Sep 20, 2012 with Gingy and Bordello
Things started coming together for Gingy & Bordello in 2010 when their first original production was discovered and championed by the likes of Simian Mobile Disco and Brodinski. Vaporizer was eventually released on UK-based imprint 'This Is Music' that summer before Bordello went to work as an intern for TIGA'S Turbo Recordings. The label A&Rs found in Bordello more than just a fresh-faced, bagel-toasting yes man, but a legitimately talented DJ and producer. The label made moves by signing 'Body Acid', released in Fall 2011, which featured two stellar remixes by the mighty KiNK. The release clocked high on the hype radar with support from the likes of industry big-shots SOULWAX and EROL ALKAN claimed 'Right now, for me, its simply the best club record out there. If this can't rescue a dance floor then humanity is doomed...' Playlist and more bio at http://www.artofbeatz.org/site/index.php/aobsite/showpage/september_20th_2012/

Sep 6, 2012 with No UFO's
While Konrad Jandav's pseudonym may have in fact taken its inspiration from a landmark techno record by Juan Atkins, this Vancouver artist isnt one to be limited by strict genre considerations. His compositions are emancipated explorations into krautrock, drone, and noise. After a few releases on Spectrum Tools, his first EP, Mind Controls the Flood, came out in 2011 on the Public Information imprint. Its a musical jaunt featuring seven hazy and highly immersive titles, full of psychedelic and synthetic melodic friction. After over a decade as a house music lover and supporter of the local scene, Beaubien was born earlier this year, when Lila Bujold started DJing. Lila grew up in Vancouver and was first exposed to dance music when Jay Tripwire let her into her first rave at the age of 15. She was so excited by the music, the dancing and the people that she partied sober, literally high on life. If you dont believe her, just ask... Jun 14, 2012 with Colin Hargreaves
Colin Hargreaves was born in Montreal in 1974 and adopted by newly arrived parents from England. Enriched with music, his father was a trained musician who played harpsichord and piano. Growing up, Colin also learned to play recorder, piano and clarinet. It was clear from an early age that Colin liked to engage himself with an audience, competing in local Kiwanis music festivals and performing at school talent shows and church functions. Colin always enjoyed his family visits to England, also for the exposure to the variety of music and radio stations not readily available in his small hometown of Deep River, Ontario. At 14, the family moved to the city of Ottawa where Colin soon was immersed into new underground sounds. House and Techno, music one could only hear on University radio or at 'All-Ages' nightclubs that featured Disc Jockeys and went all-night long. 'Club Zinc' and 'Cafe Deluxe' were among the earliest clubs in the area Colin enjoyed in this fresh scene of the early 90's... DE is a way of doing. It is a way of doing everything you do. DE simply means doing whatever you do in the easiest most relaxed way you can manage which is also the quickest and most efficient way, as you will find as you advance in DE. The DE Kollektiv is an artistic DJ collective whose fundamental purpose is to bring a global audience a fresh organic electronic sound in a way that uplifts, provides solace and facilitates community in the most minimal and accessible way possible. We feel incredibly privileged to be able to create an environment that supports and fosters local talent and promotes an engaging and inspiring musical experience. We have promoted and presented a number of successful events in Vancouver over the last 3 years. Because of the popularity of these events, we began to realize we had a significant bank of DJ sets which we felt could be rebroadcast. As such, we founded our radio station DE Radio as a site which provides DJs the opportunity to have their sets on constant rotation and our community to share in the musical experience again... Mar 22, 2012 with Cravo E Canela (Miguel Graa and Trevor Walker)
Montreal producer Miguel Graa (pronounced grass-a) has been turning heads for years with his unique production and Djing style. But Miguel Graa is no overnight success... As a choirboy in his native Portugal, Miguel discovered his musical talent at an early age and explored it by studying the guitar and developing his vocal skills. His passion for music has turned into a lifelong pursuit. Whether producing, remixing, DJing or selling records, Miguel has been involved with the recording industry for over a decade. After playing in a band in the 80s Miguel began producing his own material. In 1991, he produced his first club hit: There 4 U by M.G. Feat. Stephenson. It was awarded the supreme sign of recognition from the scene at the time by being bootlegged in New York City. There 4 U charted heavily in the U.K., played on regular rotation on Kiss 100 FM... Credited as the primary catalyst and pioneer of the soul jazz and house movement in Ottawa, Trevor has been involved in the industry for the last 15 years. Walker brings a surrealness to his sets that take listeners on a journey. Jazz remains the binding influence behind the music he plays, giving him the flexibility to incorporate and investigate different sounds in his sets. A stalwart on the radio waves until just recently, Trevor hosted long running radio shows at both Ottawa and Carelton Universities... Mar 8, 2012 with Alleycat
2010 ended on a high note for Alley Cat with her label Kokeshi's 4th release making huge waves. Various accolades include winning Best Remix of 2010 (Dubstepforum) for the Kryptic Minds Remix of Lung's 'Afterlife' , but also larger labels have taken notice with both Get Darker and Ministry of Sound featuring the track on massive compilations. Currently the MoS compilation is #8 in the UK album sales chart. For having started Kokeshi less than 2 years ago, Alley Cat has found the label it's own sound through the Kokeshi ((pod)) kasts and with releases that feature the emotive dreamy yet bass heavy sound ranging from 130 to 170 BPM. Fans are emerging from dubstep and drum'n'bass, across the board to electro and goth/industrial... Playlist and more bio at http://www.artofbeatz.org/site/index.php/aobsite/showpage/march_8_2012/

