Cat Turds & Oppenheimer Manorexia — Episode 743
In light of the talk of Cillian Murphy's starvation for Oppenheimer Mollie Heckerling and I talk about how stupid method acting weight gain/loss has been, and I share the highs and lows of watching my girlfriend's cat for the week (low - I gave it an incorrect, massive dose of laxative and had to clean the aftermath). Papa’s Basement, Mollie’s Backyard — Episode 742
Mollie Heckerling and I return to the mics long enough for me to declare that video games are soul-stealing drugs (that I'm totally addicted to), the perceived downsides of healing ones past traumas, the latest news of Jonah Hill's ex outing him as a controlling weirdo, and how I walked an audience member at a recent comedy show. It's a really good episode, and it's really good to be back. Thank you to all of you that are still listening. But not those that aren't anymore. No, you among those accursed ranks are dead to me. Cruisin’ Ocean City!!!! — Papa’s Basement 741
I relay to Howard the story of my weekend in Ocean City, MD, filled with troubled trash, mediocre food (although I managed to eat 2 lbs of fudge in 48 hours), and drowning in the crowds of Cruisin' Ocean City, a car event that made me feel even more than I usually do that this country is doomed. I summarize a very bad week that included: -My wallet being stolen and some identify theft for good measure -Almost getting run off the road by a crazed hick in a pickup because I drive a Prius -Performing an eviction where I barely avoided entombing an elderly cat in a house, and probably still wound up killing it indirectly. Let's Do This Shit!!!!!!!!!!!": The Marketing of "Passing on the Right", which chronicles how he got ripped off to the tune of several thousand dollars by a publicist that got him jack crap in the end. On top of that, co-host Mollie Heckerling and I discuss with him: -A brother I never knew he had that lives in Israel under the sway of a radical rabbi -The oddest foods we've ever eaten in strip clubs -What he hates most in comedy today -A really weird aspect of Greek Easter celebrations that we've both been party to -Why, if you burn your foot in a restaurant deep fryer, you NEVER let them pay you off with free food for life It's a fantastic episode, and Mike is an incredible mind that I'm proud to call a friend. Blow Me An S-Kiss — Episode 716
Eva Kriksciun grew up on the good side of the tracks...the Greenbriar side of the tracks. It wasn't until her middle school years that she was forced to rub elbows with Brookfield filth like myself. Oscar Slap — Episode 715
Yes, by law, Mollie and I discuss Chris Rock getting slapped by Will Smith. But I also cover a bunch of random things that happened to me since I last did an episode with Mollie, including getting a lady cop (the technical term) locked out of her vehicle into her car, an extremely embarrassing (but on-brand) moment at the gym, and realizing I might finally be thin enough to be worthy of attention because a gay man complimented my beard. “Your President’s Large, Irish Balls” — Episode 707
Mikael surprising us with a massive, audible fart. For the better part of two decades, if you were talking improv comedy in Washington, D.C., you were talking Shawn Westfall. The man established the curriculums taught to countless performers in the city, founded and ran his own improv theater (RIP Unified Scene!), and enthralled innumerable audiences with his longtime comedic partner Mikael Johnson as part of the improv duo ShawnMikael[s]. While Shawn left DC and now calls Portland, OR home, he was back in town for the holidays, and I was lucky enough to get him on the show alongside Mikael. They're both as funny as ever, and I think you'll love ("and share?," said in my guiltiest Jewish mother voice) the episode. Also, the episode title will make zero sense unless you listen to it, so you kinda have to now? Oh, and the photo is a shot-by-shot as Mikael surprised us with a massive, audible fart. Meconium — Episode 706
Remember Eva? She's back! In mom form! Yes, co-host Eva Kriksciun returns to the show after giving birth to talk with me and Mollie Heckerling about being a new mom. They bond over brooding, I sit on the sidelines, kid-cucked, and then Eva introduces the podcast to the term "meconium." Is it an early-90s black metal band that burned down churches in their native Norway? A radioactive byproduct of the Chernobyl disaster? The first name of a prospective first-round draft pick? Vickie — Episode 705
