Ep 173 - Jonathan Steele on a decade of ultras and Hardmoors Race Series

Jonathan Steele had an unusual journey into the world of ultrarunning many years ago. A competitive bodybuilder and martial artist, the shift to ultrarunning wasn't exactly on the cards until he was holidaying in the Lake District and a sign for a local trail route caught his interest. That route was the Bob Graham Round and he decided to make that his first foray into ultrarunning!

In this episode, Jody speaks with Jonathan about attempting Bob Graham, his three attempts at the UTMB (and why the first one failed somewhat...) and just what attracted him to running some of the most physically and mentally challenging races in the UK, including The Hill - a 160 mile race up and down Shining Tor 55 times!

For many, Jonathan is, of course, better known as the race director for the Hardmoors Race Series and explains where the ideas for the trail and ultra series came from, what the Hardmoors community is like and the best way to tackle the races are for a newbie.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 172 - Pamela Chapman Markle on running 100 miles as your first race

Pamela Chapman Markle is a phenomenon. At the age of 55, she decided to take up running, thanks to the suggestion of a work colleague.

However, when she went to sign up for the Rocky Raccoon 50 miler (a pretty punchy first race, admittedly), it was full. Undeterred Pamela signed up for the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler instead... (yes, a 100 miler as her FIRST race!) and the rest is history.

Jody and David speak to Pamela about how she manages to hold down a full-time job while also kicking ass on ultras from the Keys Ultras to Badwater and the Brazil 135.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 167 - Stephanie Case on training for ultras in extreme conditions

Training for ultras is hard. All those long runs and hours spent on trails trying to build endurance and maintain your conditioning.

Now imagine having to do that in a war zone.

Instead of miles of trails you can run on, you have to train by running a km loop around a dusty compound in searing heat. Or you only have access to a treadmill in a dark, lonely gym. Or a small underground car park.

Well, if that sounds grim just wait until you hear what Stephanie Case has to do to get ready for her crazy ultras. A veteran of some of the world's most infamous ultras including the Tour des Geants and Barkley Marathons.

As a human rights lawyer for the UN, Stephanie has to do all her training in the most restrictive conditions, having been based in flash points such as Gaza and Afghanistan.

In this episode, Jody and David speak to Stephanie about how she trains for her races in such conditions and discuss the impact of her Free To Run charity, which uses the power of running to help women and girls to overcome the harmful effects of conflict and discrimination.

And it is CRAZY, what she's managed to achieve. Well worth a listen.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 164 - Cal Major on paddleboarding the UK and post-adventure blues

Cal Major is on a mission to save our seas and oceans. A one-woman force of nature, Cal is founder of Paddle Against Plastic, a campaign designed to create awareness around the problem of plastic through her adventures. And what adventures!

Recently, Cal completed an epic journey paddle boarding the length of the UK from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise awareness, collect rubbish and shine a light on the problems in the mainstream press.

But that's just the start of it. In this episode Allie and Jody speak to Cal not only about her adventures at sea, but also on what it takes to face up to the mental challenge before, during and after.

Cal opens up about why it has taken so long to talk about her expedition and the pressure to live up to others' expectations on social media and being in the public eye. It's a great interview that gives an insight into what it's like dealing with the mental aspect of many of the huge challenges featured on the podcast.

Plus, Jody and Allie catch up with news from the Arran Ultra, London Marathon and discuss some rather hot political topics in the running world right now.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation!
Warning - this episode is a full shoe geek out, thanks to David's exclusive interview with Brett Holt, vice president of Nike Running Footwear.

David was at the high profile launch of Nike's follow-up racing shoe and speaks to Brett about exactly what is different and why the changes were made.

Here's what you'll hear:

The exact feedback Elliot Kipchoge gave Nike that led to the changes

How the issues with the last version of the shoe have been addressed

Why the shoe is priced at an eye-watering £239

And why, unless you're quick, you're not going to be getting your hands on this shoe... and it's all part of Nike's plan

Before the interview, David is joined by Allie for general BBR chit chat shenans and then after the interview is joined by Jody to break down what was said. Yes, it is confusing but roll with it, ok?

Oh, and don't forget to leave a confusing 5 star review on the Cultra podcast iTunes review page mentioning BBR.
Sussex Trail Events has built a bit of a reputation for putting on races that well... are a bit unusual.