Mar 1, 2012 with The v.206 Soundsystem
v.206 Soundsystem DJs Laura Lamb and Eric Moon lead a monthly story-telling session using electronic beats and textures at the Living Room bar in Seattle. Laura hails from a basement surrounded by music, much as she did as a young child in her father Gary Lamb's recording studio. From a young age she was fascinated by musical technology, from intimidatingly complex mixing boards to grand pianos. She went on to train as a pianist before getting swept into the world of ballet and modern dance. Soon after Laura moved to Seattle she discovered underground dance music, and never looked back. Eric's fascination with synthetic sound began an early age with tape recorders and primitive computers, which gave soon turned into an all-consuming obsession with synthesizers, drum machines, and artificial soundscapes... Jan 5, 2012 with Dubconscious
Dubconscious has come to represent both the east and the western coast of Canada. Born in Toronto & raised on the jungle & drumnbass sounds permeating the city in the late 90s & early 2000s, he developed a taste for hard beats drenched in reggae vibes. 2004 brought a big move across the country to the city of Victoria, which was nurturing a fledgling breaks & jungle scene by the end of his first year of University, he had bought his first set of Technics and the seed was planted. Bouncing back & forth between TO & Vic for the next 3 years of school presented plenty of chances to play to different music to new crowds, adding reggae & dancehall to the repertoire, as well dubstep in its infancy at this point. After school the move was made back east, joining up with the Dubslingers crew in Toronto who are still holding down Canadas longest running dubstep weekly, Dubslingers Wednesdays at Thymeless... Oct 20, 2011 with JGarrett
The JGarrett project was born In late 2006 when Josh Garrett refocused his music production on DJ-oriented Techno with Acid and Dub influences. Since then JGarrett has released a number of EPs and singles with From 0-1 Records, Super 6 Records, and Xynthetic Music along with numerous remixes and compilation appearances. These releases have consistently received very positive reviews and responses on the promo circuit and support from DJs. Born in Ann Arbor, MI, Joshs approach to music owes a heavy debt to the nutrient rich musical environment found on Detroit radio in the 80s when Talking Heads, Prince, The Police, and Kraftwerk shared space with Front 242, Cybotron, and Cajmere... John may live in Vancouver, but his roots are in the British House Music Underground. John started DJ-ing in 2002 after going to parties thrown by Simplicity, a collective of DJs who threw House and Techno parties in Brixton, south west London. Whether it was putting a sound system together for a house party (you could here the bass from a block away and they went all night) or turning a decrepit warehouse into an acid house den of hedonistic excess, Simplicity took the music and the party to a new level... Aug 18, 2011 with Mechwarrior
Mechwarrior started promoting and dj'ing in 1996 in Sydney, Australia. After promoting successful techno and DnB events in the World War II-era bunkers that dot Sydney Harbors shoreline as well as venues like The Occidental he switched 100% of his focus onto dj'ing. The first promoters to take interest were Junglepunks. Although the name suggests a DnB leaning, the two founders, Jamie 'SpeakaFreaka' Sparks and Alex 'Manson' Morgan were staunch hard-techno fans and the name came from the outdoor venues used. They saw something in the young dj's techno-influenced sets and he became their first DnB resident. Playlist and more at http://artofbeatz.org/site/index.php/aobsite/showpage/august_18th_2011/

