CHOOSING THE RIGHT GOALS

Everyone has a dream, a vision. In order to get to the ‘ultimate’ state, one has to chalk out ax exhaustive roadmap. This formal process of personal planning is called Goal Setting. Ambitious but finicky people set numerous goals but are often clueless as to how to work towards them! It is important to set the right goals that are realistic yet challenging.

Goals are normally set along different levels. We have just one life that God has given to us. You cannot become a doctor, lecturer, CEO of a company, engineer, finance expert, lawyer etc. all in one life! Hence, seek opinions and analyze your strengths, weakness. Put down in writing, your large scale goals. These goals must be further broken into smaller goals. And then work towards it step by step.

Prioritize your activities. For some persons, family is more important than work or vice versa. This is dependent on a lot of factors like values, attitudes, principles, upbringing, culture etc. Hence, once the main goals are put down, rank them in accordance to their importance. This helps in apportioning the appropriate time to each of the activities.

Goal setting is certainly more than just scribbling on a piece of paper. It has a definite, binding purpose. It is the roadmap to achieve your dreams. It has to be followed very strictly. A lot of goals look nice and idealistic. However, unless the goal is something you really want with all your heart, you will work towards it. Goals must be consistent with values, principles and aptitudes. It should not contradict each other. Example: With an annual income of $50,000 you cannot want to buy a house that costs $900,000.

Goals must be set in various areas: family, career, health, social, educational, financial. This way, there is a balance that is maintained in all areas and leads to a wholesome development as an individual. However, importance given to each area may vary. Believe in the power of positivity. Writing down goals leads to our subconscious mind to follow those instructions. The more positive the instructions, the more positive will be the results.

When you aim at the moon, you will shoot at the stars, if you miss the moon. Do not aim at the tree, for you will shoot the ground! Ensure that your goals are set high. They should be challenging, yet achievable. Concentrate on adding value to yourself everyday. We should live everyday, and not just exist.

Fill yourself with positive thoughts always. Write down your goals and put it up in a prominent place on the wall. Read it everyday. Put in on your cell phone as notes. Also make a copy of the goals on a word document on your desktop/laptop. Review your goals on a daily/weekly basis.

Make it part of your routine. Visualize yourself having achieved the goals! See in your mind’s eye, the benefits and fruits of your goals. Your subconscious mind will automatically drive you to get there. Resist temptation. Ask yourself – “will this action take me closer to my goal?” If yes, don’t pause! Else, you know what to do.

Set your goals. Prioritize. Lay your road map. Be aware of what you’re doing. Review regularly. Success will be all yours. Good luck!

The Most Important Type Of Goal For Your Life

Do you know what the most important kind of goal is for your life? We all have goals that we set and we know the importance of goal setting and it's one of those topics that gets beaten to death and a lot of us don't want to hear about goal setting anymore. We're sick and tired of goal setting. But we know they're necessary as well, and that's why we always come back to them. You do, I do, we all do goal setting at one level or another. Maybe you just do it mentally and you think about them from time to time. Other people like me, I'm very, very strict about my goals. I'm always writing them down and refining them. But there are different kinds, and this is a very, very critical aspect. There is a type of goal where you define what you want to do, there is a type of goal where you define what you want to have and there's also a kind of goal where you define who you want to be. The kind of person you want to be. It's the third one, the goals you set on the type of person you want to be, that are the most pivotal, most important and most influential in your life. Your material wants or even bigger wants than that, the things you would like to acquire, the things you would like to eventually achieve in your life, some you'll hit and some you'll won't. Some will take longer than planned, some you'll maybe get shorter than you planned. They're going to be all over the map. As an example, you may be at a certain financial position right now. Let's say you're earning $50,000 a year and you want to take that to $100,000. There are a number of different ways you could do that. You could set a goal to do that within the next year, the next six months or the next three years and you go after it. You may or may not hit the goal, and you may or may not try as hard as you can, although the whole point of goal setting is you do try and you go for it. But this is a measurable, specific thing that you're shooting for and you may or may not get there. There's all kinds of circumstances, things that could come up that could prevent it from happening. But think about the type of goal where you decide who you want to be, and the exercise of writing down your goals on a daily basis and reviewing them. Sure, you can have a plan that says I want to get from 50k to 100k and I'm going to do this, this, this and this over the next X amount of months or years and you do those things and that plan may or may not work. But what if you started asking yourself or writing a goal down to say, here's who I want to be. I want to be a positive and uplifting person. I want to be loving towards my family. Every time I see my family I want them to feel excited in my presence. I want them to feel uplifted. I want them to feel inspired. When I meet new people I want them to feel like they just met somebody really interesting, and they want to get to know me at a deeper level. I want to set a goal to be the kind of person that follows through on every commitment I make to myself. I'm going to achieve XYZ by a certain date, such as I'm going to lose 20 pounds by March 30th is very results driven. It's very achievement driven, and the timeline for that may change. You don't know how quickly you can lose that weight and you want to be able to do it in a healthy way, so you may have to adjust that plan. But who do you have to be to reach that weight? You have to be the kind of person who commits to their goals, who does whatever it takes, who when they say they're going to do something they do it and follow through and hold themselves accountable. So here's my challenge to you, or even call it a suggestion or tip. Begin journaling on a daily basis, writing down where you're at but more importantly where you want to go, goals. It's very fun to set goals like the type of income you want to earn, the type of business you want to run, the trips you want to take, the material possessions you want to own. All those things are cool. If you want to go to a conference next year to learn something new, write that down. That's a great goal to have. You need to know how much money it's going to take you to get there and all that. But I also want you to start thinking about two or three or even four who do I want to be type of goals. What I found is when I started doing this, I started writing things down like I want to be an inspiring person to be around for my family. I want my family to feel loved and excited when I'm around. I want my family to run and give me a huge hug when I walk in the door after being gone for a long time. That's the kind of person I want to be. When I write that down and remind myself this is who I want to be, all those other goals I find come to me a little bit more naturally. They come to me easier. It's because I'm acting and behaving in a way that's congruent with those goals. If I say I want to be a committed, dedicated person who follows through on his commitments and then I set a really, really aggressive goal like doubling my income in what some may deem an unrealistic period of time, I'm way more likely to hit that goal if I'm the kind of person who sticks to his commitments and then goes above and beyond the call of duty and does whatever it takes in any situation to create whatever I envision. So that's the difference. That's the key. You may not have done this before. I know it was a relatively new concept for me. I was always writing down my materials wants. I was always writing down the achievement-based goals and not the who do I want to be kind of goals. When I started doing that, it had such a deep impact on a daily basis. It literally, in those moments of weakness where I wanted to break a commitment and go back into an old habit that would have prevented those cool goals from coming into my life, these being goals would remind me of the kind of person I need to be and I want to be and intend to do. I want to live this way every single day, and so I write those goals down on a daily basis and it keeps me in check. It keeps me on track for where I want to go. So do this. Have some fun with it. Think about the kind of person you want to be, write it down, explain it in as much detail and then do it daily and repeat it to yourself and start living this way. All those material goals and wants are going to come to you.

Let the Leader in You Shine

Not everyone is a natural born leader. Occasionally you may find yourself at a loss when delegated with a task to oversee a certain group of individuals. You begin to panic. Your serene comfort zone has just been crossed over by a superior persona whom you regard with deep seated ambivalence.

There really is no reason for you to fuss and fret. Leadership is as much a skill as a talent so there is a great hope for those who know a zilch about managing people. Therefore, if it is a skill, anyone can learn the basics of leadership through constant practice.

Here are some basic values that you need to assimilate in your life to make you become better at handling issues at the pinnacle of a group:

Service-oriented. To become an effective leader you need to understand that you are giving much of yourself to the group. An excellent leader knows that a lot of sacrifices have to be made for the sake of the group’s success. You are at the front of the pack not because you are important or famous, but because the entire group needs your service. Without your efforts, less goals and objectives will be achieved.

Management. You are placed in a position where decisions have to be made. It is understood that for the group to attain its goals, all members need to contribute yet unity and coordination among the members still rely much on your skills as a good manager. You need to learn how to delegate tasks, how to modify behavioral errors, how to reach out to everyone for inputs, and several other skills inherent in a good manager.

Resolute. You have to demonstrate a certain degree of determination. You have to be steadfast in your decisions and extremely confident about the choices you make. You are the strength of the whole team; therefore, you must maintain a firm and unflinching character, always eager to take the team to the next level. You should make yourself accessible to each member but you have to delineate a line between respect and insolence. Make each member know that you are the leader and that they are in excellent hands.

Impartiality. As a leader you must promote an equal opportunity zone for everyone. Never give special treatment to anyone. If an individual has brought fame and triumph to the group, give him due felicitation and use that as a means to encourage idle members. Be fair and reasonable.

These are just some of the many values that you need to incorporate within your character to improve your chances of becoming a very effective leader.

7 Easy Ways to Overcome Problems

Problems are present in everyone’s daily life. Life is filled with never-ending problems. We all experience problems at work, home, with relationships, children, society, etc. They just creep up everywhere in every area of our life.

