Steven Severin in London and Toronto, with special guests Kalte

It's been a while, hasn't it? Too long some might say...

But rest assured that I am still alive and well, and I am very happy to let you know that Kalte (the musical project featuring the very talented Deane Hughes and myself) will be opening for the legendary Steven Severin at Wolf Performance Hall in London, Ontario on Friday November 9th, and at Nocturne in Toronto, Ontario on Saturday November 10th.

Mr. Severin will be performing his new score to the classic film Vampyr, and we hope that you’ll be able to join us for these very special events. For more information, please click on the posters below.

Those of you that know me personally will know that I've been a fan of Mr. Severin for, ummmmm, most of my life, so this is a very exciting opportunity to share a stage with one of my heroes. Thank you very much to Daniloff Productions and Maggie Morgue Promotions for arranging these shows, and thank you to Mr. Severin for being so kind as to let us play with him...

2011 Reflections
So. December 31st. I'm one of those people that always looks back on the year and reflects on what I've done, successes, failures, good times, bad times, and tries to figure out how I can make the next year better.

And while it may not seem like it from my volume of output (or entries in this blog), I've been really productive this year with a number of great projects and exciting new opportunities! It's actually been a really successful year both artistically and personally, and I'm really grateful for all the chances and possibilities that have come my way.

There were a number of high points, and a lot of things to be happy about, some artistic things, some otherwise. I've commented about them in the past, but sure, why not mention them again?

Kalte, the collaborative project I do with Deane Hughes, released a new album on Petcord in March, "Fissures", which we're both very proud of. If you haven't already heard it, It's cold and glacial and really quite amazing. Expect a follow up in 2012.

We also played a pretty awesome show in March at the Ambient Ping to celebrate the release of "Fissures". Thanks to those of you that made it out, and if you didn't (or if you'd like to relive the experience) you can watch some video here. We have a few plans to play live in 2012, so hopefully you'll have the opportunity to join us then.

In addition to our work as Kalte, Deane and I also have another artistic project called SubZeroArts and we were honoured to present our installation "The Sound is Watching You" as part of the 2011 Nuit Blanche art event in Toronto. It's an all night art exhibit that covers the whole city, and it's kind of a big deal. Definitely the high point of the year for us artistically. Thanks to all of you that came out (and there were soooooo many of you!), we were totally thrilled to be part of the event, and we look forward to putting on more installations in, you guessed it, 2012.

The ping things net label continued to release music, though I'll admit that I didn't stick to the monthly schedule that I have in the past. Regardless of scheduling, ping things put out some great new music including really awesome albums by Lorne David Thomson (two releases in one year!), Sensitive Chaos and more. I've been working on the 2012 release schedule and I think you're going to like it.

On the mara's torment front, well, I didn't do any shows and I didn't release anything. Which is kind of a drag because I was hoping that I would. And I've been promising on this blog for some time now that I would. But I haven't. And it's not for lack of trying, I've actually spent a lot of time on mt this past year, but I don't have anything ready for release for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is a shift in the way I work and the software I use. Here's hoping that I start working faster in 2012 (you'll note that I've learned my lesson and I won't be committing to anything at this point...).

And the year ends on a particularly positive note for mara's torment as I'm very flattered to be the subject of a spotlight by the very cool and amazing Hypnagogue podcast. You can check it out here and of course if you're not familiar with the Hypnagogue podcast, drop what you're doing, stop reading this post, and get over there right now to listen to John Shanahan's awesomely amazing series of over 70 podcasts. There's loads for you to discover there...

In other news, I got an awesome new job, and my partner and I went on a vacation to Montreal AND we painted the bathroom! These (unrelated) things probably don't matter much to you, but they're HUGE things for me. In fact just yesterday I was telling somebody how very much I enjoy my new job and today, six months after the fact, my partner and I had a discussion about how awesome our bathroom looks and how we really should go back to Montreal. Huge things. Absolutely huge things.

So that's about it for 2011. I have a few things to tidy up around the apartment and then I'm curling up with a good book until it's time for dinner. A little work on music after that until it's time to go meet my partner when her shift is done and we have a quiet stay at home new year's celebration, just the two of us. I hope that you all have a wonderful evening, and I hope that 2012 brings you all happiness and success in everything you do!

