Ep38, Event Sourcing on the SAFE Network
With the SAFE Network Alpha 2 release progressing forward with interfaces stablizing, and a stable network to test against, application developers are starting to see and begin exploiting what is possible with such a network when it is ultimately in place. Today we have a very interesting talk with Edward Holst, Software Architect and Lead Developer for a small fintech firm in Sweden. In his spare time he has begun to explore the guts of the SAFE Network and see the huge advantages SAFE will have for hosting the type of Event-Sourced databases he is familiar with. We explore that area of tech, as well as getting a feel for where SAFE is at currently from the perspective of a seasoned developer. ####Music Music for this episode: *Arrival*, an original piece composed and performed by Nicholas Koteskey of Two Faced Heroes ####Links [Safenet Forum](https://safenetforum.org) [Safenet Forum thread on Edward's EventStore project](https://safenetforum.org/t/introducing-safe-eventstore-event-sourcing-database/17275) [Edward's EventStore github repository](https://github.com/oetyng/SAFE.EventStore) [MaidSafe site](http://maidsafe.net)

TC 20, Decentralization and Biochemistry
In this fourth installment of The Hemp Corner, we set out to better understand the amazing biochemical relationship between the human species and the cannabis plant. To get very far we have to break out some understanding of biochemical interactions in general and how they influence the human experience. Our guest, Dr. Jim Laurenzano, is a medical doctor who not only has a deep technical knowledge, but his 35 years of striving to engage his patient's understanding and full participation in their own treatment has given him an excellent ability to help others grasp a useful picture of what's going on, in terms they can understand. We use that skill to uncover some fascinating insights into not only cannabis, but the way life works on a biochemical level. Those who are into cryptographic and networking technology will find some deep, and perhaps useful, parallels. #### Music Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. #### Links [*A Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World*](https://www.amazon.com/Botany-Desire-Plants-Eye-View-World/dp/0375760393/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494435482&sr=8-1&keywords=a+botany+of+desire) Recommended book about interactive relationships between various plant species and humans [*Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs*](https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Scream-First-Last-Drugs/dp/1620408910/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494435555&sr=8-1&keywords=chasing+the+scream) Recommended book about the roots and progression, and damage of the "War on Drugs", and prohibition in general [Johann Hari TED Talk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY9DcIMGxMs)

TC 19, Balancing Trust and Trustlessness
In wrapping up my discussion of Tezos with CTO Arthur Breitman, the theme of "Trust: where and how much to bestow it" is central enough to make it the theme of the episode, though we cover a lot of other aspects of Tezos and blockchain tech in general with a bit more technical depth than the last episode. TC 18, Tezos and Scalable Decentralized Governance
> >**Governance** - the act or activity of looking after and making decisions about something -- Merriam-Webster.com Those wary of the complexity, inequities and corruption of govern-**ment** tend to also be wary of the idea of govern-**ance**. But there's no way around it: Governance (by the above definition) happens one way or the other, because otherwise **stuff** just **happens**. Not an optimum scene, for sure. Arthur Breitman, CT0 and lead developer of Tezos, started thinking about this years ago, and started developing Tezos as a way to account for the inevitable need to adapt the means of decision-making and action within a decentralized cryptocurrency environment. In this episode we try to take a simpleton's approach to examining Bitcoin and related currencies in a way most anyone can follow, and then examine the factors that need to be managed in any decentralized cryptocurrency system, and start to examine how Tezos deals with these points. I say "start," because we could only get so far in one hour. There's more to come, but you don't want to miss this one, for sure. #### Music Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. #### Links [Tezos site](https://tezos.com) [Other interviews with Arthur](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tezos) [Tezos Position Paper](https://tezos.com/pdf/position_paper.pdf) [Tezos Whitepaper](https://tezos.com/pdf/white_paper.pdf) [Current Update Info on differences since above papers](https://medium.com/@arthurb/diff-2014-tezos-2017-tezos-1cb566cca892)

TC 17, Decentralization and Agronomy
