Podcast Episode's:
Revenge of the Schwantz — Episode 681
It's Mikael and Eva in my backyard to record an episode with topics as varied as what I would have done as a king during the days of prima nocte, Eva's incredible impression of Jennifer Tilly, Mikael's desire to give a man a cuckoo-bird cuckolding, the latest in the Thomas Middleditch saga, and why getting your nips pierced is good for the health. It's a fun episode. We hope you enjoy. And give us money via Patreon. Really, that's the important part. Give us your money via Patreon! Birthday Means Never Having To Say You’re Sorry — Episode 679

Holding Out for an Acorn — Episode 678
Days away from my 40th birthday, I reflect on my life with a depth, clarity, and vulnerability I rarely offer. JK we discuss dating sites for men with acorn peens, Eva "Size Queen" Kriksciun losing her virginity at age 13 to adult entertainer Peter North, my ability to guess age/race/sexuality/class through hearing a voice alone via my love of stereotypes, and some incredibly disgusting things I used to do to my former college roommate. The Grapest Of Friends — Episode 675
Anand "Big Brown" Gahlot is a guy I met over a decade ago as we both operated DC-area podcasts and were attempting to get on-air. Yes, that’s how old we are: we did podcasts before podcasts were even a goal unto themselves (or even called podcasts), and were instead weird little episodic demos for radio jobs that you hosted on a website or burned to CDs that you then handed out to friends. He was always a nice, funny guy, and it was my joy to have him back on the show to talk about our common past, his former show, Big Brown and Burnsie, and his current podcast, Grape Friends. I forget what Grape Friends is about. Either he talks wine with friends or he plays God by granting grapes sentience and then befriends them. It's probably the first one, but I'm holding out hope it's the second. Click here to listen to the latest episode of Papa's Basement in your browser (and here to give us your money via Patreon). Tony Robbins Ruined My Life — Episode 674
Eva delights in my telling the story of how listening to Tony Robbins in my mid-20s set my life down an objectively horrible path. I also talk about how screwing around with our phones at all times has even ruined my ability to watch quality movies, and I now only stream films that I can comfortably watch half-assed while texting and browsing (e.g., my joyful viewing of Heartbreakers and All The Right Moves) this week. And what would an episode be without talking about your morning coffee followed by a nice caffeine-fuelled puh-poo? A Fan Of OnlyFans — Episode 673
It's snowing, which means I talk with Eva about why I hate snow (that's...that's what I do). I also discuss two folks I know via Twitter that have started OnlyFans accounts and me wrestling with my cheapness in deciding whether or not I wanted to see acquiantances naked, which is the best thing in life, and makes me feel like most people do about a snow day. Catfished By A Child — Episode 672
Happy New Year! In our first episode of the year, we close the episode with an amazing story of Mikael Johnson getting catfished by a child into driving out to a date that never happened not once BUT TWICE. It's an amazing story, and the rest of the episode is also fantastic, featuring: My autistic level of Metallica knowledge, a summary of what World War I-era plastic surgery looked like (check out War Against War!), and getting into the whole Jen Sterger/Brett Favre flaccid dong pics story with Eva, who has somehow NEVER RECEIVED A D PIC IN HER LIFE! Snapping Nudes With A Logitech Webcam In 2003 — Episode 670
Snapping a nude to send someone used to mean something. Either you had to use a webcam, which snapped pics with the resolution of a Game Boy, or pull out a digital camera, take your photo, stick the SD card in your computer, and then email the nudes. What barbarism. We also talk the revelation that is DiGiorno's croissant crust pizza, and a local grocery chain by the name of Giant Food doing its best to not be the sketchy old craphole that it is. Eva K: Covid’s Li’l Super Spreader — Episode 662
Eva K., co-host of the podcast, learned immediately after recording last wee’s episode maskless in a backyard with me that she had Covid. She’s been sick. And I’m a hypochondriac, so then I started to feel sick. This led to her infecting loved ones and me finding out what it’s like to take a dump while wearing an N95 mask. Also on the docket? I take my first bike ride as an adult man, which lead to me spending a day with an ice pack on my taint, the magic of elementary school Thanksgiving meals, my horrible career as a drummer, the death of Eddie Van Halen, and whether it’s the fate of all genius ultimately usher in a wake of lesser imitators. Aaron Tippin’s “That’s The Closest I’ll Get To Lovin’ You” Is A Serial Killer’s Idea Of Love — Ep 654
On our last podcast episode, we spent the entire runtime pouring over the music video for Benny Mardones’ “Into The Night,” which featured, among other things, a 34-year-old Mardones’ throwing a magic carpet into the room of a 16-year-old girl, then flying away with her on a date. (Should there be quotation marks around the word date? She’s a kid, she can’t consent to buying a pack of cigs much less an excursion where the choices are acquiesce to the demands of your captor or PLUMMET TO YOUR DEATH!