Happy New Year!

Rik

PS Waitasec, what do you mean you haven't read my list of cool music from 2011 where I tell you about all the groovy music I've enjoyed over the last twelve months? Well then, get on over to the ping things blog and check it out!

R.

We're almost there!

New music!
Hello.

It's been some time hasn't it? Here we are in 2011 and it feels like ages since last we've spoken. And it has been. Far too long. So I'm writing to you now to let you know about a few musical things that may be of interest to you...

First, there is a new Kalte album coming out on March 15th on the Petcord netlabel. “Fissures” features five new songs inspired by the mysteries of the Hadopelagic Zone, continuing our study of cold sounds and deep isolation. We're very pleased with it and we look forward to hearing what you think of it.

In addition, those of you that are local and those of you with an excess of frequent flyer points may be interested to know that Kalte will be playing a show on March 9th here in Toronto to celebrate the release of "Fissures". We'll be working with the new material and also revisiting some old chestnuts, so be sure to mark it in your calendar and I'll let you know more details when we have them.

On the subject of Kalte, if you’d like to be updated with more information about “Fissures”, Kalte live shows, or any other news we feel you need to know about, please add us on Twitter or join our group on Facebook. We’ll make sure to keep you up to date with the necessary Kaltenews.

In mara's torment related news, I'm pleased to inform you that I have a remix that appears on the newly released "Turning Point" album by Prospero. "Turning Point" is a strong testimony to Prospero's fabulous musical talents and features nine new tracks along with remixes by Xorcist, Fractured and more (including my remix of Prospero's "Extinct"). It's a really great Industrial release and I totally encourage you to check it out at http://www.artoffact.com/releases.php

And what of the new mara's torment release, I hear you saying? Where is the new music that you keep promising? Ummmmmm, I'm still promising it? No, really, it's coming, in fact I spent a good part of the afternoon today tweaking and working on new tracks and ummmmm, it's coming together. Slowly. Have faith, it's still coming...

So new mara's torment is something I'm afraid you'll have to wait for, but in the meantime be sure to check out the new Kalte and Prospero releases noted above, and be sure to let me know how you're doing, I'm always happy to hear from all of you!

Cheers,

rik
mara's torment
http://www.marastorment.com

Kalte, live, this Tuesday!
Oh dear. In keeping with the tone of my last post (in February!) I continue to be a terrible blogger. But on the plus side there is still new mara's torment music coming (albeit slowly) which I hope makes up for my apparent silence.

On the Kalte side of things, we're playing live again! This Tuesday! With Akumu! And our good friends Stephen and Mike who are performing for the first time ever as Insukati! You should come! I like exclamation points!

See you on Tuesday!

rik

------------------------------------------------------

THE AMBiENT PiNG
presents iMMERSiVE NiGHTMARES featuring
KALTE + AKUMU + INSUKATI
Tues. Coming from their own respective music careers in electronic music as 's:cage' and 'Displacer'; they have been featured by record labels such as Mute/Novamute, Ant-Zen, Tympanik Audio and M-tronic.Together, as 'Insukati', they bring a progressive direction in ambient/down-tempo music for a modern, dark exploration of emotion and melody, developed in a live performance environment.

Akumu:
Celebrating 10 years performing as 'Akumu', Deane Hughes returns to the Ambient Ping to bring his blend of atmospheric ambience, haunting electronics and shadowy beats. Deane will be showcasing new, unreleased material recorded earlier this year and commemorating the anniversary event with the release of Akumu's 3-Disc Boxset including Akumu's video collection on DVD.
http://www.musicbyakumu.com/

Kalte:
Emerging from cold seclusion in their secret Antarctic recording studio, Deane and Rik of 'Kalte' return to the PiNG stage for their first live performance of 2010. Promising a blend of both new and re-imagined material, Kalte will create an environment of isolation and darkness reminiscent of the Polar dark. Kalte's music crosses a range of genres including zero-bpm, musique concréte and deep ambient to produce dense and eerie soundscapes highlighted on their releases "The Lanthanide Series" (Stasisfield, 2008) and "Glaciations" (Dark Winter, 2009). They are currently working on new material for 2010.
http://www.kaltemusic.com/

a very nice review at Hypnagogue
I am a terrible blogger. I am neglectful and thoughtless, and I really don't seem to be very considerate of your needs at all. Please forgive me though, part of my neglect comes from being busy with new music. In fact I'm listening to some of it right now. It's good so far, and I'm hoping you'll be able to hear it soon...