IN THIS EPISODE > **Agronomy** is the science and technology of producing and using plants for food, fuel, fiber, and land reclamation. -- Wikipedia Co-host Michael Bright and I present the third in the Hemp Corner series. Those used to hearing mostly about internet and cryptocurrency tech may wonder why we're exploring such a mundane and seemingly distant subject of agriculture. As this series goes forward, we will definitely be exploring the direct interfaces between internet tech, cryptocurrency and the agronomy of hemp, but to start, we explore how the nature of hemp works towards a common goal: Decentralization. Starting from the acquisition and handling of seeds, a whole set of new agricultural, social and industrial options open around hemp, options which are largely unique to this fascinating Who should be interested? - Those who want to see "green" solutions. - Those concerned with building community. - Those who wish to prosper and see others prosper. - Those who wish to empower individuals, families and communities. - Those who want to see undue control move away from huge corporations. - Those wishing to increase individual freedom of economics and finance. TC 16, Will Work for Hemp
IN THIS EPISODE This is the second of what we're calling The Hemp Corner of Technology & Choice. After doing a high-altitude overview of hemp and cannabis in the first Hemp Corner, we thought it would be a good idea to work at straightening out all the scrambled thinking about cannabis and hemp that has been brought about by nearly eight decades of prohibition and contradictory propaganda. To do that we called in the big guns. Joy Beckerman-Maher is a 25 year veteran of laboring for hemp. As we discover in the interview, that's a much more literal statement than it might at first appear. Joy will (and did) call one down for calling her an "expert" because she has been in the trenches, dealing with the governmental and legal sides of the industry as well as all the production and educational sides. However we decide to label her, SHE KNOWS HER STUFF. This interview was a blast, and took some turns that caught me by surprise. I think we achieved what we set out to do, though. TC 15, Ryan X. Charles, Working to Give You Yours
IN THIS EPISODE The hope of Bitcoin enabling fast, frictionless micropayments is one of the promises of the technology that has excited us all. But it's been a long time coming and, especially in Bitcoin, it has seemed a long way off. Enter Ryan X. Charles and "Yours." Yours is a social media platform that will enable true micropayments that can get everyone that contributes value to the platform to get paid, proportional to the value given. Not a new idea, but Yours is about to prove it will happen. Ryan says the tech is solid and will allow Bitcoin micropayments within the Yours ecosystem without changing the Bitcoin core code, and is soon going into public testing on the TestBitcoin network. TC13, The Tech of Hemp, Our Estranged Intimate
An "Intimate" is someone or something that is not quite Self, but does not have the feel of Other. IN THIS EPISODE We're very, very jazzed to be introducing a new series within the Technology and Choice podcast, dedicated to the technology and choices of Cannabis, a plant species which encompasses so very much more than just its psychoactive variety, marijuana. Co-Host Michael Bright of The Hemp Connoisseur Magazine joins John for this periodic series, to assist in exposing the intimate relationship that this plant has had with Mankind for millennia, how that relationship has been broken, and the technical and social aspects of reunification on into the future. We just get cranking here by doing a whirlwind romp through a small fraction of the plant's uses and benefits in such areas as agriculture, medicine, manufacturing, and oh so much more. Future episodes will track innumerable aspects of the biology and technology of all things cannabis. It's almost not at all about getting high--not to lessen the importance of that aspect, mind you (we'll definitely go there in due course). Be prepared for ongoing fascination . . . and an up-swelling of your own enthusiasm, we're betting. MUSIC Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. TC 12, Influence Says It All
IN THIS EPISODE What is the most basic action in the universe? Influence. Technology is all about better directing influence, whether it be influence on the environment, the materials at hand, electronics, software, or people. And there is a lot of technology on the nature of influence and persuasion amongst people. In this episode, we look at how influence is the most fundamental action of life, and why it's a good idea to not be ignorant of the technologies of personal and social influence. TC08, Porcfest Potpourri
IN THIS EPISODE A few days at the Porcupine Freedom Festival in New Hampshire netted a load of wonderful connections, some very interesting insights and a few very relevant interviews, from the perspective of the technology and choice pair. First up in this episode is Sam Patterson, Chief Operating Officer of OB1, the company developing the Open Bazaar protocol and ecosystem. Sam shares some insights about the ideals of peer-to-peer commerce, shares some very encouraging news about the current real-world successes of the platform, and shares exciting news about the near future, which will make the ecosystem tons better still. Next we spend some quality time with Larken Rose discussing his very ambitious and fabulously important project, The Mirror. This could be one of the most important projects in existence for opening human potential, so listen up and consider pitching in. Finally, we speak with Jeremy Kauffman of LBRY (pronounced "library"). With their imminent launch of the LBRY platform, listeners are in a unique position to get in on the ground floor of what I found to be one of the most exciting practical applications of blockchain technology to come along recently. Ep32, David Irvine Speaks