Oct 7, 2010 with Pari Kishi
Pari Kishi's love affair with music began at the age of 10 in Bristol UK, when she used to lovingly tape segments off the radio then listen to them on a loop. She did not know what this music was called, but she loved how it made her eardrums feel. She later learnt that this sound, jungle, belonged to a whole family of beats that had a similar effect on her. Since 1999, Pari has witnessed the rave culture in Hong Kong transform from "what it was then, to what it is now" and has made it her life duty to keep the beats alive and injected into the one world soul... Sep 30, 2010 with DJ Revise
A collage artist and sculptor in a former life, electronic music artist Revise melds and shapes different genres and sound sources into his own art form. Imagine if Amon Tobin and Prefuse 73 got together to remix Boards of Canada, with DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist looking on as producers. Palettes to Burn, his debut album, showcases the variety of colours and concepts of this meticulous producer and DJ. Revise (Sam Lawton) was born in Mud River, a remote area of Northern British Columbia, and raised by a blues fanatic father and an artistic mother. No neighbours and long bus rides were ever more reason to delve headfirst into music, starting with Hip-Hop masters Eric B. and Rakim, Marley Marl, Gang Starr, and EPMD... Aug 19, 2010 with Vandal
Vandal is one of the alias' of DJ & producer Sam Evans. Vandal music is combination of a love of electronic music with a lifelong addiction to metal & punk. Through his Vandal guise Sam has created creating some truly global underground and dare we say it timeless anthems that have established him as a key figure in the world of Breakbeat and alternative electronic music. His combination of trademark heavyweight breaks & beats, dirty electronic basslines and twisted techno bleeps & beeps have gained him huge respect from his peers and the critics and resulting in both critical and commercial success, amassing a legion of fans and selling 10s of 1000s of records and downloads. His DJ talents have taken him all around the world from Shanghai to San Francisco, Moscow to Seoul and pretty much every European country that has a nightclub! The year 2001 saw Vandal's first vinyl outing came via the respected Welsh label Plastic Raygun, a remix of kitsch German pop group "Stereo Deluxe". Although the last track of four on the 12, it took everyone by surprise by becoming the most popular on the record, even the don of electronic music, Andrew Weatherall, championed the remix. With the Weatherall seal of approval Vandal was up and running. His debut single "Delivering The Goods" came out in 2001, also on Plastic Raygun label. It featured two tracks 'Boom Stick' and 'Mam Tor', two truely original heavyweight electro/breaks crossovers that immeadtiatly established Vandal as a key new figure in the rapidly growing world of breakbeat. American magazine XLR8R made 'Delivering The Goods' Breaks Single of the Month and stated; "Vandal is severely in the place". NME raved about it, BBC radio 1 played it and all the top DJ's supported it. By the end of 2001 Vandal was voted fifth best producer in the world and "Boom Stick" was voted third best single of 2001 by Breakspoll (International Breakbeat Awards). Not bad considering he only released one single and a couple of of remixes over that 12 month period... Aug 5, 2010 presents Dark Arps
Dark Arps is a Vancouver based Live electronic PA, the latest moniker of Jon Bierman, a Canadian-raised, British-educated electronic musician. This is where you read about the classically trained background, or how, falling in love with 80's electro-pop at the age of 3 he proceeded to buy every Bowie and Depeche Mode albums on vinyl, in duplicate, so he could beat-juggle with them just as soon as he was tall enough to reach the decks. Sorry. No. Bierman's childhood musical education was above average for a kid growing up in Toronto. Recorder (snore). Trombone for a year in band class. First albums: MJ "Bad", GNR "Appetite for Destruction", INXS "Kick." Oh, and George Michael "Faith." At age 8, he played a street urchin as part of the CCOC's chorus group in Bizet's "Carmen" ("sonnez trompetes eclatantes, ta-ra-ta-ta-ta, ta-ta-ta!"). At 10 he got his first drum lesson, the first time that playing or making music genuinely excited him. (Mum and dad were less than enthused. Drum kit REFUSED.) Skoi Sirius (born Shawn Lass) hails from the electronic underground with beats for the body, soul, and mind; his passion injects a cerebral element into the music that lifts his sets to a higher spiritual domain. Self-converted to the electronic side after a thick dose of jungle and drum & bass at the Ice House, an abandoned warehouse in Arizona in the early 00's, he now walks the path of the underground, pushing boundaries with experimental music in whatever way he can. Representing his home of Seattle through the music collectives of his own audiblebicycleday and Michael Manahan's Starborne Productions, Skoi spins potent and provocative IDM lathered breaks and downtempoish beats that take you on a stimulating aural voyage through several musical realms of being before bringing you back around again with a smile on your face and a groove in your brain. As of late, it is common to find Skoi layering many channels of ambiance and field recordings together, creating beautiful, yet sometimes haunting, pulses of sound. Sep 17, 2009 with DJ Krusty
Since I can remember, I have been surrounded by music. As the youngest of seven brothers, we all grew up listening to 80's pop and high energy industrial techno. When I was around 8 years old. one of my brothers took me to the well known club, "PATRICK MILLER" in downtown in Mexico City, which was in one of the huge colonial buildings. The place was full, and the line was around the block. My brother took me to the DJ room, and I was captured by the image of the people, the lights, the music, and the feeling of adrenaline that told me I found my place, my soul, and the part of my life that completed me. After that, I was hooked and played with every kind of stereo I could find, until I got a mixer and an old model of Technics turntables... Mar 12, 2009 with Agent X
Having discovered dance music and DJing at the tail end of the original disco era in 1979, Detroit native Mike Clark submerged himself in the early-'80s post-disco era and continued developing his DJing skills throughout the '80s and '90s and into the early 2000s as one of the Motor City's most respected and talented DJs. Merging Chicago style with the Euro-disco sound popular in Detroit, Clark became a major figure in the birth of Detroit techno in the late '80s, alongside other DJs such as Derrick May, Alton Miller, and D Wynn. During this exciting era of innovative discovery, Clark became Agent X and began producing tracks in addition to his increasingly polished DJing duties. For the remainder of the '90s, he focused mostly on his DJing. Near the very end of the '90s and during the early 2000s, Clark suddenly elevated his presence in Detroit, once again becoming one of the city's most prolific DJs, hosting club nights and joining forces with Carl Craig's Planet E label. Mar 5, 2009 - AoB Astronauts Celebrate 5 Years
Five years in terms of electronic dance music is a long time. Club nights last barely six months. DJs buy and sell their decks in less time. Whole genres are born, praised and die in a two year span. So when we make noise to celebrate our birthday, it's loud. Seeing as we've spent a half-decade bringing everyone from bedroom DJs to international superstars to the airwaves, we thought it best to kick off the Art Of Birthday month with the people who started it all, the AOB Residents. Jan 29, 2009 with Lady Eve
Art of Beatz's own hostess with the mostess, the sultry siren of soundscapes is our feature this evening. Besides being one of the co-hosts of AoB for nearly 5 years, Lady Eve has been doing much work recently in the Vancouver area. By day, she mentors youth in the ways of radio broadcasting (through podcasts), and traditional DJing with a healthy emphasis on using good old vinyl records. In her own time, besides being a member of ambient live act Gunshae, she has also managed to produce and release two records for TKG Music. "Pan Ambient Bento" is named after the small ambient party in Tokyo Eve organized, and features various artists who performed at the event, including Hataken who she helped bring to Vancouver/Victoria for Soundwave, and featured at 2008's version "Pan Ambient Brunch" in San Francisco. Gunshae's first album "Traveling Without Memory" was released at the same time, and was described as "[combining] the formal rigour of academic composition with the melodic pleasures of electronica." So what's ahead for our Lady Eve? Keep tuning in and you'll be amongst the first to know! Playlist at http://www.artofbeatz.org/site/index.php/aobsite/showpage/january_29_2009/