!! I digress. We had so much pouring over that video like it was the Zapruder film that we had our guest from the episode, comedian Pete Bergen, return once more to dissect another music video gem: Aaron Tippin’s “That’s The Closest I’ll Get To Lovin’ You.” While everyone is of the age of consent in this one, it features a singer that looks like redneck Freddie Mercury, a gaggle of wino Southern women whose pictures are next to "pretty 90s white bitch" in the dictionary, and a shed that looks like it’s covered in the singer’s semen. Oh, and to top it all off, it was directed by the same guy who directed Metallica’s “One.” If you enjoyed the last episode, you’ll enjoy this one. If you didn’t, drink bleach. Benny Mardones’ “Into The Night” Is Horrifying — Episode 653
For this episode, we dissect a music video that co-host Mikael Johnson brought to the table, Benny Mardones' "Into The Night." The song's troubling lyrics, depicting the downright illegal plowing of a minor, is matched in creepiness only by its horrifying video, which we dissect live on-air with comedian Pete Bergen. You can watch the video here, which I recommend you do as we MST3K-style attack it. Netflix has two new offerings poised to court fans of Steve Carell and Will Ferrell: Space Force, an original series starring Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and countless other big names, brought to us by The Office showrunner Greg Daniels. And Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, an original film starring Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Pierce Brosnan, and my Greek future bride, Melissanthi Mahut. Is either worth your time? A Call From Mike Sacks, Ocean City’s Wayward Son — Episode 647
Author, comedian, and all-around mensch Mike Sacks joins us to talk about his latest project, the Amazon-exclusive novelization of Passable In Pink , his 80s-drenched, coming-of-age audio book that satirized Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, and every other work in the John Hughes canon. Hear what life has been like for this DMV-area transplant as he rides out quarantine in a Brooklyn apartment with his daughter, a pair of cats, and a browser window permanently open to the Thrasher’s French Fries camera on the Ocean City boardwalk. With You…In Spirit — Papa’s Basement 644
Our first podcast after so very much news took place. Protests, pandemic, movie references, the "I Take Responsibility" video, and my massive donation to the cause. I think that about covers the episode. (I also think I said it was Virginia Madsen in Ace Ventura, not Sean Young. Probably not the worst thing I said this episode, but it should be noted, nonetheless, as I've thought about it every day since recording. Because I have nothing better to obsessively focus upon.) The Office, Season 7, Episode 22 — Papa’s Basement 643
I swear we aren't a pack of un-woke gargoyles: The reason this episode fails to touch on peaceful protests, police brutality, and all those other incredibly important events of the last week or so is because we recorded this thing like 10 days ago and I've just been too lazy to upload it until now. We were originally going to have fellow podcaster Brianna Hunter on the show, but she had to put together a packet and had to reschedule. The Wordmasters — Papa’s Basement 639
Papageorgiou : Loser :: Kriksciun : Winner. It's very tongue-in-cheek...only 10% still-simmering rage, tops. (On a heart-wrenching note, Alex passed away a few weeks ago. The Cross-Eyed Bear — Papa’s Basement 622
Josh Bard of The Prompt Magazine kindly hosts us in his house as he fills us in on what he, a married man, has been doing during his week without the wife. I also share the most disgusting phrasing I've ever heard to describe a certain kind of porn scene (which I learned the night prior and can't stop thinking about). And the reveal that I spent a long weekend of my senior year at a gala filled with celebrities as Clinton government officials (this is true and not some Epstein Island fever dream) worked to explain why they intervened in Serbia but not Rwanda. And lyrics to hit songs that we got incorrect for years. Because no, there was not a huge mid-90s hit that actually contained the words "cross-eyed bear." Why I’m Proud The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Stabbing Happened In DC — Papa’s Basement Podcast 615