As well as it’s roster of trail marathons (read muddy riverside marathons) and the Downslink Ultra, the company has hosted a number of one-off races most would be mad to complete including the Car Park Marathon (the value is in the name but this was originally invented by BBR, btw), The Pier Marathon - out and back up Southend's Mile long pier and a marathon which was laps around the Amex Stadium.

David and Jody talk to RD Jason McCardle about what it takes to put on races as well as some of the inside goings-on between RDs.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 158 - Jerry Odlin on running clubs

This week is a little bit special as David brings on his running club's director from Heathside, Jerry Odlin.

Jerry has been there and done it in terms of running clubs and lifts the lid on what goes on behind the scenes of one of London's popular running clubs, how the make-up of running clubs has changed, the challenges faced by clubs and generally how running has changed.

It's a fascinating view from Jerry and well worth a listen as BBR is on the verge of launching its own running club (if England Athletics don't boot BBR out before we've begun...)

Plus, there's the usual chat beforehand. Mainly inane, rarely valuable.

[LAST CHANCE] COMPETITION TIME!

WIN A TRAIL RUNNING HOLIDAY FOR TWO!

There are only a few days left of the competition to win a running holiday in Andalucia for two. Ep 157 - Professor Andrew Jones on runner's physiology

What Andrew Jones doesn't know about the human body and running isn't worth knowing.

No other person knows the capability and capacity of Paula Radcliffe in her prime. Andy supervised the measurement and monitoring of Radcliffe's running efficiency and aerobic capacity for more than a decade and knows in detail what makes the difference.

Andy has also been at the forefront of British sport for decades having consulted UK Athletics, various sporting bodies and major sporting brands such as Gatorade and Nike.

And (almost most) famously, Andy is the man behind the beetroot running thing. (His twitter handle is even @AndyBeetroot).

Now he shares his knowledge with the Do-Badders and BOY is this a great episode.

(We admit, it wasn't long enough - we're definitely getting him back on.)

Enjoy!

COMPETITION TIME!

WIN A TRAIL RUNNING HOLIDAY FOR TWO!

Seriously, we're not kidding.

Listen out in this episode right from the start for the instructions to win a holiday for two trail running in Spain.

Imagine that? Ep 147 - Courtney Dauwalter on running Big's Backyard Ultra

Courtney Dauwalter has one of the most impressive running resumes having completed and won a ton of the world's best-known (and toughest) ultramarathons, including MOAB 240 outright and fastest woman at Western States 100 last year.

But it's a different race that Jody and David explore with Courtney - Big's Backyard Ultra, a brutal race from the evil mind of Barklay Marathon's Laz. It's a race, not against time or distance but until the last person is standing around a 4 mile loop for as long as you can until the last person is left standing.

Seriously, this sounds awful/brilliant and Courtney is great.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 146 - Lisa Jackson on coming last in marathons

In this week's episode Jody and David talk to Lisa Jackson, author, runner and member of The 100 Marathon Club - but most interestingly Lisa has made a name for herself around her ability to come last in a string of races.

The discussion focuses on just how hard it is to actually come last in a race - especially when there seems to be just as much competition for the coveted last place spot - and what it's like when you're back of the pack. The chat also turns to elitism and celebrating slower runners and how to make running more inclusive.

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 145 - London City Runners

David and Jody speak with the founder of London City Runners, Time Navin Jones and Kerry Jones. The London City Runners one of the biggest success stories in running participation.

Founder Tim Navin Jones explains how the club started from humble beginnings and has rapidly grown to become the largest free running club in London (that isn't affiliated to a retailer). But what really interests the Do-Badders is that London City Runners now have their own runners bar... er.. we mean clubhouse in Bermondsey.

Tim also discusses the issues that beset the club when it tried to launch its own running England Athletics affiliated running club causing its own separatist problem (just as BBR attempts to become an affiliated club!).

A little warning - there's a weird echo on David's side for about 10 minutes before the main interview.

Anyway, it's a great listen.

The Silk Cut is around 50 minutes with Jody and David chatting about cross country, #CFTB and running crews before.

Enjoy!

Enjoy!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 143 - Ian McNamara on running marathons with NO training

Grit, strength, determination and ignorance...

... all qualities we admire and are essential when running your first marathon.

But what if you ran your first marathon without ANY training at NIGHT and with a SIX HOUR cut-off (oh, and you'd been drinking all day...)?