Jan 15, 2009 with The Square Root of Evil
The Square Root of Evil is an electronic musician from Vancouver, Canada. While studying communications at university, she was introduced to electronic music production, discovering she could make all the strange noises that she loved into her own music. Since then, SROE has appeared on compilations in Canada, the US and the UK, has a netlabel EP release on Belladonna Records, various compilation appearances, and another EP on the way. On average she plays live shows monthly, regularly in Vancouver and several in the US and Europe. Besides making music and editing videos, short films and television programs, she promotes shows in Vancouver and has been an active member of the online electronic music community since time began. Square Root of Evil music has elements of drum n bass, breakcore, techno and glitch, with bleeps and bloops from old video games and ample weirdness thrown into the mix, usually in the form of a silly melody or 3. She leans towards frantic and somewhat complex rhythms made with crunchy low-fi sounds, and tries to make people smile while they dance. A tad note about myself. I come from the South Pacific (Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand) where i guess a lot of my sound revolves around. DUB, FUNK, BREAKS, EXPERIMENTAL, QUIRKY ELECTRONICA (at the same time im open to all music) would best describe the sound I create when making music/remixes. I grew up in a musical family where my Uncle was the head of the music faculty in the University of the South Pacific. I spent some time living in Japan DJing and working with The Lava Project (An electronic funk group). Working with The Lava Project was what began my huge interest in remixing for artists around the world.

