Charlie Poole (1892-1931), groundbreaking banjoist/songwriter, is known as the "Robert Johnson of country music." With his banjo-fiddle-guitar trio, The North Carolina Ramblers, Poole wrote and recorded country music's first mega-hit single ("Don't Let Your Deal Go Down") and many other classic songs that gave birth to the music of both Bill Monroe and Hank Williams. In this one-hour music intensive documentary, host Laura Cantrell traces the origins of modern country music through the songs of Charlie Poole.
The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comedy act of the mid–20th century best known for their numerous Columbia short subject films, still syndicated on television in the 21st Century. Their hallmark was physical farce and slapstick. In films, the Stooges were commonly known by their first names: "Moe, Larry, and Curly" or "Moe, Larry, and Shemp", among other lineups depending on the films. There were six active stooges, five of whom performed in the shorts. Moe and Larry were always present until the last years of the ensemble's run of more than forty years.
The Mel Blanc Show. September 3, 1946. CBS. Sponsored by: Colgate Tooth Powder, Halo Shampoo. Hollywood origination. The first show of the series. Mel tries to get business for his Fix-It Shop with personalized birthday cards, then "novelty" boxes of candy.

Although Mel Blanc "did countless character impersonations on other radio programs, as well as being the voice of many cartoon characters," he used his natural voice in this program and played himself – except that instead of being an entertainer, the Mel Blanc character in the show was "the bumbling owner of a fix-it shop that was never able to fix anything."
A Damsel in Distress is a 1937 English-themed Hollywood musical comedy film starring Fred Astaire, Joan Fontaine, George Burns, and Gracie Allen. With a screenplay by P. G. Wodehouse, loosely based on his novel of the same name.

Lady Alyce Marshmorton must marry soon, and the staff of Tottney Castle have laid bets on who she'll choose, with young Albert wagering on "Mr. X."

Astaire's co-star Joan Fontaine was not a dancer and he was reluctant to dance on screen alone. He also felt the script needed more comic relief to enhance the overall appeal of the film. Burns and Allen had each worked in vaudeville as dancers (aka "hoofers") before forming their act and when word of the project reached them, they called Astaire and he asked them to audition.

Burns contacted an act he had once seen that performed a dance using brooms. For the next several weeks, he and Allen worked at home to learn the complicated routine for their audition. When they presented the "Whisk Broom Dance" to Astaire, he was so taken by it, that he had them teach it to him and it was added to the film. Their talents were further highlighted as they matched Astaire step by step in the demanding "Funhouse Dance". Throughout the picture Burns and Allen amazed audiences and critics as they "effortlessly" kept pace with the most famous dancer in the films, as many did not know either of them could dance.
Are Husbands Necessary? is a 1942 American comedy film directed by Norman Taurog and starring Ray Milland and Betty Field. It follows the misadventures of a wacky wife and her sometimes exasperated, but loving, banker husband. The film's screenplay was adapted by the husband-and-wife writing team of Tess Slesinger and Frank Davis, from the novel Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage by Isabel Scott Rorick. This novel would later be a source for the related 1948 radio series My Favorite Husband starring Lucille Ball, which itself would evolve into the television series I Love Lucy.

A one-hour Lux Radio Theater adaptation of the film, featuring George Burns and Gracie Allen, aired February 15, 1943 on CBS Radio.
Stablemates from Lux Radio Theater starring Wallace Beery and Mickey Rooney in their original roles. Mickey Rooney stars as a kid who works around the race track stables and ends up getting a broken down horse instead of pay. Wallace Beery is a drunken drifter who happens upon the stable where Rooney tends his horse. This is a heart warming story with great acting. The big race at the end is actually the entire 1938 $50,000 Hollywood Gold Cup race won by Seabiscuit. Lux aired this story on March 31, 1941.
Mickey Rooney (born Joseph Yule, Jr.; September 23, 1920 – April 6, 2014) was an American actor of film, television, Broadway, radio, and vaudeville. In a career that spanned nearly nine decades and continued until shortly before his death, he appeared in more than 300 films and was one of the last surviving stars of the silent film era.

At the height of a career that was marked by precipitous declines and raging comebacks, Rooney played the role of Andy Hardy in a series of fifteen films in the 1930s and 1940s that epitomized American family values.

He briefly starred in a CBS radio series, Shorty Bell, in the summer of 1948, and reprised his role as "Andy Hardy", with most of the original cast, in a syndicated radio version of The Hardy Family in 1949 and 1950 (repeated on Mutual during 1952).
The Six Shooter was a weekly old-time radio program in the United States. It was created by Frank Burt, who also wrote many of the episodes, and lasted only one season of 39 episodes on NBC (Sept. 20, 1953-June 24, 1954). Through March 21, 1954 it was broadcast Sundays at 8 p.m. Beginning April 1, 1954 through the final episode it was on Thursdays at 8 p.m.