People love the Popeyes chicken sandwich. You know why? We are fat slobs that have no respect for our bodies, we want to be a part of anything we think is somehow exclusive while also costing us under $5, and we are all really cool with being Adolph Hitler to birds. Everyone has been posting crazy Popeyes chicken sandwich stories, like the footage of a woman smashing her car up to cut in a drive through line for one, but the DMV area is home to my favorite two debacles to come out of this delicacy's release: A man getting stabbed because he cut in line for the sandwich, and one of the Popeyes in my backyard getting caught on tape assembling their sandwiches on top of a trash bin. God help me, I love it all. On top of that, Eva and I talk Terminator: Dark Fate (which is currently eating shit at the box office harder than some creature from Greek myth that has its lips glued to its ass by Zeus for speaking lies), which cast member displays their unbelievably amazing ass multiple times in the film (it still might be Schwarzenegger, the man has been doing squats since 1884), and the horrific behavior of the people I sat next to in the theater (I wish they had cut a certain person in line at Popeyes). Comedy Writer Mike Sacks Talks His New Audio Book, Passable in Pink
Mike Sacks is a singularly gifted comedy writer, author of the indispensable humor tomes And Here’s the Kicker and Poking a Dead Frog. His tireless work ethnic eventually took him into the realm of audio book originals, including Stinker Lets Loose and Why Not #MeToo?!. His latest, Passable in Pink, is a satirical homage to the John Hughes films of the 80s, and boasts an A-list cast, including Adam Scott, Gillian Jacobs, Bobby Moynihan, and Bob Odenkirk. Mike’s interview is a true gem, and we ping pong from Passable in Pink to his overmedicated childhood, why he receives constant gay fan mail intended for another man, his long-standing beef with Ferris Bueller, which The Breakfast Club character he identifies with most now that he’s in his 40s, stories from being a 17-year-old undergrad in New Orleans, and how the Baltimore Orioles factor into his OCD, just to scratch the surface. Mr. Sacks is a gem and a delight, so do yourself a favor, listen to the episode, and pre-order Passable in Pink on Audible by clicking the link. (If it's your first book, Audible will even give it to you for free.) Mike Sacks runs both a fantastic Twitter account (@MichaelBSacks) and a hilarious Instagram (@MikeBSacks) that typically features the covers of insane books from his personal collection. They are absolutely worth your follow. Oh, and there's even a Passable in Pink: Official Motion Picture Soundtrack, featuring some downright incredible era-appropriate artists. Indulge! Where Is Thumbkin? — Papa’s Basement 613
Eva...and Thumbkin. I (all too soon, apparently) celebrate the World Series success of the Washington Nationals, which really hit the spot given 1. The Redskins suck and it's time to move on and 2. I grew up playing baseball (fat kid outfielders unite), and really missed it. A Minute-By-Minute Summary of Joker — Papa’s Basement 611
The last thing countless pizzas have seen. I am a huge liar, and did wind up going to a part of my 20 year high school reunion. So you get a summary of that (I really know how to make this all sound tremendously compelling, I know). The bulk of the episode, however, is co-host Eva Kriksciun talking about her experience seeing Joker. I’m torn about watching the film, as we all know the role was perfected by Cesar Romero, but she makes some cogent points. Also, it’s like $6 to see a movie on Tuesdays, so what the hell. I immediately photographed the car from every angle and shared the images on social media, but soon forgot about my encounter with Mr. Black Velvet. Fast forward to today, and I pulled up alongside the one and only Black Velvet. This time, I actually visited the URL, as well as his social media, and was exposed to the man’s art, his poetry, and everything else there is that makes Black Velvet quite so black and velvety. Goodbye, Shawn Westfall — Papa’s Basement 605
Mt. Rushmore of DC's improv studs. The past three years of my life have been defined by immersing myself in DC’s improv comedy scene, and I have spent the large majority of my time in that scene in some way, shape, or form with Shawn Westfall. He’s been my teacher, my friend, and his theater’s toilet was one of the few places I knew I could crap in sanitary peace if my day job took me into DC. Sadly, Shawn has shuttered his Unified Scene Theater as of this August, and is moving to Portland, OR with his wife, Kathy, pretty much as I write these words. Like most members of DC’s comedy community, I’m both heartbroken to lose the guy and excited for the awesome new opportunities the future has in store for him. But most of all, I’m really gonna miss that goddamn toilet. It was my distinct pleasure to play host to Shawn Westfall one final time in the Papa’s Basement studios, flanked by his comedy wife, Mikael Johnson, and the latest in his long line of bastard improv children, Joe Gagliardi. Shawn, from all of us, all the best. And, if you can remember, what toilet paper did you stock the theater with? That stuff felt like you were wiping with a double-ply dream. RIP Nick Buoniconti – Papa’s Basement 604