Making his debut in Canada, Hataken is an improvisational musician, composer, and DJ. As an electronic artist he has worked with musicians across a broad range of styles (ambient jazz, psychedelic, techno, trance, chill out) and has been a force in the Tokyo underground scene for over a decade. Hataken is straight off the heels of a show at South by Southwest, where he performed with Tokyo-based saxophonist Fujiwara Daisuke and their project Quartzhead. Gunshae is live ambience at its most beguiling. Gunshae is improvised laptop and live instrumentation. Gunshae is the Panambient project of Canadian dubstep pioneer James Kuma Graham and renowned Oboeist and DJ, Eve Mori. Gunshae is what happens when a classically trained musician and a notorious DJ with a penchant for improvising, jam on the sound of stuff and things. It's molten woodwinds and Satie references. It's a heavy drones and show tunes played by a band sitting on a veranda after too many mint julips. It's discrete music for the wifi generation. Every Gunshae recording is different. Every live performance is different. Fully improvised to the utmost extent. "When people jump through time, they give themselves up to the rhyme and reason of the heavens." - Julian Cope

"I grew up in Vancouver having moved here shortly after my birth in Toronto. Music was always my passion from a very you age. I fashioned my own home made instruments and was formally trained as a brass player in a local orchestra. At ten I purchased a Fender Strat and was engrossed in the guitar until the age of 15 when after holding down my first job for three months I bought a set of decks from Bassix. I started to play house, hard house and hip hop. I soon moved on to jungle and dnb after about two months. Was inspired by locals like Czech, Dabbler and Matty Pacific at parties that I was going to and listened to music so much that it alienated me from almost everyone who does not spin. Do not be lulled by the honeyed vibes of Binhex's secret ambient and downtempo frequencies. Like some oversexed African python, Team Lounge's first lady of the fish uses musical hypnosis to better take liberties with her victims (often small defenseless animals). In the past, she has used her sorcery to pull off such sordid capers as Centre Neptune, XMAS 2, and Devolution, as well as ruling Victoria's Temple of Sound. Watch as she takes pleasure from the snake that once corrupted man by using past, present and future rave business to remind you that it's never over till you caught as many fish as you desire.