When problems overshadow you, you are affected by physical and mental illness. Problems seem to be one common factor that pervades each and every soul on planet earth. Could we look at problems in a positive way and overcome them easily? We could.

Problems are only problems if we define them so. You could look at problems in a different light. Whenever you encounter a problem in future, try to look at it indifferently. If you analyze your problems they may turn out to be learning events in real life. Problems are solvable.

Here are 7 easy ways to overcome problems:

Own a problem – People generally blame others when they are faced with problems. Problems never go away with this approach. Instead, accept responsibility for the problem. Do not blame anyone else or any other circumstance for your problem. When you own a problem, you take up the issue in your hand and start to work for a solution with a personal interest. This is the first sign of progress towards a solution.

Define the problem – You have to define a problem in order to understand the exact issue. Analyze it to understand it well.

Ask the right questions - what is the problem, how did it start, how bad is the effect, etc. When you look into the problem rather than at the problem, you get to the core of the problem. Getting at the root cause would eradicate the problem forever. So define and look for ways to eradicate the root cause of your problem.

Analyze the ‘ifs’ and ‘but’s - Ask more questions such as: ‘what if the problem is not solved immediately? What is the worst outcome? ‘But, if not solved, how long could you go on with this problem?’ etc. Be prepared to face risks and proceed to accept the worst. After good brainstorming, you would feel calm since you are ready to face the consequences.

List possible solutions – When you are calm look around for possible solutions. Make a list of all possible answers. Again brainstorm. You could examine and evaluate all possible solutions. You would be surprised at the possible answers you have at hand for your problem.

Select the best solution - After examining and evaluating and brainstorming, you would be able choose the best possible solution. Once you decide on a particular solution take steps to act on it immediately.

Focus only the end results – Focus only on what you desire to achieve. According to the law of universe, your thoughts, feelings, intentions and actions create your reality. If these were clear, your problems would also clear out into thin air.

So remember, whenever you have a problem – own it, define it, analyze the ‘if’s and ‘but’s, list your solutions, brainstorm and select the best one, act on it immediately and focus on positive results. It is that simple!

Six Simple Rules in Life

Life is simple and peaceful if you incorporate the following six rules into your daily routine.

1. Practice some quite time everyday

Quietness of mind is the secret ingredient to a happy and successful life. Make it a regular habit to enjoy some quiet time every day. To start with set aside just 10 minutes at the start of the day. Just sit in a quiet place without paying any attention to your passing thoughts. You could pay attention only to your breathing and notice your chest and abdomen while breathing. This is not yoga, meditation, etc. This is simply a quiet time. Just ten minutes a day in the morning or night before bedtime is ideal for you to enjoy the peace within. If you make this a regular habit you would witness a better quality of life real soon.

2. Exercise your body and mind

Daily exercise keeps you away from mental and physical illness. Exercise keeps your body flexible, supple and strong. This leads to a balanced mind. There are plenty of good exercises you could choose from to keep yourself healthy and enjoy a long life. If you have not been exercising, you could start today. Just go for a brisk walk and feel the fresh air filling your lungs.

3. Eat sensibly

This area really poses a challenge for most of us. ‘You are what you eat’ is not just a mere saying. It is a fact of life. What we eat, why we eat, when we eat and how we eat are important factors related to our physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. It would be wise to choose a healthy diet and stick to it. Your goal should not only be to lose weight but also to keep it under control so that your body and mind does not bear the strain of overweight.

4. Choose a fulfilling profession or job

Many people have a habit of switching jobs. They do not seem to know what they are looking for. They are not sure if they are after money, challenge, job satisfaction, etc. It is important that you have clear-cut ideas of what you are looking for in a job. You should love your job in order to do it well and succeed in it. You would find fulfillment in your career only when you love your profession or job.

5. Maintain good relationships

Life is for sharing. Share your love and happiness with your friends and family. Learn to cherish your relationships. Respect everyone around you and develop good communication skills to establish truly valuable relationships. Relationships make your life meaningful.

6. Get enough sleep

Sleep restores energy. Make sure to get 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Deep, regular and restful mind is good for body and mind. If you have unhealthy sleeping habits get rid of them and develop good sleeping habits. Enjoy the benefits of good sleep.

When you practice these simple rules you are bound to enjoy a happy, healthy and peaceful life. Life is quite simple, really!

How to Stop Procrastinating

Imagine this situation: you have a test in two days that you should be studying for. Problem is, the weather outside is perfect, you cannot focus on your work, and if that were not enough, you just do not feel like studying right now. After all, you have two days to prepare for the test.

How hard can it be? Almost everyone has been in this situation at some point in their lives. While some actually work better at the last minute, it is not a habit that you should practice. Like all things, procrastination in moderation is a way for the brain to re-energize and refocus. Too much procrastination, though, and you could find yourself over-worked, over-stressed and quickly burnt out.

How can you finish your work on time and still enjoy yourself in the process? The following are a few tips that should help you to get off the road to perpetual procrastination and help you get back on the road to effective productivity.

Step 1: Make a schedule for yourself of what is due and when it is due.

If you have a gage of when everything is due, you will be less likely to put it off until the last minute. Additionally, the presence of due dates on a calendar will serve as a reminder to you, as well as an organizational tool. By breaking down your responsibilities and their deadlines into terms of what and when is due, you will be less stressed when you finally do begin to do the work.

When you are less stressed, you generally tend to be happier and more relaxed. Despite what you may believe, the relaxation experienced when you are procrastinating is a false one. Many people, despite the fact that they appear to be worry-free are, in fact, subconsciously concerned about the very things that they are putting off.

Step 2: Prioritize.

Separate your work into piles of “urgent” and “can wait.” No one likes to find themselves surrounded by excessive amounts of work and bills; however, by putting the most important ones first, you can eliminate some of the stress involved. Your “important” work should include items that are due soon and large projects that will time-consuming.

On the other hand, your pile should include items that are not conducive to you that do not need to be addressed immediately, such as writing letters to friends, finishing the latest pop culture magazine, or re-organizing your CD collection, all of which further contribute to your procrastination.

The use of Post-It notes or other organizational supplies are heavily recommended, as they provide a more vibrant and therefore more forceful reminder of what needs to be done and when it should be done.

Step 3: Focus.

All of the organizational materials in the world will not help you if you aren't willing to help yourself. Sit down, choose one task to focus on at a time, and begin working on it until you are finished, then move on to the next task. Before you know it, your work will be completed, and you will actually be able to feel relatively stress - free without the looming worry of work owed.

But from where exactly has this concept of impossibility crept into our minds? How do you know that a particular task is ‘impossible’ to achieve?

Our ‘ego’ is meant to protect us from prospective dangers. Based on past experiences, the ego makes judgments. However, one should not let ego control him/her. Instead, from the moment one starts taking control of the ego, all the so called ‘impossible’ things will suddenly seem ‘possible’, almost instantaneously!

We have preconceived notions about various things and we assume that it is ‘reality’. Eg: When you touch a hot stove by mistake, you take your hands off almost immediately by reflex action. So the ‘ego’ has learnt that fire is dangerous. Now if someone asks you to voluntarily touch a hot stove, you will not, because, your ego warns you against consequences. On the other side, have we ever wondered how certain people have been able to walk on fire?! They have proved that fire-walk is NOT impossible. These are the people who take control of their ego. This is the first step to achieve any dream that you think is impossible.

What we see is only our perception. To a large extent, our perception is influenced by our level of awareness. Sometimes, we find some problems difficult to solve. The same problem will look a lot easier when you look at it a little later. This happens because we grow constantly and we should work towards gaining more knowledge and increasing our level of awareness. Those who achieve the impossible have an everlasting thirst for knowledge. The more you gain of it, the concept of ‘impossibility’ will vanish from your mind.

There are only three key focus points to achieving impossible dreams: Clarity, Commitment and Focus. Be clear of what your “impossible dream” is. Have the burning desire in you to convert it into reality. Channelize all efforts towards achieving the dream with a single and focused mind.

Visualize yourself and your state of mind when after having achieved the goal. How would you feel? Wonderful, right?! You feel are in a state of renewed confidence and self-worth. Keep these fruits in mind, and work towards it. Draw a road map to achieve the goal. Put down the goals in writing and stick it on your wall/pinboard such that you are reminded of it everyday. Establish timelines, review your progress periodically and take alternative courses of action when necessary.

Do You Need A High IQ To Be Successful?

IQ is a term that is commonly heard of. It is an abbreviation for Intelligence Quotient, a test that is used to measure intelligence.

Imagine being put through a host of tests and being awarded a number that stands for your intelligent quotient! What does this number really mean? What is its significance?!

IQ tests are used to distinguish people into the normal, gifted or challenged category.

Children are tested relative to each other in data interpretation, logical reasoning, vocabulary, quantitative abilities and spatial orientation. The most commonly used test for measuring IQ is the Stanford-Binet intelligence test. A person with an IQ score of 100 is said to be ‘normal’ and those with scores of 130 above are said to be ‘intellectually gifted’. Does this mean that people with a high IQ are extraordinarily successful and those with an average IQ are limited to average success? Certainly not!

A television program in Canada recently tracked down several people with high IQ scores.