IN THIS EPISODE David Irvine, Founder and lead developer of MaidSafe has faced a huge workload over the last couple of years, moving the SAFE Network towards launch. So much so that he hasn't recorded an in-depth interview in over two years. That changed today. In this episode he finally speaks--quite a lot, actually. Our two hour interview covers much of what has been going forward with the SAFE Network, the technical barriers, some of the huge breakthroughs, the community, and a lot more. Most of the second half of the interview deals with matters relating to a blog post being published at about the same time as this podcast (linked below), making full community disclosure about planned actions to reinforce capital availability to accelerate development and community outreach, a likely source of lively discussion on the SAFE Network Forum. Aside from all the wonderful data, perspectives and strategy disclosures, the interview is a great dose of David Irvine in person. TC06, Chadrick Mahaffey on Crowd Founding Principles
#### In this Episode Chadrick Mahaffey is a software developer and fan of the SAFE Network. For years he's been working to understand organization principles so as to evolve a way that people can "Labor in Freedom." In this interview, we go into the background of how he arrived at what he now calls The Crowd Found Hub, a system using smart contracts and crypto tokens to allow for a very open and fruitful way to organize group activities in a completely voluntary way, but with a way of rewarding value created by participants. Could change a lot of the way we think about how we "have to" do things. #### Magic Word Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. The Decentralization Itch
Why does decentralization as a concept motivate so many people so powerfully and often so irrationally? I wrote this article as part of the process of dissecting the anatomy of my own itch regarding decentralization. Enjoy this recording and visit the written article at http://www.safecrossroads.net/articles/the-decentralization-itch-3/. Thanks to Adam B. Levine and the Let's Talk Bitcoin network for original encouragement to record this. The track you hear was edited by Adam and was released as part of Episode 233 (https://letstalkbitcoin.com/blog/post/lets-talk-bitcoin-233-recursive-iterations) of the Let's Talk Bitcoin podcast. Following it the postscript to the written article: Postscript: I’ve been podcasting and writing about the SAFE Network for a few months now, and the inspiration for this article kept eating away at the back of my brain the whole time, till I finally put it on the page and worked with it till it was done. It was only after I’d finished it up and I was telling a friend about the subject matter that a further revelation hit me: The inspiration driving me (and others, I think) to bring the SAFE Network to fruition is my understanding that the technology underlying the network’s design is built from the inside out with respect for Self granted to the individual user by default. That in itself is an immensely powerful thing. Add to it the fact that the technology promises to be superior in so many other ways in terms of speed, efficiency, scalability and more, and it’s hard to contemplate the effect it will have on humanity. As I say, this is an afterthought to the article, which easily stands on its own. But I take this opportunity to encourage you to explore Project SAFE for yourself. The ramifications of the SAFE Network, and the open source technology it makes available to mankind for other applications, are more significant than I know how to communicate. Ep29, Class X, Graduation Review, All Invited
####In this Episode#### Come one, come all, to the last planned class of the SAFE Network School. We do a high-level overview of what we know about the SAFE Network in a way that even parents, friends and family of the proud graduates will be warmed with what they learn, and be proud of those who have worked so hard to get closer to the bare metal of this elegant technology. Graduates will be reminded of all that they have learned by noting the intricate details that have been artfully avoided in this presentation for broad consumption. This is your graduation test, students. This is not just rah-rah, either. Ep28, SAFE Class IX, Let's Grok Safecoin