Inkwell is the product of two minds from vastly different backgrounds; cinch and sidetrack bring their musical flavours together to produce a unique live set that is improvised and composed of entirely original material. Rocking mostly homemade gear, their live performance centers around a battle ready PC built into a turntable flight case and a knob box that looks like it?s from 1902. Minimal Techno is the backbone of their set, but it often veers in other more diverse territory without warning.

As time went on, the unit started to change its sound, becoming darker and more technical, this went down well with a lot of people, but naturally it didn't go down to well with some of the diehard fans. In the last 2 years they've been developing a sound which is darker than any kind of 140bpm music, we call it SKUM, the word says it all really, it's a very Drum and Bass influenced sound, along with a fusion of grime and dubstep.

On Feb. 10 2007 at Video In Studios (1965 Main St.) he brought his new work 'Spectral Space' to the city. This performance focuses on the omnipresent din of our media culture, which provides a security blanket for many: when noise is present, we feel at ease; when it stops, we feel unease. In this paradoxical development of our cognitive apparatus we are now better able to assimilate more information at one time and decode its meaning. With 'Spectral Space' Cascone builds a foreground/midground/background sound-field through which sounds glint, shimmer, collide and implode within the fabric of noise.

Jan. 4, 2007 with Transit Kings
The Transit Kings album is probably a once-in-a-lifetime combination of talents coming together to make a studio album. With talent including LX Paterson, Jimmy Cauty, Guy Pratt and Dom Beken, there was little doubt the album would defy typical categorization. Well for a new year exclusive, AoB has received a custom-mix from the Transit Kings... remember you heard it here!

Dec. 28, 2006 with Wilson Hart and Best of '06 3 hour show!
Locals remember Wilson Hart for all the soul his nights brought to downtown. Well he's been at school in Montreal, and is home for the holidays, so we couldn't resist bringing him in for an hour of Hart love. Dec. 21, 2006 with Dee Banse
What a better way to spend Winter Solstice, than with some warm island vibes. Raised in Fiji, Dee Banse made his way from New Zealand to Japan where he fell in love with DJing. These days, he's taking his piano skills into the studio to create beautiful electronic music. Since 2002, he has been the second half of The Lava Project (with Jacob James Henry), making a lot of soulful electronic music. "Coming from the South Pacific, have always been into the laid back dubby/funky sounds."

Dec 14, 2006 with Hasselhoff
Beware of the cute blond ones as they are usually the most suspicious ones in the crowd. With over a decade's time logged behind the turntables, this hot tub frogman, political activist, and all-around bad man can be found all over Western North America pimping his filthy brand of electronic funk to unsuspecting young people everywhere. A founder of Vancouver electroniculture collective and downtempo legends, Team Lounge, and former co-owner of Victoria's Temple Of Sound record store, Quentin Rogers is a prime candidate to soundtrack your next party. Whether you're in need of some classic ambient to make you lie down and be counted or a rough and rugged ride through the lands of techno and electro (ask him for his infamous mix of Plastikman's 'Spastik' and 'Turn Me Loose' by Loverboy if you dare), the artist occasionally known as Hasslehoff is one to be reckoned with.

Dec 7, 2006 with Woodhead
Dirty minds make dirty beats and Darren Woodhead is no exception. A man of many sonic talents, he holds residencies at Signal Saturdays at the Lotus, Lucy Mae Brown and the infamous Backstage Lounge on Granville Island. Bringing cutting edge electro and tech-house to the fore, he's not only good in the club, as one of the evil masterminds involved with the Sauna Sessions, he can be found dropping heavyweight beats in an actual mobile sauna. Hot eh?