One such person was found working as a motorcycle mechanic, who hangs out in bad company and is a frequent visitor of the jail! Another such person works as a in a bar, earns a pittance and lives in a pitiful garage. Very clearly, a high IQ certainly does not ensure success! So all you ‘normal’ people out there get out of your depression! And the alleged intelligent ones buck up, for you ought to sweat it tout to make it to the top!

What IQ tests measure is a certain potential.

This potential ought to be nurtured and develop by the person who is blessed with it. However, one may not have an inclination to do so! Example: there might be a person who’s gifted with an extremely melodious voice, but hates music. Or someone who has a perfect physique for a high jumper, but may loathe sports! In these cases, having a high IQ means practically nothing.

Standard IQ tests measure only a part of intelligence potential.

But that cannot be called ‘intelligence’ from a wholesome perspective. Psychologist Howard Gardner of Harvard University says that there are 7 types of intelligence - verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, visual-spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, social-interpersonal and intra-personal. IQ tests do not accurately measure all of these.

There are people who do exceedingly well in school. But they are failures in real life, because they lack the dynamism and smartness to pull them through work. On the other hand, there are people who have failed miserably in school, but have emerged millionaires, thanks to their smartness and practical orientation in life.

Was Michelangelo incompetent because he was not a great mathematician? Or was Einstein inept because he was not a great artist?

Which one of these two men is more intelligent? How should intelligence actually be defined? The answer is, there really is no definition of intelligence that explains its totality. Hence, a mere IQ number cannot determine a person’s success/failure.

Qualities such as determination, willpower and vision play a greater role in a person’s success.

There really is no substitute to hard work. Creativity, foresight, optimism, goal-orientation and the drive to succeed are essential qualities of a successful person. There have been great people in the history, who have been nothings in their childhood but have built empires today because of their vision and drive. Hence, an IQ score is just a number. It does not define a person.

Successful people develop and exhibit various qualities that are responsible for their success. It cannot be attributed entirely to their IQ. So buck up! And work hard! Dream big and success will be all yours! :)

Getting Through A Bad Day

No matter how hard we try to reverse situations, we come across these days where everything, I mean EVERYTHING goes wrong.

You feel so ridiculous and despondent at the end of it. You’re angry, low, and gloomy all day. The day normally begins with something that is completely unpleasant and it does not get any better during the course of the day!

Yes, we’re talking about one of those “bad” days, when you feel like you’re the unluckiest human being ever born and that you’re burdened with the world to carry on your shoulders. This state of mind is also associated with what we commonly call “depression”. We hear people say, “I’m so depressed in life.” They’re probably having a bad day!

The most fundamental of things that we have to keep in mind is that the “bad” phase is only temporary.

It will pass, sooner or later. The tendency to feel like ‘it’s all over’ is natural. It will also seem forever since you were caught in the quagmire. Remember, no matter how bad your problem is, it will get over eventually!

Let us focus on something we could do to get over the disgusted, depressed feeling for the moment! Indulge! Grab a pastry, or a chocolate or packet of potato chips! This is an instant remedy for that will cause a sugar rush and help you feel temporarily ‘up’. Do not make this a habit; you might just end up putting on too many extra calories!

Sometimes, you may not even know what exactly is bothering you or the reason for your feeling low. Watch a really sentimental movie. Cry it out. All your bottled up emotions will find a gateway. You will a lot better after you’ve cried your heart out and a nap soon after. You will rest your tired body as well, in the process. You will wake up feeling a lot lighter.

The above two solutions will help you get out of the state temporarily. However, if you think the “bad” day has a deeper underlying cause to it, you must analyze.

Although it might seem like a bad idea to dwell on the things that are going wrong in your life when you’re already in a bad mood, still think about it. You will realize the need to change. Change the situation/yourself or find a solution to the root problem, so that you don’t have bad days on account of that particular reason anymore. Recognize where you are and what you need to do, to fix the problem.

Think of all those people who’ve hurt you in the past and all those people that have taken you for a ride.

Sometimes it just takes a rotten day to help you realize that people whom you thought were your well wishers and friends are actually not. Realize now that those people did no good to you and will not do any good to you in future. Flush them out of your life, once and for all. Start anew.

Think of all those things that are responsible for your wretched day.

What you did wrong, who did what wrong, something else that you’ve always wanted to confront but have been putting off for ages. Clear it off from your mind NOW. Cry if need be. Get angry if need be. Take efforts to change those things that are in your hands. You certainly want to change those things that are responsible for you feeling so dismal. Accept those things that you refused to, all along. Accept reality.

Life is not always a bed of roses. It takes these “bad” days to help us all realize the truth. Sometimes, you see and realize a lot of things more clearly amidst pain. Reality hits hard and loud.

Somewhere, something has gone wrong about your life. You have to fix it. Your body and mind are telling you that. Are you listening?

You probably have decided to change your attitude towards the effective use of your time. Still, you are short of accomplishing your tasks. You begin to wonder whether you have made the right decision or not.

Do not lose hope and opt to go back to your old habits. You are making the correct decision. Overcoming the oppressive procrastination habit begins with a resolute choice to change. The road ahead is laden with stumbling blocks that will be extremely trying especially for someone who is used to taking the easy way out.

Acknowledge the fact that it is not going to be a smooth ride to success. Knowing what you are dealing with can spell all the difference.

Here are some helpful tips to achieve your goals through an effective time management:

Plan. It is your best defense against reverting to your old habits. Be specific about what you need to accomplish for a particular period. Write them all down and classify them according to the level of priority. You need to accomplish first the tasks which bear the highest priority. This way, you are able to spend much of your strength and energy on the most arduous tasks when you still have them. Later you will discover that the most difficult part is done and it becomes extremely easy for you to finish the rest of it.

Practice. You need to continually develop the habit of knowing the difference between effective time management and dawdling. Planning is the easier part of the whole process. It is very effortless to jot down goals and objectives but to actually accomplish them is the test of genuine desire to change. Be wary of potential disruptions. You have to be clever enough to spot even the most minute schedule interruptions. Shake them off at once and get on with the program. It is only through good practice that you can master the art of time management. The rule is not to be impenetrable, that is too impractical. Rather, you need to know the means to effectively put into practice what you have set to do whether you will achieve it or not.

Pat. Reward yourself whenever you have successfully accomplished any set goal. Do not be too hard on yourself. The point is to adapt a better understanding on the proper use of time. If you do achieve some of your goals, do give yourself a pat on the back. The fact that you have done well is already a reward in itself but you can go beyond that and indulge once in a while.

Life is short to be wasted on worthless activities. 5 Practical Steps for Professional Growth Development

Professional growth is essential for everyone.

Your quality and status of life depends on you position in your profession and financial income. Your professional growth plan would lead you to the position and income you desire so as to fulfill the dreams of your life.

Your professional growth development depends upon these factors: Your ambition, your drive, your abilities and your interests.

You should have a clear-cut idea about these factors so that your path towards your future becomes clearer to you. Your professional growth plans need not be complicated but you could write down simple but detailed plans so that you could eventually achieve them in time.

Here are a few tips to map out your professional growth plan:

Take responsibility and be in charge of your professional growth - Do not rely on others to map out your career plans. If you have a mentor or a manager to support do not hesitate to take advantage of it. But otherwise you would be better off scheduling and planning your own growth in order to reach the top.

Write a list of different ways you want to grow - If you would like to stay on with the current employer and plan to grow with the company you could look for skills you need to beef up. Check you performance reviews, feedback from management and peers, any appreciation letters, awards, etc. These are some inputs that could reveal your strengths and weakness. Whether you plan to change careers or go up the ladder in the same career find someone who has tread-ed the path before you and ask them for advice. Focus on one or two areas on improving at one time. Learn to grow slowly and steadily so that you could win the race.

Explore your options open before you, to learn and grow - Research your scope and options open before you. Check around the various educational opportunities, training opportunities, etc. that would help you to grow personally and professionally. Time management, leadership development and team building skills, etc. are essential for corporate promotions. Your social skills also develop along these lines.

Identify suitable options that fit your needs and learning style - Each one of us is unique. We all learn in different ways at different pace. Once you explore the learning options before you, consider the methods that best suit you –

Do you like interacting with others? Do you prefer to listen to classroom lectures? Are you a self-learner who learns by reading books? Are you a self-motivator? Do you have time needed to attend regular classes? How much could you spend on these programs? Does your company support your interests by paying for them? These are important points to explore.

Do not procrastinate and get started - The biggest and the most common barrier to development is procrastination. We all plan and talk about our plans. But only a few stick to their plans and start off at the planned time in a planned manner. What good is it if you just plan and do not take steps to execute your plans?

If you do not start, you would never succeed in your professional growth development. So start now.

What is life without challenges and problems?

Everyone faces challenges in life, regardless of age, gender, economic status, etc. Right from a young age up to a ripe old age everyone faces challenge almost everyday in life. The bigger your life’s goal, the greater is your challenge. Facing and overcoming problems require some amount of maturity, understanding and some strategy.

Here are four tips to face your challenges in life:

1) Learn to forget the problem and focus only on solutions – Well, forgetting the problem does not certainly make it disappear! But if you temporarily take your mind off the problem you would save yourself from unwanted anxiety. Unwanted stress would only lead to wasting your energy. You could instead spend that energy on looking for ways to solve the problem.