**grok**-- [Martian] literally meaning "to drink" but taken to mean "to understand at a deep, intuitive level." (from the novel Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein, a story about a human raised by Martians) ####In this Episode#### Having explored the SAFE Network from end to end through our School series so far, in this Class we are finally ready let safecoin help spread our senses out through the SAFE Network as a whole. We can now begin to *grok* SAFE in fullness. Now can we embrace some key aspects of the network that we've not yet been able to fully appreciate. We clarify and break down the types of data on the SAFE Network and start of get a grip on what can be done with them. We follow the life cycle of a safecoin and define clearly what a safecoin actually IS. We revisit part of an earlier interview with Benjamin Bollen, who helps us understand the handling of data types in network as a whole, and what the connection and routing software libraries make available to other distributed network developers. And finally we hear (indirectly) from David Irvine about the developments discussed in this class and what they let developers start working with, to take the SAFE Network (and other projects it will surely spawn) up to and then beyond what the current internet allows--except decentralized, economical and truly secure from the start. Very stimulating stuff. We've hacked through lots of details. Ep26, The Safe Exchange
####In this Episode#### History in the making. Exaggeration? You be the judge. This last week Daniel DaBek announced the release of the whitepaper on the new Safe Exchange. More than just a protocol, it is the core tool kit necessary to establish a decentralized contract marketplace, via which anyone will be capable of exchanging with anyone, anywhere, according to prearranged contractual conditions. We discuss the current crowdsale, designed to raise the modest capital needed to finish development, but also to distribute governance of the exchange a much as possible amongst the future users of it. This is one you really don't want to miss. It will change your vision of how things can be when "Free Trade" is more than just a political buzzword. ####Magic Word#### Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. ####In this Episode#### Class V of the School of the SAFE Network brings clarity on another component of the SAFE Network configuration which is critical to the autonomous functioning of the network. We explore some of the problems and solutions of peer-to-peer networking, and explore some of the key terminology necessary to communicating about it. We really only scratch the surface enough to better understand what the SAFE Network needs to accomplish to operate properly, but the miracles regularly performed all the time in providing us all with the connectivity we've come to expect become more appreciated in view of an understanding of the wild and amorphous Internet environment. We have a talk with Peter Jankuliak, lead maintainer of the SAFE Network connection library, on topics related to today's class, and progress on the current technical sprint. ####Magic Word#### Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. Ep21, SAFE School IV, Reaching Bedrock
*In this Episode* In Class IV of the SAFE Network School we get down to bedrock on one of the most important aspects of the SAFE Network. We have loads of fun, actually. It's back to school for sure, but also has a bright gem of entertainment to help bring the lesson home. With this material we are able to get our feet on solid ground on not only how the network organizes and administers so many intricate actions, but we see the foundations of the very different, but very powerful method of establishing consensus and truth within the SAFE Network. Please understand that the data dealt with here may lack the full clarity it should if you have not become quite familiar with the material in the previous SAFE Network School Classes. Going over the relevant sections of the SAFE Network Wiki and these podcasts and referenced material more than once is recommended for best comprehension. The technology underlying the SAFE Network contains a number of new innovations/discoveries, all in play at once. Understanding does not yield well to snapshots. ####Magic Word#### Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. ####In this Episode#### In Class III of the SAFE Network School we break down some of the underlying computer technology needed to get a better grip on why the SAFE Network can do what it is designed to do. We take a closer look at the Vault structure and get an understanding of what a distributed hash table is about, and much more. Find out what David Irvine has to say about how to share understanding the technology of the SAFE Network, from his years of experience telling others about it. Come along as we start to peel apart the "secrets" of how the SAFE Network is designed and why it is so powerful. There are no secrets, actually. It just takes a little patience, perhaps some repetition. But it's worth it! Unless you are already quite familiar with the SAFE Network, technically, it is recommended that you listen to the other Classes in this series first. Reading and following along with the SAFE Network Wiki (linked below) is also a great idea. ####Magic Word#### Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. Ep19, SAFE Network School, Class Two, Going Deeper
