," instead of calling it what it truly is...Murder!

We, at the Laymen's Cup, are pro-life. What that means to us is that we believe in supporting a child from the moment of conception, to the the moment of death. We want to support the child, the mother, the father in all aspects of life. That is why we have teamed up with the East Lincoln Pregnancy Care Center. They counsel women who are at a moment of criss when they find out they are pregnant. They tell the truth in giving their options. If the woman decides to abort the child, then they are there to counsel her through the process in the Gospel as well. The have programs for father too! Please go check out their website. http://www.eastlincolnpcc.org.

We are teaming up to support them. We will be attending the dinner that was mentioned on the show on April 6th. If you'd like to support the PCC, you can give directly to them, or if you donate to the show, through our support page, we will donate everything we raise from now until then to the center.

Holly mentioned several links tonight. EP82: A.C.T.S

Is there are a way we are supposed to pray? Are there certain words, or patterns we are to use? In this episode we discuss prayer. A.C.T.S. is a model we use to pray that goes along with the model Jesus gave us in Matthew 6. If you are a follower of Christ, you know that we are to pray, that is not the question, but how are we to do it?

This episode was brought to you by Dangerous But Good. It is an awesome ministry that is all about Faith, Family and Freedom. In this show we tried their Liberty Roast, it was a great evening coffee.
Can we stand on the Word of God? We can say without a shadow of a doubt that we know God's word is true and perfect. In every aspect of life, science, history, faith, family, you can trust the Word of God, and know that it attains everything we need for salvation.

Thank you for listening. EP80: Load the Canon

How do we know we can trust the Bible? Last week we discussed the Canon, which means how the Scripture was measured. This week we interviewed a pastor from Nashville to help with this topic. Pastor Tom Agnew is lead pastor of Grace Church, in Smyrna, TN. He received his Bachelors from Carson-Newman College and his MDIV from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Pastoral Ministry. He is married to Amanda, and they have three boys, Caleb, Asher, and Judson. Grace Church is a plant church from Providence Baptist in Nolensville, TN. Tom makes a great point on the show, that most of the time he does not have to prove that the Bible is true, but he does spend time explaining that the Bible is inerrant and is infallible.

Thank you for listening. EP79: Why the Bible?

Why can we believe in the Bible? As the guys were having a conversation this week, this question was asked, "if an atheist does not believe in the Bible, how can we tell them that it is true?" Sometimes, it is not enough to just say that what the Bible says is true. There are times that we have to present evidence that supports Biblical truth. In this episode we started to walk through how we got the Bible and the process of canonicity.

Thank you for listening. EP78: Liberty vs Duty

We all know that with Christ we have freedom in him. With that freedom, we also have a duty to serve. 1st Corinthians 10:23 says "All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful, but not all things build up." In this episode we discuss what has more weight, our liberty or duty?

Thank you for listening. EP76: JW's and Patrick

We have all had that dreaded knock on the door. You are at home, watching football, relaxing, then all of sudden, two people knock on your door wanting to discuss their church with you. How do we respond with the Gospel in these circumstances? Patrick has a passion, and does an amazing job sharing the Gospel with Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses. In this episode we discuss how to share with these groups and how to continue the Gospel conversation with them.

Thank you for listening. He brought us some this week, that was good. "Tueste Especial," Special Roast is the name of it. It was a great, smooth coffee. We can't wait to have more of it.

It is always our hope to get the Gospel out to as many people as possible and you can help us by sharing the show. Word of mouth is the greatest way we will get the show out to the masses. Thank you.

Please pray for us, as we are praying for you.

Kemp, Shaun, Wes and Bob

EP:76 The Best of 2016

We know that 2016 was a tough year. We saw a difficult election cycle and lost more celebrities than one would like to count. Most people are excited to see 2016 go. We at the Laymen's Cup have a lot to be thankful for. We have be been blessed beyond our wildest imagination. The show has grown by leaps and bounds. We have been downloaded on every continent, and people have reached out to us from numerous states and other countries.

The Laymen have had some ups and downs, too. One of our own, Patrick, went on into ministry, and even though we are really proud of him, it was hard to see him go. Then Bob came on, and now we can't imagine doing the show without him.

We held our first annual golf tournament that raised money for Shaun and Ann's adoption. People came from all over to help us raise money and had blast doing it.

We want to say thank you for all the interviews, from Dr. Danny Akin, Dr. Frank Turkey, Dr. Douglas Wilson, and the many friends who came to hang out, like Travis, McCoy, and John. We owe a huge thank you to Dr. Chris Griggs, our pastor, and the one who holds us in check. Thank you to all who have participated in the show.

The Laymen are especially thankful for all of the listeners. We do the show, first for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and also for you. We love all the reviews, emails and messages throughout the year. It encourages us each time someone reaches out to us.

We hope that in everything thing we do we bring honor and praise to Jesus. Our hope is always to portray the Gospel in every conversation.

Thank you for listening. You can find us on iTunes, and we are on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @laymenscup.

Please pray for us, as we pray for you.

Kemp, Shaun, Wes, and Bob.

EP75: Open Handed Thieves

Merry Christmas! We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas. We have a special treat for you today. We would like to introduce you to the Two Thieves. These are two guys near St. Louis who started a Podcast a few months ago. We recorded a show together where we discussed a few open handed issues, like what is Reformed Theology, how we started podcasting, and past guests. We hope you enjoy this show, and go check out the Thieves at www.twothievespodcast.com

Thank you for listening. If you are listening on iTunes please subscribe and leave a review. If you have comments or questions for us, you can email us at laymenscup@gmail.com. We also have videos you can view here on our website or on Youtube. We are on Facebook at www.facebook.com/laymenscup. You can also follow us on Instagram and Twitter @laymenscup.

Today's coffee is a secret. Kemp threw a wrench in the mix and played a game with us. As it turns out, Wes is the only one who gets it right.

Again, Merry Christmas, everyone. We believe that Christ came on this very special day, or at least its what we celebrate on this day. When he came, he came as God, laid in a manger, fully God and fully man all in one package. We believe in the Virgin Birth, and the perfection of his life. Without those facts, his death would be meaningless. With it, his death means everything.

It is always our hope to get the Gospel out to as many people as possible and you can help us by sharing the show. Word of mouth is the greatest way we will get the show out to the masses. Thank you.

Please pray for us, as we are praying for you.

Kemp, Shaun, Wes and Bob