And while you wait you may be interested in reading a lovely review of "dexterity" written by John Shanahan over at Hypnagogue. John is a wonderful writer and podcaster and I'm most flattered and thrilled by his very kind words. If John's review makes you interested to hear "dexterity" for yourself, you can stream it courtesy of Soundcloud on the mara's torment Facebook page. I'd be thrilled to hear what you think of it...

Gotta run, I haven't had lunch yet and I'm kinda hungry. Free mara's torment disc every purchase through ping things...

New Kalte Show, New CD, New Review and New Twitter Account!
Oh dear. It's been some time since I've last posted here, and I imagine that you've all been missing me fiercely. My sincerest apologies, I'm afraid that sometimes life and music making have a habit of getting in the way of my e-communications, but know that I've been thinking about all of you fondly during my absence.

So, thank you to those of you that made it out to one or both of the Kalte shows in August, it was great to see so many of you and we had a wonderful time playing our songs live, so much so that we'll be doing it again on Thursday October 15th! We'll be playing as part of the Monsters in Your Head Headphone music event at Gallery 1313 (1313 Queen Street West in Toronto, just west of Dufferin) along with Nick Storring and L'Ombre.
Cover is $9 at the door (bring your own headphones or borrow a pair at the door), and it's a 19+ event. We're on first, about 8pm, so please do make sure you arrive early. It promises to be quite an exciting evening and I look forward to seeing all of you there! For more information, please be sure to visit the Monsters in Your Head Event page on Facebook at
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155460272440&index=1

In addition to the Kalte live show, I wanted to let you know that I have a new EP called Dexterity coming out on AtmoWorks on November 13. It's five tracks long, about forty minutes of music, and it addresses conceptual issues of loss and deterioration. It's a bit uneasy to listen to, but I'm hoping you'll enjoy it. Samples will be posted on the mara's torment myspace page shortly for you to check out. If you're not already familiar with the wonderful music that comes from AtmoWorks, then by all means please check out their website!

I also wanted to mention that "across for show..." received a wonderful review from Morpheus Music. Thanks very much to them for their kind support!

Last, but certainly not least, I thought you should know that I now have a mara's torment Twitter account. Everything you could possibly hope to know about me, all in 140 characters or less. Feel free to add me by visiting http://twitter.com/marastorment

So that's about it for now, but don't worry, I'll be back again soon with some new information and maybe even some more new music!

See you then!

rik
mara's torment
http://www.marastorment.com

Hypnagogue Podcast and Star's End
I am very flattered to discover that mara's torment has been included in the third installment of John Shanahan's Hypnagogue Podcast (aka Hypnagogue Podcast 3). I'm in excellent company with a lot of really excellent artists and I encourage you to check it out at http://hypnagoguepodcast.blogspot.com/ not just because you love me, but also because it's a great podcast that I'm really enjoying. Thanks very much to John for his support!

I am also very pleased to let you know that the AtmoWorks re-release of "across for show..." has been noted as one of the top 20 releases for June on Chuck Van Zyl's very cool radio show Star's End. Broadcast on 88.5 WXPN in Philadelphia every Saturday night from 1-6AM, Star's End has been playing great music since 1976 which makes it one of the longest running ambient electronic radio shows in the world. Needless to say it's very cool to have their support and I'm most grateful to Chuck for promoting my stuff on his show!

While I have your attention, I also wanted to let you know that Kalte (my project with the very brilliant and talented Deane Hughes) will be making its live debut on Tuesday August 18th as part of the AMBiENT PiNG's 10th Anniversary Show at Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave, just south of College) in Toronto. We'll be playing as part of a bill featuring Wally Jericho and dreamSTATE and I'll have more details as we get closer to the date. You might also be interested to know that we have a new Kalte track called "Offworld" available exclusively from our website at http://www.kaltemusic.com/. By all means feel free to give it a listen and feel free to drop us an email to let us know what you think...