Majority of us just freeze when we are faced with challenging situations. Instead, if we could immediately look for solutions the problem may clear easily. This is not easy but with some self-awareness and positive attitude you would learn to find your way through problems. When you are challenged with a problem the next time, first set aside your emotions, understand the problem and search for a solution right away.

2) Get help by reaching out to friends and family: Sometimes when you just let go of your ego and shame and ask for help you would be surprised at the way people receive you with love and concern. What are family and friends for? These days support groups are available online and in the community for almost every problem. You have support groups for addictions, seniors, single parents, parenting, marriage, education, health and religion… just about anything.

When you have a problem do not think you are all alone. When you get in touch with these support groups you would realize that you are not the only one being tested by life’s challenges. You would share each other’s experiences and shoulder each other’s problems through these support groups. You could search for support groups in the Internet or call an expert, look in the newspapers, magazines, talk to people, etc. Support groups give a lot of strength and courage to fight your challenges.

3) Act now! - ‘Now’ is the best time to take on your challenges. Many people think and think and think and talk about it all the while but they would not move an inch towards a solution. What good is that? When you see a challenge, take action immediately. You would waste precious time if you wait around or wait for someone else to start dealing with your issues.

Build self-confidence and resilience and start to fight your problems and you would have overcome your challenge before it settles down on you! The faster you act, the speedier the problem gets solved.

4) Practice patience and Perseverance - Nobody is a born professional at solving problems. Each time a problem challenges you it is a new experience. You could act wise by learning to be patient and persistent and practice perseverance in order to study your pattern of problems. This is a good way to draw your strategies and act accordingly. Soon you would be a master at dealing with your challenges.

I have just one question for you,

"What Self Improvement Question

Are You Struggling With Today?"

Please let me know in the comments section below so I can

provide answers for you, that way you can help others as well!

Please share this podcast with those you care about!

Thanks, Don Weyant. SelfImprovementBrain.com

Do you believe that your belief system is what makes things work for you or against you?

With your belief system you could create a life with your own values and desires which could ultimately shape your future. If your life has not been successful then you should probably change your earlier beliefs so that the new ones work for you and not against you.

Here are some useful tips to change your belief system into one that could work for you.

Let go of fear - do not allow past experience of pain and fear guide you about what you need to do. Fear is an obstacle to growth. Fear freezes your mental ability to think positively. You should learn to empower yourself with positive attitude and get rid of fear. Stare fear in its face and just see what you are afraid of. When you analyze the causes and reasons for your fear you would realize that most of it is just created by yourself. If you have fear in your mind, erase it right away. Face your life with boldness and look for ways to reach for your goals.

Develop optimism– optimists are self-disciplined and persistent in what they want to achieve in their life. Optimists plan and take action to move forward. They constantly learn about how to get better at their skills. Their self-confidence helps them to look for solutions and lead them to success in their goals. If you are pessimistic it is time you shed your pessimistic attitude and develop optimism in its place.

See change as an opportunity for growth – change leads to growth. We all go through so many changes in life. We all learn to grow through these changes. If a particular belief is making you stagnate or blocks your progress in life, just change it and follow a new belief system that would enhance your growth and development in life. Get rid of your old belief and replace it with a new one.

Analyze your belief system – generally our beliefs are formed from our past experiences in life. We also adopt certain beliefs from our parents, culture, peer and environment. When you realize that your beliefs do not support you in your life, be brave and open yourself to build a new belief system. Life changes all the time and you could change your beliefs accordingly without feeling guilt or fear.

Adopt new beliefs, which you think would help you in your life. Write them down and practice them over and over consciously until they become a part of your daily routine

Educate yourself about your belief system. Learn to support your beliefs. Ask yourself why you believe in something, what made you change your old belief in its place, whether you are happy with your new beliefs, etc.

When you change your limiting beliefs and adopt new ones, you may see your course of life running smoothly.

I have just one question for you,

"What Self Improvement Question

Are You Struggling With Today?"

Please let me know in the comments section below so I can

provide answers for you, that way you can help others as well!

Please share this podcast with those you care about!

Thanks, Don Weyant. SelfImprovementBrain.com

Success results from cultivating certain habits and sticking to them.

Consistency is a must. Successful persons have a certain type of personality. Successful person thinks in a particular way, talks in a particular way and acts in a particular way.

Would you like to be a successful person too?

Here are a few principles of success that is bound to help you if you follow these strategies:

Develop a clear vision of what exactly you want to achieve in your life. Carry this vision in your mind at all times. This is the starting point to success.

Believe without any doubt that you would achieve your dreams. Believe in a higher power that has been giving you whatever you needed so far.

Stay away from negative influences such as negative people, books, articles, etc. Surround yourself with things that boost your belief that you would succeed.

Take responsibility for your future. Do not depend on anybody and take responsibility for your life without doubting success.

Make a habit of repeating positive affirmations. Speak out your affirmations in present tense as opposed to future tense. Writing down affirmations is more effective. This helps your mind to stay fixed and focused on your goal. This is also a good way to build your self-confidence and deepen your belief.

Make a firm commitment to action. Once you decide to take action stay committed and never give up. Once you deter from commitment your belief becomes shaky and unstable. If you do that then your efforts would just fall off like a deck of cards. You would have wasted all your time and energy you had invested on your efforts. So stay committed.

Set a specific goal. If you know what you really want to achieve you need to define it by making it a goal. Set specific goals. Your goals should be precise, measurable, realistic and timed.

Work out a plan of action. Break down your plan into smaller tasks or units. Do your task in smaller steps. Take one step or two each day while reminding yourself that each step is taking you closer to your goal. Your actions should be filled with faith, determination and purpose. Consistency is vital to reach your goal.

Never give up until you have achieved what you desire. Persistence is key to success. Treat every failure as a learning opportunity. But push yourself towards your goal with stronger faith.

Maintain an attitude of gratitude, realizing that your dream is becoming a reality. Look around you and be grateful for things that you already have such as a home, loving family, etc. Just stay grateful.

Be a giver - give your time, money and service to others. Be kind and generous to all.

Now you know the principles of success. Act on it with faith and persistence.

I have just one question for you,

"What Self Improvement Question

Are You Struggling With Today?"

Please let me know in the comments section below so I can

provide answers for you, that way you can help others as well!

Please share this podcast with those you care about!

Thanks, Don Weyant. SelfImprovementBrain.com

How To Avoid Stress!

Stress has become part of modern human life.

It is here to stay unless we start making minor changes to work around it. Stress is taxing on your body and mind and has long term effects. Stress is also said to reduce life span. But have you ever wondered why we get stressed out? What is it that we’re doing wrong?

Stress is the outcome of over work, constant thinking and burdening of the mind, and lack of rest and relaxation.

Your mind and body are like machines, they get heated up with over work, they shutdown when work is unusually heavy. What are we working so hard for? Isn’t it for money? Why do we need money? So that we can afford those things in life which give us pleasure. But if we don’t have the time to enjoy, then what’s the use of money?

We are constantly on the look out for advice and information on reducing stress.

We read up papers, browse websites, visit counselors, doctors, talk to relatives and friends. Little do we realize that the stress busters are within us! The simple solution to avoid stress is “TO BE YOUR SELF”. What we mean by this is to lead a life where you do things that you really want to. Yes, work life is important, but never let it dominate your life. You need to relax and be with family and friends. You need time to rejuvenate. You need time to enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Without them, you are only going to work more and more and increase your stress. You can take time off and do some meditation. Ask your inner self to relax when things are going way too fast.

Avoid stress by planning out your work.

Unplanned style of working usually makes one less efficient and thus increases stress. Planned working improves your efficiency and keeps you prepared for any changes. Things don’t pile up on your head. Everything seems to move smoothly. Another stress buster is a good old massage. Massage can relax your body and pull out stress.

It is important to eat well and healthy. It is also important to eat at the right time. With work related stress, some may skip a meal which affects your mind and body immediately. Make sure your diet includes fruits and vegetables and that you eat well them at regular intervals.

To keep the mind relaxed, you must have a good sleep.

A good sleep would mean about 6-8 hours for a working adult. Meditation will rejuvenate your spirits. Just as you keep your mind relaxed, you also need to tend to your body. Regular exercises make your body look in shape, it also gets your body to jump start for the whole day.

With the body and mind working in harmony, stress is the last thing that will bother you.

I have just one question for you,

"What Self Improvement Question

Are You Struggling With Today?"

Please let me know in the comments section below so I can

provide answers for you, that way you can help others as well!

Please share this podcast with those you care about!

Thanks, Don Weyant. SelfImprovementBrain.com

How to Succeed in Whatever Field

Success is a goal you undeniably want to strive for in life.

As with everyone else, you would like a piece of the good life. You would want to rise above your capacities and drive yourself to the best you can possibly reach.

In life, there are so many ways to get to your dreams.

You may want to consult Feng Shui experts. You may want to consult astrological charts. You may turn to God. You may turn to creative imagery to get what you want. However you would like to build your personal pillar of success, I believe that there are constants and absolutes. A good, solid foundation is a constant in building any sturdy edifice. Thus, it is essential that there be a strong foundation in the construction of your personal pillar of success.