Sounds ridiculous, right?

Well, that's exactly what Ian McNamara did and his story of losing a bet and running his first marathon on no training made it to the pages of UNILAD.

Here's the story, if you didn't see it: https://www.unilad.co.uk/video/guy-completes-entire-marathon-without-training-as-punishment-for-losing-fantasy-football/

We'll level with you.
It's a cracker of an episode this week with Jody and David speaking to the legendary Thomas Blanc, OCR athlete, adventure runner and now quality manager for Spartan.

They specifically discuss Thomas's recent running of Survival Nicaragua and everything competitors had to do on this crazy-ass race.

Here's what you'll discover:

Why a career in agriculture and farming is the best preparation for the race

Why running with your sister is ALWAYS better than running with your partner

Why you should NEVER replace eggs with children

What Thomas's exact role is for Spartan and how he run his eye over Spartan races to make sure they're up to scratch

How he had to bribe a Greek farmer to get his Spartan Spartan race run

Of course, there's the usual catch-up shenanigans from Jody and David before and after, including an unprecedented amount of time dedicated to just two Netflix recommendations and discussing the question "why would you ever run Barklay Marathons?".

Which means the Silk Cut is at a punchy 32 minutes (skip ahead if you just want to hear the soothing tone of Thomas's silky Gallic voice).

Salut!

If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.

Join the conversation! Ep 101 - Camille Herron on breaking the 100 mile record

Ok, this week's episode is a bit special. And not in that way.

Bad Boy Running has bumped this right up the schedule because we had Camille booked in to speak to Jody and David simply for her badass drinking antics (and the fact she's sponsored by a brewery).

But as if by a huge amount of luck, Camille ( @runcamille ) only went and broke the 100 mile record at the Tunnel Hill 100 #TunnelHill100... on her FIRST attempt at a 100 miler.

CRAZY!

It's a slightly shorter interview with Camille on this episode but the guys manage to pack in:

How Camille manages to sneak in a beer or two on the race and how she discovered it as a race strategy (she even has a medical explanation which leaves the lads confused)

Exactly what Camille eats when she's running her 100 milers (or any race)

Why her weekly mileage will make your eyes water (no, seriously. SERIOUSLY this is ridiculous)

Why she decided to make the transition from road ultras to trail

And what she's planning next

Seriously, this is a great one.

Join the conversation! Ep 92 - Dale Clutterbuck on The Beer Mile

There's little the guys love more than talking about beer. Ok, probably drinking beer... but that doesn't exactly make a great podcast episode.

In this episode, Jody and David talk to British 1500m athlete Dale Clutterbuck who is looking to improve on his European Beer Mile record for the Beer Mile... but taking on the very best again in the Beer Mile World Champs shortly.

Dale reveals all about correct beer chugging technique and the pitfalls of training for such an auspicious event. He also reveals what life was like at St Mary's, tells tales of a bust-up on the track and gives his uncensored opinion on the state of athletics.

Also in this episode, Jody and David carry on the drinking theme by getting all nostalgic about the awful stuff they drank as teenagers... It's a pretty alcoholic and often nonsensical episode. Ep 83 - Adventure Racing Interview with Tom Davies

Jody and David are joined by Tom Davies an adventure racer who has taken part in not one, but TWO insane world championships. They discuss the dangers that he faced such as crocodiles, white water rivers, and, perhaps worst of all, riding a bike. Despite Jody's dismay at the fact that David got a cyclist on the podcast, this turns out to be an episode not to be missed. If you've never heard of adventure racing before this is a nice (and inspiring) overview of a sport that can be both strategic and exciting.

If you want to join the conversation then search for the Bad Boy Running Podcast on Facebook and request to be part of the group! Ep 80 - The A to Z of Bad Boy Running (Part 2)

Just like last week, Jody and David were worried. New listeners have flocked to the podcast in their tens, but how would they keep up with the obtuse in-jokes without alienating the new audience?

Well, as one smart Do-Badder suggested, they decided to record an A-Z of Bad Boy Running jokes covering all the references and in-jokes that have been made throughout the previous episodes so that it all makes sense!

This was advertised as a two-parter but, due to the sheer quantity, will now end up being a three-parter. Perhaps U should be for Unfulfilled Promises, right Josh?

Anyway... To join in with the fun, join the Facebook group.