####In this Episode#### Class Two of the SAFE Network School takes us deeper. We probe down and start to pull apart the great intricacy of the SAFE Network by closely examining the key elements that make it work. But not too fast or overwhelmingly. You'll be surprised how understandable it is when guided by a Simpleton who has already done most of the brain-warping exploration, so that you don't have to warp YOUR head so much. Come along as we start to peel apart the "secrets" of how the SAFE Network is designed and why it is so powerful. There are no secrets, actually. It just takes a little patience, perhaps some repetition. But it's worth it! Since the SAFE Network is being built on a very different combination of fundamentals than has ever been used before and because it is so intricate, it's not possible to just wade in and get a full picture of it without some work. This is especially true because the network is still in development and so can't be used and learned by experience, either. Your host and others have been expending a lot of effort behind the scenes to improve the documentation and make it more accessible to everyone. That project is very far from satisfactorily complete, but good progress has been made. I am also aware that there are a lot of people like myself who have the time to listen, but not to sit down and study. Also a lot of people learn best be audio input. As we go forward, these School podcasts will not stand alone very well. Understanding of later ones will depend on earlier information and insights. But that's okay. It's the only way to go deeper. I also see this approach making listener participation much more inviting. I look forward to feedback, questions and other input, and will do my best to integrate everything into a great experience for all. ####Magic Word#### Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. Ep18, SAFE Network School, Class One
####In this Episode#### We're happy to announce the opening of the Simpleton's School of the SAFE Network. Since the SAFE Network is being built on a very different combination of fundamentals than has ever been used before and because it is so intricate, it's not possible to just wade in and get a full picture of it without some work. This is especially true because the network is still in development and so can't be used and learned by experience, either. Therefore, the effort of this podcast up to this point has been to share and create interest in the SAFE Network, hopefully enough to inspire folks to take the time to dig in and study the subject more closely. That's been a fine approach, as far as it goes. Looking at various functions and news, and exploring the people of the network has been valuable, but after a while it's not enough. So here is what we are going to do: The SAFE Crossroads Podcast hereby opens its own SAFE Network School. We'll see where all it goes but, to start, the SAFE Network Wiki is a great basic overview of the network, with a lot of detail that will help. The other facility is the Simpleton himself, who is not a geek but has spent many, many hours interfacing data about the network directly, on the SAFE Network community forum, etc., and has accumulated insights which others should find useful. Your host will be reading the wiki aloud, stopping to comment, cross-reference, look up glossary and other definitions, and generally working through the basics of the SAFE Network making them as accessible as possible. You'll get to see where the Simpleton has outstanding question, too, because I'll be open as we explore this together. We'll still be doing other types of podcasts as appropriate. But if you see the distinctive SAFE Network School logo, you'll know you're back in class. So, let's see how this goes! ####Magic Word#### Listen for the magic word, and submit it to your LetsTalkBitcoin.com account to claim a share of this week's listener award distribution of LTBcoin. Ep13, Rich Beer And The Crypto Show
####In this Episode#### This week chronicles a mini adventure I had trying to connect with others in the south Texas area who might want to form a meet-up regarding the SAFE Network. It started with a post on the SAFE Network Community Forum (https://forum.safenetwork.io), on to connecting with and appearing on The Crypto Show(www.thecryptoshow.com), and back to an interview with the Project SAFE member who suggested The Crypto Show connection, Rich Beer. All in all, it was an interesting adventure and I hope you'll enjoy some of the results. Ep05, Tim Coomber on the New Renaissance
We are delighted to present a recap of important aspects of the SAFE Network ecosystem and why they are important, followed by a great interview with Tim Coomber of Scotland, one of the hosts of the LIFE IS PEOPLE videocast on Google Hangouts/Youtube. We explore the subject of how the SAFE Network--through the application N99 (Network 99)--will allow content creators to be compensated by the network itself, whether consumers pay for their content or not! This is a game changer for creative people, especially artist, musicians, writers, gamers, news publishers, and many other types of people who create content that people find valuable. News The SAFE Crossroads Podcast is now accepting submissions for intro/outro and bridge music for use on a rotating basis on the podcast. If used, the artist(s) will receive attribution both verbally on the podcast and in all show notes. Additionally, proportional to the use, when music is used on a podcast, the artist will receive a percentage of the LTBcoin distribution awarded by the LTB network for that episode.