Integrity, no matter what your religious beliefs are, is the bedrock of all transactions.

Why would you want to deal with things with integrity? Well, forming relationships is a must if you are in pursuit of success; and of course you would like to take good care of these relationships. Integrity builds trust, which is an essential relationship lubricant. One does not need studies to confirm that clients would go back to someone with whom they were able to deal with smoothly and stuck to his end of the deal.

The currency of life is “Quid Pro Quo”, or “give me as I would give you”.

So many business relationships have been severed because a party did not meet the end of the deal, or cheated the other of what was his due. As you sever more and more relationships through the lack of integrity, you will encourage the crumbling of your pillar of success.

It helps when you would go through life with a clear conscience and the knowledge that you have given your best to your client, or with whomever you have an interpersonal relationship. The lack of moral and emotional baggage frees you to be more productive, thus allowing you to build your pillar of success faster.

To cultivate integrity, start with the little things.

Tell the truth in the most trivial of situations. Catch yourself when you are about to tell a white lie. Be transparent in all your transactions. Give change to your customers to the very last cent. 4 Tips to Empower Yourself!

We all face hardships at some point in our lives.

Some of us own responsibility and get on with our lives while most of us blame others. When you own responsibility for yourself you empower yourself. You are the cause and your life experiences are the results in your life. You determine the direction of your life. You are in control of your life.

If you are not able to explain why your life is as it is, you are probably giving your power away to someone else, are you?

Most of us tend to blame something else or someone else or our fate for all bad experiences in our life such as abusive childhood, loss of a loved one or broken relationships. When you are not in control of yourself or your life that means you are powerless. Blaming is a disempowering emotion.

If you think by blaming others for your life you are getting away from problems you are completely wrong.

Your life problems would stay the same and recur again and again as long as you make someone else responsible for your life. You give others power to control you and your life. So your life problems would tend to stay the way they are until you take back your power and claim full responsibility for your emotions, actions and life as a whole.

True empowerment is taking responsibility for your life so that you are free to do whatever you want to do and be anything you choose to be.

Here are 4 tips to empower you:

Make your own choices - Life is full of choices and you have the freedom to choose. You learn only through trial and error. Be bold and accept the outcome of your decisions. If your choice is correct, be happy. If not do not blame yourself or others. Instead, analyze where you went wrong and correct yourself. The next time around, you may be able to make the right choices.

Practice deep breathing - If you make it a habit to practice deep breathing throughout the day, you would have clarity in your thoughts. You feel more relaxed to think clearly and make good judgments of your situations.

Feel grateful - Gratitude is something we never show for many things we enjoy in our life. Instead of cursing your problems look around you and realize how blessed you are to have nature bestow you good health, sunshine, food, good relationships, fresh air, etc. When you feel grateful for these things you are convinced that life is not bad at all.

Develop mental awareness - Observe your thoughts. Are they good or bad? Are they positive or negative? If your thoughts are positive it is good. You could act on them with positive results. What if you have negative thoughts? You could still control them if you are aware of them. Empower yourself by being aware of your good and bad thoughts.

When you deal with your own pains and pleasures you are the controller of your life. Just know that no one else could take away your power to control your life and events because you are the master of your destiny.

I have just one question for you,

"What Self Improvement Question

Are You Struggling With Today?"

Please let me know in the comments section below so I can

provide answers for you, that way you can help others as well!

Please share this podcast with those you care about!

Thanks, Don Weyant. SelfImprovementBrain.com

What Does Your Eye Contact Tell About You?

“The eyes are windows to our soul” say an English proverb.

This world is full of people and your eyes tell them a lot about you. Your eyes tell a lot about your personality. It shows if you are aggressive, soft, inviting or loving. If you notice salesmen, politicians, teachers and public speakers you would realize how effectively they use their eyes to maintain their contact with you. Eye contact is vital to effective communication.

Eye contact is a major body language factor when it comes to communication. If your eye contact is too much, you are seen as an aggressive person. On the other hand if your eye contact is too little you are seen as disinterested in the person speaking to you.

How do you use eye contact in every day life and in different situations?

Eye contact when talking to an individual – It is important to maintain eye contact with an individual during a conversation. But it could be uncomfortable if you stare intensely at her. In order to avoid this uncomfortable situation, it is good to break eye contact every 4 to 5 seconds while talking to the other person. You may look up or sideways as though you are noticing your surroundings or the decorations around you, etc. Looking down indicates you have ended your conversation.

Eye contact while listening to the other person – It would be very rude and putting off for the speaker if you just stare too hard at him or her. You could look at that person and also look around his facial features or observe around the room etc. in order to stop staring at him. Again, it is best to shift your eye contact every 4 to 5 seconds to keep the interest in the conversation without staring at the talker. You could use your head to nod as an agreement or say ‘yes,’ ‘hmm,’ or any other expression to show that you are listening so that the other person knows that you are listening to him with interest. This keeps the conversation going in a smooth manner.

Eye contact during an argument - Gazing during an argument shows strength. If you are aggressive, you wish to prove your point or your power to the opponent you gaze at him. If you look away during an argument that could mean you are not sure of your own self or about what you are saying and you give up or have lost an argument.

Eye contact while expressive love – When you like the person who is talking to you, you tend to use her whole face as your focal point. You look at her eyes, listen intently to what she is saying with a smile, raise your eyebrows or dilate your pupils to show that you are enjoying the conversation.

Lovers sometimes do not say anything to each other but share a prolonged gaze at each other. But if you were to look away or yawn while the other person is talking you may be telling her that you are not interested in talking to her.

You could use your eyes effectively to keep your relationships in a good stand.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

How to Achieve Your Lifetime Goals

You may have already gone through the process of creating a list of lifetime goals – the next step is to actually start the process of achieving them.

This involves creating a list of smaller goals that you plan to achieve over the next 25 years preparatory to reaching your lifetime goals.

After creating a 25-year plan, make a 5-year plan, then a 1-year plan, then a 6-month plan and then a 1-month plan. Get the picture? Each plan is founded and contributes to the lifetime plan.

The 3rd step is to make a To Do List that are tasks that you should do everyday. But be realistic: you might have to do your research first by reading material that will help make your daily goals more realistic. By doing these tasks, are you living a life that is worth living or do you just exist from day to day?

Stay motivated everyday by assessing your To Do List then examining your longer term plans to see if there is any need to make changes due to the experience and priorities that you have imbibed.

You may find the following general guidelines useful for this purpose:

Is each goal stated positively?

Is it precise? This allows you to measure achievement accurately.

Have you set priorities among the goals that you have listed down?

Did you write down your goals? You will be surprised how much more forceful the goals become.

Are the low-level goals small enough to achieve?

Can you control the outcome of your goals?

Are your goals realistically low?

Did you make your goals high enough to pose a challenge?

It is important to reward yourself somehow once you have accomplished a goal.

Absorb the feelings that come with goal achievement and rank your progress among all the plans that you made earlier. What is a good way to reward yourself? It depends – some people find it sufficient to treat themselves to a sweet treat. Others like bigger rewards. Just make sure the reward’s worth is proportionate to the magnitude of the task.

You will find that assessment of your goals is an ongoing process every time you achieve a goal.

If you found the goal to be much too easy to accomplish, maybe you should make the next set of goals more difficult. If the task took much too long to accomplish, maybe the goals should be a bit easier. Learning is an ongoing process as well so maybe you should change other goals too to reflect this. For example, perhaps your skills might need adjustment so this will, in turn, affect your goal setting and assessment.

Should you find it difficult to meet goals or outright fail, do not think that this completely derails your plans. So long as you learned from your performance, that is what counts.

Your maturity will be reflected in the changes you make in your goals.

Some goals can be let go if they are not suited anymore to your short term and long term plans. Do not be a slave to the goals you have set. Maintain a degree of flexibility.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Do You Need to Repackage Yourself With A New Image?

Are you sick and tired of the same, old, same old you?

Maybe it's time you take a step back and see yourself as a brand new "brand". All you need is a bit of repackaging here, a tad marketing there, and before you know it, you've sold yourself as the best thing that's ever happened to the free world!

Ever wonder how advertisers easily lure you into buying a certain product?

How they keep a brand on top of your mind every time you take a trip to the supermarket? It's all in the branding, packaging, and selling. Hey, let's face it -- in this day and age, image is everything and becoming your own "brand" is the thing.

It's just as easy to brand yourself as you would products. We talk in terms of labels. We label people, places, films, food, everything. We just have to brand something so that we can contextualize it in our heads. So, what more when we look at ourselves in the mirror? Think of yourself as a product that you just have an uncanny urge to sell.

The first step to self-branding is to start looking for your core -- your essential self, that inner element which makes you a unique product.

Now before you start experiencing brain strain, this doesn't require knowledge of rocket science. It's easy to pinpoint your personal strengths, but you shouldn't be pressured into coming up with a new, all-original image. You're simply building from what you already have.

You can borrow and refresh someone else's persona thereby making it your own, borrow bits and pieces from idols and icons to imbibe and imbue unto yourself. For instance, you can be part Condoleeza Rice, part Janet Jackson, and part Cameron Diaz. Now just imagine what a character you would become!