James Stewart starred as Britt Ponset, a drifting cowboy in the final years of the wild west. Episodes ranged from straight western drama to whimsical comedy. A trademark of the show was Stewart's use of whispered narration during tense scenes that created a heightened sense of drama and relief when the situation was resolved.
One of the swiftness radio series, the True Detective Mysteries program
broadcast over CBS every Thursday evening, owes much of its popularity
to the action which takes place in the studio. Reproducing as it does
true stories of various police cases, it is often impossible to go into
every detail of the story, and so far no one has actually been murdered
in the broadcast: but when a struggle is indicated in the script the
actors proceed to struggle; when the gong and siren on the police cars
are heard, there are sirens and gongs in the studio.

Staged under the direction of Charles Schenck, one of radio's pioneers
in stagecraft, "True Detective Mysteries" utilizes approximately the
same cast each week to dramatize the more thrilling story in the current
issue of the magazine from which it takes its name. Much of the
program's success is due to the fact Mr. Schenck has been able to
assemble the cast which his experience has shown him possesses really
ideal voices for the microphone, as well as dramatic ability. The sound
effects, pistol shots, slamming doors, crashing glass, speeding
autos---every conceivable noise, in fact---are produced by one man, who
sets up his apparatus before his own special microphone, and, working
from his own copy of the script, follows his cues as carefully and
promptly as do the actors.

PURSUIT (CBS 1949 - 1952) was a detective series that presented the cases of the fictional Scotland Yard Inspector Peter Black. (The leading character was called Inspector Harvey in the audition show and the first episode.) The Inspector was a dedicated policeman, a man hunter, who once on the case, would not rest until the wrongdoer was brought to justice. Black was assisted in cases by Sgt. Moffet.

The series was unusual in that it featured dual narration. Starting in the Spring of 1950, Bill Johnstone provided the opening and closing narrations and sometimes, bridges between commercials. Inspector Black furnished the change of scenes and overall case narrations.

Standard Opening: Spoken by the Narrator:

"PURSUIT. "A criminal strikes and fades quickly back into
the shadow of his own dark world. . . and then, the man
from Scotland Yard, the famous Inspector Peter Black, and
the relentless, dangerous pursuit. . When man hunts man!"

Elvis grows from his childhood in Tupelo and Memphis to become, at various times, the King of Rock & Roll, a threat to America's moral fiber, an honorable soldier serving his country, and one of Hollywood's biggest film stars. Close friends (Jerry Schilling, Patty Parry) and historians (Pete Guralnick, Ernst Jorgensen) detail his earliest influences, struggles and successes on his path to stardom alongside Elvis' own words and some of his best known recordings.
Broken Arrow from Screen Director's Playhouse aired September 7, 1951. Starring in their original roles is James Stewart as Tom Jeffords, Jeff Chandler as Cochise and Debra Paget as Sonseeahray (Morningstar). Broken Arrow is the story of a land, of the people who lived on it in the year 1870, and of a man whose name was Cochise. He was an Indian leader of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. The performances of James Stewart, Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget are outstanding and Broken Arrow is one of the first westerns to portray Native Americans in a balanced, sympathetic way. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, and won a Golden Globe. Interesting is that the world premier was at the Nusho Theater in downtown Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Tom Shaughnessy was iron-tough, but he was no lawman. Back in New York,
he'd been the strong-arm for an infamous Irish gang. But when he jumped
a westbound train to escape a deadly street war, fate sent him to a
small Kansas town on the brink of its own violent battle. The
townspeople were sorely in need of a marshal, and they convinced Shaughnessy to pin on the badge. Based on the Louis L'Amour novel "The Iron Marshal". With Matthew Settle, Linda Kozlowski, Tom Bower, Sarah Paulson.
Colonel Utah Blaine, held captive by the Army of the Revolution, broke out of jail and headed north from Mexico with nothing but the clothes on his back. Then he found new trouble struggling at the end of a noose–and stepped in just in time to save the life of a Texas rancher. The would-be executioners were the rancher’s own men, looking to steal his land. Based on the Louis L'Amour novel. This is the original movie adaptation of Lucy Maude Montgomery's Anne Of Green Gables with sound, though most will remember the remake from the mid 1980's that
starred Megan Follows, this original 1934 black and white version is absolutely great also. The actress who played Anne Shirley used to be called Dawn O'Day but when she read the Anne Of Green Gables book to research her role she liked the character so much she decided to change her name to Anne Shirley.