Cheers,

rik
mara's torment
http://www.marastorment.com

and

Kalte
http://www.kaltemusic.com

"Glaciations" by Kalte
The latest release by Kalte (featuring Deane Hughes of Akumu and rik maclean of mara's torment) is now available for free download from the Dark Winter net label. "Glaciations" can be downloaded at http://www.darkwinter.com/dw056.html

Inspired by the isolation and emptiness inherent in the Polar Night, "Glaciations" is a series of five sound environments made up of cold elements and deep darkness. Drawing from a range of organic sound sources which have been altered and reassembled, "Glaciations" immerses the listener in a space that evokes the feeling of solitude and glacial winds, where dark tones drift through the soundscape, shifting in subtle ways.

With their work in zero-bpm, music concréte and deep ambient, Deane Hughes and Rik MacLean produce eerie and expansive soundscapes by combining natural and electronic elements. "Glaciations" is the duo's latest release, building and expanding on ideas explored on their debut, “The Lanthanide Series” (Stasisfield, 2008). Hughes and MacLean are currently working on their debut full-length CD.

"across for show..." available now through AtmoWorks
I'm very pleased to announce that "across for show..." has been re-issued through AtmoWorks. Described as "a beautiful blend of electronic soundscapes" by Michael Kidd of Dark Velvet, "across for show..." was the second CD release by mara's torment, but until now it's never been released in it's originally recorded form. The AtmoWorks release of "across for show..." (coincidentally timed to mark the tenth anniversary of its initial release) presents the disc the way it was meant to be heard, a dark journey through ambient spaces and secret locations.

"across for show..." is available in both mp3 and CD format through AtmoWorks, and if you aren't already familiar with their store, I strongly recommend that you visit them and check out some of the beautiful work that they've released over the last few years. Truly a wonderful label run by some very wonderful people.

I would especially like to take this opportunity to thank John Koch-Northrup for his help and support in making this happen.

Two new free downloadable releases
I just wanted to let you know that I have two new releases that you may be interested in. And they're both free!!!

I have a release through the ping things net label called "tactile". It's a long form piece taken from a show I did and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. You can download it for free from the ping things net label site as a zip file which contains a 256kbps mp3 of the piece, along with front and back cover art suitable for printing. If you aren't already familiar with the ping things net label, I strongly suggest that you check it out at www.pingthings.com/PTlabel.htm. There are some great releases available there (all for free) by artists like Spatial Correlation, Nunc Stans, Phil Ogison and more. Each month offers a new release so be sure to subscribe to the blog to keep up with future releases.

In other news, I have a collaborative release with Deane Hughes of Akumu which has just been released through the Stasisfield net label. You can download "The Lanthanide Series" by Kalte for free and I would strongly suggest that you do, because it's really good if I say so myself. Described by Netfilter as "an excellent dark and brooding piece of sonic art", we're quite pleased by how it turned out. We're currently working on our next release scheduled for 2009 with a very well respected net label, so rest assured that I'll let you know about that as well.

So there you have it. I feel badly that updates haven't been as frequent of late, but I hope that will improve in the coming months. Keep your fingers crossed that there'll be more new music coming soon...

Cheers,

rik
mara's torment
http://www.marastorment.com

"everything old is new again"
Listen to "everything old is new again" by mara's torment

You thought I forgot about you, didn't you? Nuh uh, I haven't. It's just taken a little longer to get something done than I thought it would. But it's done now, and I'm happy to say that I have a brand new podcast for your listening pleasure. "everything old is new again" was just finished yesterday and I hope you'll enjoy it.

I'm hoping to have more new material for you sooner rather than later, so keep your eyes peeled and make sure you're subscribed to this podcast, 'cause it'll more than likely be posted here first.

BTW, just to be clear, "everything old is new again" is copyright rik maclean 2008

In other news, I'd like to upgrade some of my software so I can create more and better music, but of course that costs money. So I'm appealing to the idea that if you enjoy the music you hear on this podcast (which I'm happy to continue to deliver to you free of charge), please think about making a donation to me to help with some of my costs. And to make it worth your while, if you make a donation of $20 or more before July 15th, I'll write a song exclusively for you. Seriously, a brand new mara's torment track just for you!