To become your own brand, you have to have a personal flair, a signature style.

Sadly, however, a great multitude of us morph into the bandwagon brigade while following the current trends. Instead of standing out, you disappear into the throng of clones cloaked in boring clothing.

Self-packaging is all about personal style and attitude put together in one neat bundle. Both must work in sync. You can't brand yourself as a no-nonsense worker and then dress up in colorful, revealing clothes and expect to be taken seriously. Although it doesn't hurt to be on the constant lookout for new things, to be adventurous to show your freedom of expression, you must always make sure you're comfortable with it. You can't pull off an image if it's not really you.

The bottom line is, act natural.

If you're entirely comfortable with your brand self and the way you're packaged, then there's absolutely no need to act out your new image. As long as you stay real, people will automatically be comfortable with you.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Bullies Not Allowed!

You probably think that only children suffer from bullying. Wrong -- even adults are subjected to bullying.

Consider this scenario: a group in your office wants to have casual drinks every Friday night but you don’t want to join. At first, you get cajoled into joining. If you refuse again, then you get the teasing for your ‘holier-than-thou’ attitude. If you stick by your decision, then you’ll probably get the cold or silent treatment. Worse is the guilt tripping where you’ll be accused of ruining the company morale! You’ll end up getting the pressure to join just to avoid any more of this treatment. That’s bullying.

It happens even outside the workplace.

School committees or fund raising community activities, for example, where you don’t get a choice on what you want to do. Sometimes a friend or a relative volunteer you for work without even consulting you first. In both cases, you are forced to work because the guilt trip will be worse when it comes to people you have a relationship with. That’s bullying.

A bully sees opportunities to make you feel wrong by not giving into them.

They love the superior feeling that they get when they can force somebody to do what they want. Former US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt said: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” so if you value your own self-esteem, don’t allow others to make you feel small.

Do not let anybody railroad you into something that you’re not comfortable doing.

That is the best way to stand up to a bully. Put your foot down and say ‘no, I don’t want to do this’. You can do that and you must to do that for your own self-worth. Remember that you are your own best champion.

You are worthy of respect and having respect means others should treat your stand on an issue as your own space. They shouldn’t give you grief about it. They shouldn’t force their own choices. Instead they should allow you to choose what you want and how you want it. If it involves you then you should have a say in it.

Again, standing up to a bully could be as easy as firmly disagreeing and walking away from them.

If you’re lucky, they’ll get the message and leave you alone. If that doesn’t work, the best advice is to get others to know about your stand on things and ask their support.

You would be surprised how these bullies will back down if you show them that you have a backbone. These bullies will realize that you’re not afraid to disagree with them and whatever hold they have is lost. You will finally be free.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Are You In An Addictive Relationship? It Is Time to Get Out

Addictive relationships are sometimes hard to notice.

Psychologists believe that one tends to get into addictive relationships if he or she grew up in a dysfunctional home. Many times one realizes that he or she is in an addictive relationship only after understanding it by going through it.

The addicted person needs the other person to fulfill all his needs.

As with any other addiction, there are many issues in this type of a relationship such as control, trauma, self-worth, fear, loss of a sense of self, etc. The relationship is used as a means to attempt to resolve other deeper unidentified and unresolved problems.

In an addictive relationship one person is self-centered and extremely independent.

He believes that he has the sole right to do whatever he wants to do and whenever he wants it too. His partner is dependent and other-centered. She is willing to reflect whatever her partner wants. This is how addictive relationships function.

Here are some common signs that characterize addictive relationships:

There is no balance in addictive relationships. One dominates the other partner. Most of the time one person is the giver and the other is the receiver

There is a demand for instant or immediate gratification. The dominant one expects everything to be done instantly, in the present moment. This is one of the common traits found in drug addicts and alcoholics, too

There is a great deal of control, obsession and fixation on the partner. There is a tendency to ‘make the partner change’ with an idea of fixing him or her

Dishonesty is present to a great extent in addictive relationships. Most of the time one partner tries to hide certain personal aspects, which the other should not find out. Sometimes one partner puts up false cover-ups to hide the real person

Emotional highs and lows are present in addictive relationships. The lows last longer and goes deeper than the highs when the emotional highs are plain ecstatic

Social isolation is yet another sign of addictive relationship. Nobody else – not even parents, siblings, children or close friends are allowed into their relationship. People in addictive relationships prefer to be left alone.

There is no true love. All healthy boundaries that characterize a normal healthy marriage are absent in an addictive relationship

Signs of an Addictive relationship also include a cycle of pleasure, pain, cynicism, blaming and reconnection. This cycle goes on and on until one partner tries to break free since the situations get out of control.

How does one overcome a relationship addiction? Here are a few tips to help you overcome your relationship addiction:

Make your rescue as the number one priority in your life

Identify the roots of physical and emotional abuse

Assure yourself that you are an independent soul who is in charge of your own life

Detach yourself from the emotions that bind you to the relationship

Cultivate positivism

Find support groups Consider getting professional help, if need arises.

If you are in an addictive relationship it is time you get out of it and find a life of your own.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

It is intended to bring forth a thought process to enhance you being successful with money.

So many of us wander through life thinking we have everything together. I have a fool proof way to see if you really do have it together. You will be able to tell with one question.

Are you successful with money?

I don't mean are you wealthy beyond belief. I'm talking about are you drowning in debt? (You may be and not even know it.) A good way to tell if you are in over your head is to list all your debts in a column and then all your assets and/or things that actually go up in value (like a house or an investment) in another column.

Now compare. Which column has the largest number after adding it all up? If we do this we may find that we are not as "together" as we appear to be? So the question again, "Are you having success with money?"

The answer for most of us is... [Imagine an echo with this response.]
NO! (((no no no)))

Myth: If we ignore our financial responsibilities, they will either go away or take care of themselves.

Fact: Most of America wander through life living day to day, paycheck to paycheck. Most of Americans are about two major financial setbacks away from bankruptcy and don't even smell the danger.

Myth: The more stuff we have, the more wealthy we are.

Fact: The more stuff you have the more stuff you have. In most cases, the more stuff you have, the deeper the hole is being dug to make you even more B-R-O-K-E.

Myth: If my neighbors can afford it, I can too.

Fact: Your neighbors are about 2 steps away from bankruptcy too.

Now don't misunderstand me. I'm not cutting you down or trying to make you angry. I'm just trying to get your attention. Becoming successful with your money is easier than you think. But it's difficult at the same time. Let me explain.

You have the power to pay off all your debt.

You have the power to start building gobs of wealth. You have the know-how but you just may not know you have it. You see, building wealth and paying off debt is nothing more than common sense.

Here's the common sense and the easy part. To pay off debt means you stop borrowing money (that includes using lines of credit). When you stop borrowing, you start paying higher amounts than the minimum payments. Much higher if possible.

Here's some more common sense and the hard part. Will you actually DO it? Most everyone reading this will read it, think "nice and true" but then will go out to lunch or shopping or fill up their gas tank and use a credit card. Habits are hard to break and we are marketed to thousands of times every day. Those marketing messages work.

They have been engrained in our minds so vividly and so deep that we think its okay to put our kids’ happy meal on a line of credit. See what I mean? Read that last sentence about the happy meal out loud and tell me if it registers as common sense to you.

Challenge: Go one week without using any lines of credit. When you want something, pay cash. Keep the receipts. At the end of the week, add up all your receipts and see how much you REALLY spend in one week. You may be surprised. You may be even MORE surprised on what you spent your hard earned cash on.

My wife and I have done this little exercise and it led to us building a nice little budget that we currently live by. Consequently that little budget has led to us paying off over $54,000 of debt in 18 months. Rowdy, huh?

Living successfully can seep into every area of your life. Which areas are you holding out on? Financial? Relationships? Family? Career?

Now if you're married, get with your spouse and do this stuff. Spend less. Save more. One day, you'll wake up and realize you have less money stresses and you will be in a position to do something unheard of. You'll give some away.

Won't that be fun?!

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Develop Your Own Personal Development Plan (PDP)

What is a personal Development Plan?

A personal development plan is a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to consider and improve upon his personal, educational and professional development. The individual is in control of his own development with the opportunity to monitor and steer his growth. It is simply a tool to encourage and support lifelong learning.

The process involves identifying the areas that need development, planning, executing and reviewing.

We all tend to have a mental block when it comes to addressing our own problems. Many people are afraid about taking time and thinking about their problems and solutions to those problems. A PDP would help them to solve their problems in an easy manner.

You could start developing your PDP anytime. Based on your present situation and role, you could draw a PDP that could help to prioritize the most important areas of your life that need immediate attention and concentration.

Identify areas that need progress - This is the first step towards constructing your PDP.

You need to be in tune with your current situation in life - know who you are, what you want to achieve, what you have and what you lack. You also have to be clear about what is working for you now and what is not. You need to check on what you are ignoring, too.

Many people may delay in this first step if they have problem identifying the areas of their life that needs development. If you are one of them just think about those areas that are important to you – for example, you could consider the following areas: Physical and mental wellbeing, education, spiritual pursuit, finances, recreation, relationships – personal and professional, etc. You do not need to write down everything in detail but just make a list of these areas.