"One day, Nick, you will die. And, on that day, your death will breath the heart of an old woman. And that, my son, is your truest victory." Longtime listeners are well aware of "The Bit" - the delight I take in telling my mom that a celeb she's a fan of has passed on before she's heard elsewhere. Well, this week, Nick Buoniconti, of Miami Dolphins fame, has passed away. And, as I remembered from a childhood story she told me years ago, my mother knew him personally. Sexy Is A Relative Term — Papa’s Basement 601
“Glenlivet, single malt. When you die, you’ll go to heaven, say hello to God. And when God says hello to you, this is what you’ll smell on his breath.”-Rip Torn as Artie, Larry Sanders Show. RIP. There’s some great stuff in this episode, which is co-hosted by DC-area comedy stalwarts Mikael Johnson and Joe Gagliardi. We debate what my newfound love of the show POSE means for my love life, what Mikael’s love of pastel shirts say about his, and Joe reveals his tactics for mentally torturing the children that make his life a living hell when playing Call of Duty online. America’s Best Sandwich — Papa’s Basement 599
Good sandwich bread is like a good football coach: Crusty on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, and covered in a thin layer of yeast that they just can't get rid of. I'm not going to get clever with the description, as this is far too important a topic to trivialize. The Funniest Funny Songs Ever — Papa’s Basement 598
This is my preferred lineup of Tenacious D, before Jack Black left (or was kicked out, depending on which side you believe) and replaced by Sammy Hagar. Personal opinion: Most funny songs aren't actually funny. I don't know what it is, but comedy tends to go with music the way cats go with a seafood buffet: Two things I love, but then the cats get into your shrimp, and it's a whole thing. But, occasionally, comedy and music get it just right, like a seafood buffet with an appropriate amount of cat shields. Today, I'm joined by Brian Duss, Bizzy Fain and Yancey Burns, all stalwarts of DC's comedy scene, to discuss our picks for funny songs that are actually funny. So, not only do you get a funny podcast, you then get to seek out the funny songs we mention afterward. Play your cards right, and you won't get a damn thing done today. Did we leave your favorite song off the list? Then call us pieces of crap and tell us what we forgot via our social media handles. Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt — Papa’s Basement 592
An unbidden review from friend and listener @CeceHalpert. Not sure what exactly in the episode prompted her to say it, but see if you agree! Before we go further, I'm just gonna put this here: If you wanna go from a listener to a supporter (and, ultimately, a lover), please contribute to my Patreon. A dollar a month will buy you nothing and me nothing, but it's a show of good faith. With that out of the way, let's talk about the episode! Radio vet and silken talent Bill Rohland is back with me behind the mic and, in a sprawling, two-hour pod, we explore all sorts of things: Netflix's new offering, Mötley Crüe's The Dirt, Bill's brushes with his two largest celebrity crushes (Jenny McCarthy and Tara Reid, the different tribes that nearly ever high schooler belonged to one of (thanks, Breakfast Club!), a take on HBO's Leaving Neverland, and a celebration of multiple 80s musical acts that probably no one outside of the studio will remember. It's all here on the latest, loveliest episode of Papa's Basement, and you can get it all by clicking below! Follow this episode's cast on Twitter and Instagram! Which Happens First? — Papa’s Basement 591
This is what happens when I'm in a rush and fail to take pictures with the co-hosts: Pics of my cat, Buster! I'm joined once more by Josh Bard and Kelaine Conochan of The Prompt Magazine (an incredible humor site), two people with top-notch production in their blood. Kelaine brings another killer game to the show, aptly named "Which Happens First?" The player has to guess what will go down between two scenarios of varying likelihood and IT IS AMAZING. Will the world end before we have designer babies? Will The Smiths reuinte before The White Stripes? Will John lose the excess weight before he goes bald? It's the game that spits hot fire, and you can play along by listening to this episode! Follow this episode's cast on Twitter and Instagram! WTF Is Wrong With You #2 – Live From The Unified Scene Theater
Let the intellectual spit roast begin! Shawn Westfall's Unified Scene Theater (DC's finest improv comedy establishment) hosts a second evening of him and John Papageorgiou of the Papa's Basement Podcast dispensing wisdom, Loveline-style, to an audience that came to share their personal problems and, hopefully get them solved. The answers range from funny to wisdom-laden (words that look a lot more like "bin Laden" than I'm comfortable with, come to think of it), and we hope that everyone who came got something out of it. For those of you that didn't, enjoy the audio from the evening, and we hope to see you at the next WTF is wrong with you in lovely Bloomingdale, DC!