This list would help you to prioritize your areas. After you identify your areas that need improvement, write down what improvements you prefer to make in each of these areas as it relates to your personal growth.

Set a timeline on each goal - Begin with your short-term goals and then proceed to long-term goals

Write down your action plan – how do you plan to go about this process?

Review your plan – is this plan workable? Would you like to make a few changes or draw a new PDP?

Implement your plan – stick to your plan and follow your schedule

Review your progress - are you following the timeline? Are you progressing accordingly?

When you develop your own PDP, follow through with action and achieve your goals you would feel like you are on top of the world. You gain more confidence that your life is in your control. You get a great satisfaction. Take one step at a time and enjoy the process. That is the key to success.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Be a Professional

You are, at any given time, a son/daughter, sibling, parent or friend to someone else and as such, you carry on a ‘role’ that suits your relationship.

When you work for someone or with someone, you are expected to put on a different persona other than these existing ones – that of being a professional. It is not as easy to be one though as being a professional doesn’t come naturally.

Being a professional means that you carry a responsibility given by the company.

It trusts you to do your job and to do it the best way that you can. Deadlines should be met. Work should be beyond reproach. Attitude and PR should always conform to the company’s standard. Keep this as a mantra whenever you have to do work regardless of your personal feelings.

Say for example, your job is to answer questions on your company products and a customer kept on badgering you with endless questions on it. You have to be patient and answer the questions until the customer is satisfied; that’s part of your job. Retain a grip on your temper and find ways to keep your cool even if you feel like bashing the person’s head with a pipe. That’s what a professional should do.

A professional should separate his/her personal feelings when it comes to business.

Our natural inclination is to try and get along with everybody but in business, teamwork and friendships don’t always come together. You must be able to separate your personal relationship from that of your function as a co-worker. Much more so, if you are a supervisor or manager.

The primary goal should always be on how the business will benefit or get affected by your work and/or your group’s work.

So you must draw a line on what you can allow as a friend from what you have to do as a professional. For example, your work is getting affected by another employee who happens to be your friend.

You might try talking to him first as a friend but if the situation does not improve and the damage is spreading, you have to bring up the matter to a superior officer. You can’t cover for him anymore; it’s not right. Remember the line of friendship and your job. That’s what a professional should do.

There will be times when you will be called to task or be given more work than what you were expecting. Being a professional means that you must not take this as an attack on you personally. It’s not you, it’s the job. Use the lesson to improve yourself instead of delving in pity. That’s what a professional should do.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Forgive and Forget and Feel Better

Is it possible to forgive someone truly from the bottom of our heart?

We could say that the ability to forgive lies in direct proportion to the degree of the harm done. Still forgiving is better than harboring enmity. When you harbor negative thoughts of revenge and harm against your enemy your enemy would not suffer from those thoughts. But you certainly would have bad effects.

Your thoughts could linger in your mind and smother positive feelings. In order to replace the poison of negativity with the pure air of positive thoughts, you should consciously take the action of forgiving.

Forgiveness is possible and it is necessary for your physical and mental health. Research shows that people who forgive show lesser depression, anger and stress and have more positive attitude in life.

Psychologists say that forgiveness help save on the wear and tear of our organs and reduce the wearing out of the immune system.

You could try these tips to forgive and forget:

Learn to calm yourself: Stress-management techniques help you resolve anger. Take a couple of deep breaths when you feel anger or pain from your past memories. Instead, think of some pleasant memories.

Do not expect an apology: If the other person perceives things differently he or she may not have even meant to hurt you. When you understand this possibility you also realize that the other person obviously is not going to apologize.

Do not expect an apology and just let go of the incident, because it's not going to come and you would be brooding over it unnecessarily. If, the other person apologizes, you must be willing and open to accept it in order to forgive and forget and put the matter behind you.

Acknowledge the benefits of forgiveness: Numerous studies have shown that people who forgive reap better health benefits, increased energy, much better appetite, and sleep. You could check health websites online that focus on this area.

Do not blame yourself: You are only human and it is natural to make mistakes in life. Accept yourself first so that you do not blame yourself. If you blame yourself forgiving poses a bigger challenge and your self-confidence is lowered.

First forgive yourself: Sometimes when you do not own or accept responsibility for a particular incident, you tend to blame the other person. In that case, you may be harboring anger at yourself, which you may be projecting on the other person.

It would be wise for you to accept responsibility and forgive yourself first. Once you forgive yourself, you would realize that the other person is not responsible and it comes easier to forgive the other person.

Forgiving makes you feel better.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Do you always try to please others in order to gain acceptance from them?

Sometimes this may lead you to unhappiness and depression. It is nice to care about other people’s feelings, but you should understand that your needs are just as important.

By giving more importance to others, you tend to ignore yourself as a special being. You could be considerate of others and at the same time you could be just yourself in order to maintain personal balance in your life.

Have you thought about ‘being yourself?’ Being yourself is empowering yourself to improve your life and career. By being yourself you build a strong foundation of your personality and attitude. You could realize or develop your full potential by being yourself. Here are some powerful tips to learn to be you:

Be a unique person. Each one of us is unique in this world. You are different from all others. You have a personality and character. Your personality has its positive and negative sides. You would feel comfortable with yourself if you accept yourself and feel safe to be who you are. Accepting yourself raises your self-confidence. So develop your individuality by accepting the fact that you are unique.

Know yourself. You would know yourself if you get familiar with yourself. You must know yourself physically, psychologically and socially and in fact you should know yourself in all aspects, in all entireties. Do you know how tall you are, how much you weigh, your color of eyes, hair, etc.? You could look in a mirror and familiarize yourself to know yourself physically. How about your disposition? Are you friendly? Are you a person who likes to be alone? What are your habits? What are your strengths and weakness? You would know yourself only by observing yourself.

Assess yourself. Once you get familiarized with yourself try to evaluate yourself. While evaluating yourself it is good to be open and honest. You could take the help of your close friend or relative to help you analyze and evaluate you. You would be your own critic of how you look, the way you walk, dress, speak, behave, etc. Being critical of yourself would help you improve upon areas where you feel you need to change or get better.

Respect Yourself. You need to respect yourself first so that you could learn to respect others. If you have some bad qualities and you are aware of it, you do not need to disrespect yourself or hate yourself. You do not need to condemn yourself of who you are. Learn to understand that no one is perfect. You could on the other hand look at the positive side of yourself and project yourself in positive ways while working on the negative aspects.

Once you understand your uniqueness, get familiar with yourself, assess and respect yourself you would be able to accept yourself. When you accept yourself you become a powerful person.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

The trick is to have the willpower to drop whatever is not urgent and important in your day.

So how do you do the choosing?

First, get a pen and paper. Or open your computer’s spreadsheet or word processing program.

Make categories: “urgent and important”, “important but not urgent”, “urgent but not important”, and “not important nor urgent”.

Under “important and urgent,” write down what you need to do now that is of high importance. The kind that if you don’t do tonight, you’ll get fired, or worse, your wife will make you sleep outside the house. Make sure that these are really important, that not doing this would have a big consequence. No, it does not mean the task of having to buy your wife a can of Pringles in the middle of the night. Unless she’s pregnant and you don’t want to wake up next to the dog.

Next, under “important but not urgent,” write what is of great importance to you but you can do tomorrow or next week.

Under “urgent but not important,” write down what you want to do today, but not really essential to survive another (normal 24-hour) day.

Finally, under “not important nor urgent,” write what you honestly could live without.

Next go through your list.

For the ones under Category 1 (urgent and important), see how much you could squeeze today, with enough breathing space and time to sleep for 6-8 hours. Budget your day around that, and make sure you stick to that schedule. If your day still runs over, this means you need to choose some tasks and schedule them the next day. If it’s not on a deadline anyway, do so.

For Category 2 (important but not urgent), schedule a maximum number of 5 tasks from this list to do daily, with the task’s deadline in mind. Make sure to make some allowance for Murphy’s Law (everything that can go wrong will go wrong), if it’s a really important task.

For Category 3 (urgent but not important), if a task on the list says “send email greetings to mom-in-law (ordered by wife) today,” do it after everything else in Category 1 has been done. Unless mom-in-law’s birthday is today and not emailing will mean a World War, that is.

Finally for Category 4 (not important nor urgent): Yes, you can live without checking Facebook (or your blog or whatever) today. So turn off your computer, take a bath, snuggle next to the wife, and rest well. For tomorrow, you’re doing another Category 1 list again.

Simple, right? Now, all you need is the willpower to stick to the list and learn to realize that not checking Facebook today will not result in severe stomach ulcers.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

How to Plan Your Life

Some people value spontaneity. Others crave structure.

Still, it would help if you would go through life with direction, and with goals. Goals help in guiding your choices. Purpose underlines everything you do.

So you’re in a new stage in your life. Either you’ve graduated from high school or college, decided to move on from a suffocating job or just basically in a new stage in your life. You want to plan out the steps you want to take now, and you want to make the best choices that life has to offer.

Get a pen and paper; we have lots of writing to do.

On that piece of paper, put a heading in the center: Mission/Vision.

Take some time to think about this. Take hours. Days. Weeks. It doesn’t matter, but give yourself a deadline. When you have thought it over, write down what you would want to achieve by the end of your life. What do you want to build your life around? Is it to attain certain educational milestones? Earn a certain amount of money? Be a philanthropist? State it under your Mission/Vision. This will be the center theme of your life. You can change it any time you want, but the entire list will be built around this.

Under Mission/Vision, divide the paper into two equal halves. One side will go to Short-term Goals. The other side will go to Long-term Goals.

Under the Short-term Goals, write down everything you want to get done within five years. Under Long-term Goals, write down the milestones you want throughout your life.

In the Short-term Goals, assign the deadlines by which you want these goals done. In the Long-term Goals, assign your age by which you would want to achieve these milestones.

Now rewrite the entire list in chronological order, then examine your list. Commit to memory your Short-term Goals, and the Long-term Goals you have for this year. If you have trouble remembering your list, use a calendar. A paper one will do, but you can also use a computer program if you have one, or an application in whatever handheld gadget you have (a PDA or cellular phone with reminder or calendar applications would do fine).

The purpose of this exercise is for you to have a visual representation of your goals.

Having a visual representation of your goals heightens the chances that you will commit to seeing them done. Knowing that you have concretized your plans gives you more resolution to stick to these.

But even if you have your plans on paper, you will need to remember that you have to be flexible. Life is fluid and seldom goes according to plan. But if you really want to reach your goals, despite the shifts in life, you will always revert to your “blueprint” (the paper outline you just made).

Your Mission/Vision, as said earlier, will be the theme driving your choices.

This will be the anchor when storms rock your life’s boat. The chain links of your anchor will be your personal values, principles, and your growth in character.

It would help if you would keep a diary to outline the life lessons you’ve learned, and your driving values and principles. When faced with dilemmas, revert to these. It may not make the problems go away, but they will help in making decisions, especially if these decisions tempt you to compromise.

Sail through the sea of life, and remember, you have an anchor when storms come your way.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Effective Time Management Techniques

Do you always find yourself doing numerous tasks at the last minute?

Does the sight of voluminous paperwork make you feel swamped, eventually leading you to put them off for "just a few more minutes"? Does the word deadline unfailingly give you panic attacks?

If you answered in the affirmative to any of the questions mentioned above, then you are undeniably guilty of wasting a precious resource - time. Like most people, you may get a rush out of beating the clock and submitting your work, although sloppily done, on time.

This chronic battle waged during crunch time invariably leads to the ubiquitous raccoon eyes and zits popping uncontrollably all over your face. And as you continue to cope with the nerve-wracking pressure of accomplishing so much in so little time, your once gentle personality mutates into a hideous monster.

While there may be no getting around job orders, here are some essential tips of managing your time efficiently:

1. Write a to-do list.

Keep a record of all your tasks such as school assignments, job presentations and household chores. There is something about the written word that makes it harder to ignore. This list is also an easy way for you to keep track of what needs to be done and when the due dates are approaching.

2. Prioritize.

Once all the tasks are listed already, prioritize them according to their sense of urgency. Arrange the tasks whether they are due in the next few days, weeks or months. It only makes sense that a presentation due tomorrow will be given more importance than one that is due a month from now.

3. Act. Do not procrastinate.

All your dreams, plans and goals are worthless if you don't act on them. Your ideas, no matter how lofty, will not come to fruition if you remain rooted to where you are. While it is true that you have a tendency, like the rest of nature, to follow the line of least resistance in surviving this challenging world, you can evolve and turn out to be way stronger than you once were. Say goodbye to stalls. Stop making alibis. Kick those innumerable excuses that hinders you from becoming a better person. Act now.

4. Tackle the toughest assignments first.

When you have two or more projects to finish, try to accomplish the more difficult one first before proceeding to the next. In that way, your mind will be clearer and you will get through it more quickly.

5. Remove distractions.

In order to maximize your time, you should remain focused on your tasks. This means that you have to minimize, if not totally remove, all the distractions surrounding you. Turn off the television, lower the volume of the beat blaring from the radio, tell your little siblings to stop screaming at each other and keep your mobile phone outside your reach. Do not try sneaking at your incoming text messages and tell your parents that you won't be receiving any calls for a few hours.

6. Use rewards to mark your progress.

A tireless 24/7 machine you are most definitely not, so don't forget to indulge in life's little pleasures. You can set a contract with yourself that after finishing a certain work, you can pamper yourself with a manicure or a short stroll around your neighborhood. For harder tasks, you can always treat yourself to a whole body massage or foot reflexology.

Always remember that every project ticked off that list brings you one step closer to a more manageable schedule.

SelfImprovementBrain.com

Brazen Up Your Fears! Defy your fears and be free!

Admit it. You are afraid. There are things that give you goose bumps, as well as make your body tremble, your palms sweaty, and your heart beats faster. These things do not necessarily mean to be real because oftentimes, you fear things that are mere creations of your ingenious imagination. Fears or anxiety, according to Freud, is a basic emotion that influences everyone's life from earliest childhood. This influence shapes your life, as you grow old. Usually, the things that you fear in your childhood are still the same things that you fear even when you get older. This only suggests that it is never easy to conquer fears especially if you don’t have a willing heart and a focused mind. Fears vary. Some of you may fear imagined objects; some fear real things and activities; and some have particular dreads (phobias). While there are some who are weird enough that they just suddenly lose out of control of their actions and reasons. You commonly know these startling out-of-the-blue-attacks of intense fear or terror as panic disorders. These usually crop up when we face danger, but sometimes, they occur without obvious reason. If that happens, you have to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist for you may be having a mental illness. Your doctor may recommend to you effective treatments like psychotherapy and behavior therapy. Your fears, as mentioned by experts, are learned response, but they can be unlearned. Doctors may expose you to your respective fears that may take place in real life or in your imagination. While there are those who will encourage you to talk with others who have the same fears as you have. Yet the best and the most effective therapy in treating fears are not those that doctors can offer. Even the most erudite doctor (may he be a graduate of am internationally acclaimed medicine school, or has received prestigious awards) cannot give you this kind treatment because no one but YOURSELF can only give you this. No one but yourself can cure your fears. If you are unwilling to be cured, then your fears will continue to linger. They will never leave your side, shocking you day by day, even in the quietness of your sleep. What do you have to do then? Here are some advice given by people who succeeded in defying their fears: “They are all in your mind. Control your mind and you’ll be able to control your fears.” — Karen, 20. “Pray. It’s the best shield when you are frightened.” — Martin, 16. “Just be bold. As Amy Tan said: Anything that cannot kill you will only make you stronger. Live with that kind of thinking.” — Rom, 21. “Occupy your mind with happy thoughts. If you are happy, you’ll forget the things that you are dreadful of.” — Sarah, 32. Your “healing” generally depends on you. It’s your choice whether you want to be cured of your fears or not. In making the decision to defeat your fears, you have to prepare your heart and mind, for their full participation is most needed. If your hearts and minds are not willing, your fears will not go away. Freedom from your fears lies in your hands and in your hands alone. Defy your fears and be free!

Are You A Mr. Assertive Or A Mr. Aggressive?

One of the most essential skills needed in handling people and situations is assertiveness. You are assertive if you are clear in letting others know about your expectations without any anxiety or hesitation. This is one area of development to be focused on when coaching executives. Many in management sectors confuse ‘assertiveness’ with ‘aggressiveness.’

What are some of the differences between assertiveness and aggressiveness?

If you are assertive you ask people of what you want directly and openly. There is an air of reassurance and confident around you at all times. While you do ask for your wants and preferences, you make sure to respect other people’s rights and you do not expect others to know what is on your mind without expressing yourself.

If you are aggressive you try to get what you want in someway or the other and you may often cause bad feelings in others. You may resort to different tactics - request, beg, entice, persuade, manipulate or threaten as your means to get what you want. In the process you do not respect others rights or feelings. You do not even look into situations that may get both sides what they want, such as win-win situations.

Aggressive behavior might help one to achieve immediate or short-term results but the longer outcome is a steady decline in performance due to unpopularity and non- cooperation from others who are often victims of aggressive or bullying behavior. With the result the aggressive person ends up being over stressed and depressed. Mr. Aggressive is often not supported by his colleagues and is therefore unable to reach his goals in his career.

Mr. Assertive is able to lead, direct and motivate without much of huff and puff. Since he already is clear about what he wants and is able to convince others without hurting their sentiments and feelings he is popular among employees and he gets good cooperation from his colleagues.

An assertive person is able to give unequivocal direction and leadership through his positive motivational messages to his team members. As a result he is able to achieve his goals sooner and rises up the corporate ladder easily.

Body language is an important factor of assertiveness. You could keep the following in mind if you would like to develop assertiveness:

A warm smile or a friendly expression shows respect to your listener

Maintaining eye contact shows that you are actively listening to the other person

A relaxed and straight stance should be adopted during communications

Your hands should be kept in an open position to show candidness.

Assertiveness in appropriate situations is bound to win you friends and supporters in your career and in society.

SelfImprovementBrain.com