Hear the story of Vickie, a middle-aged Greek importer that my mother tasked me with procuring three items from for New Year's Day (a link to my mom's ridiculous email, mentioned in the episode). Co-host Mollie Heckerling and I also meditate on the weird ways that fame can either find us or elude us (in our case, very much elude us), and what it takes to keep going (answer: amphetamines). Not to mention Mollie's amazing segment on what a giant old lady whore she's looking forward to being when finally sent to a nursing home. Congrats to co-host Eva Kriksciun and her decision to ruin her life. But the show must go on, and comedian Mollie Heckerling has decided to join the Papa's Basement family as co-host. We discuss the past month of our lives, which has seen me living on my own in the city and ask a girl out (yes, I'm actually straight) and Mollie working on a puppet show where the puppets are (possibly literally) made of trash. I actually reminisce about the show's history for once, instead of celebrating it the way I do most of the anniversary episodes, which is playing a kazoo sound effect and then doing a normal episode. The Godfather Horse Scene Is Ridiculous — Episode 696
I reveal to Eva the various maladies that are claiming my rotting, 40-year-old body, and I then bring up a point that my mom made the last time we both watched The Godfather: the severed horse head scene is maybe the most ridiculously implausible scene in an otherwise fantastic movie. DMX's untimely death leaves Eva, a drug treatment counselor, thinking she could have saved him had she just been there for him these last few years. A reminder that you can't just snap a person's neck like they show in the movies (with that satisfying "crack" sound to accompany it). The Grapest Of Friends — Episode 675
Anand "Big Brown" Gahlot is a guy I met over a decade ago as we both operated DC-area podcasts and were attempting to get on-air. Yes, that’s how old we are: we did podcasts before podcasts were even a goal unto themselves (or even called podcasts), and were instead weird little episodic demos for radio jobs that you hosted on a website or burned to CDs that you then handed out to friends. He was always a nice, funny guy, and it was my joy to have him back on the show to talk about our common past, his former show, Big Brown and Burnsie, and his current podcast, Grape Friends. I forget what Grape Friends is about. Either he talks wine with friends or he plays God by granting grapes sentience and then befriends them. Tony Robbins Ruined My Life — Episode 674
Eva delights in my telling the story of how listening to Tony Robbins in my mid-20s set my life down an objectively horrible path. I also talk about how screwing around with our phones at all times has even ruined my ability to watch quality movies, and I now only stream films that I can comfortably watch half-assed while texting and browsing (e.g., my joyful viewing of Heartbreakers and All The Right Moves) this week. Eva K., co-host of the podcast, learned immediately after recording last wee’s episode maskless in a backyard with me that she had Covid. She’s been sick. Ben Shapiro’s Wet Asspussy — Papa’s Basement 655
Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion (I’m an almost-40 white guy, I want credit for knowing who the hell these people are) have released a hyper-sexual single titled “WAP.” Ben Shapiro, whom I’m not really aware of outside of his shit politics and punchable face, then did a fake-offended reading of the lyrics on-air. We make fun of that, Eva’s engagement (congrats!), and my last reckless bender. Share this episode. Tell a friend. Unlike Ben Shapiro, be proud of the filth you listen to. Aaron Tippin’s “That’s The Closest I’ll Get To Lovin’ You” Is A Serial Killer’s Idea Of Love — Ep 654
On our last podcast episode, we spent the entire runtime pouring over the music video for Benny Mardones’ “Into The Night,” which featured, among other things, a 34-year-old Mardones’ throwing a magic carpet into the room of a 16-year-old girl, then flying away with her on a date. (Should there be quotation marks around the word date? She’s a kid, she can’t consent to buying a pack of cigs much less an excursion where the choices are acquiesce to the demands of your captor or PLUMMET TO YOUR DEATH!

!! I digress. We had so much pouring over that video like it was the Zapruder film that we had our guest from the episode, comedian Pete Bergen, return once more to dissect another music video gem: Aaron Tippin’s “That’s The Closest I’ll Get To Lovin’ You.” While everyone is of the age of consent in this one, it features a singer that looks like redneck Freddie Mercury, a gaggle of wino Southern women whose pictures are next to "pretty 90s white bitch" in the dictionary, and a shed that looks like it’s covered in the singer’s semen. Oh, and to top it all off, it was directed by the same guy who directed Metallica’s “One.” If you enjoyed the last episode, you’ll enjoy this one. If you didn’t, drink bleach. Benny Mardones’ “Into The Night” Is Horrifying — Episode 653
For this episode, we dissect a music video that co-host Mikael Johnson brought to the table, Benny Mardones' "Into The Night." The song's troubling lyrics, depicting the downright illegal plowing of a minor, is matched in creepiness only by its horrifying video, which we dissect live on-air with comedian Pete Bergen. You can watch the video here, which I recommend you do as we MST3K-style attack it. Oh, and if you guys have any creepy music videos to recommend for future episodes where we do this, by all means, send them our way. Mikael Johnson Good At Improv, Me Bad — Episode 651
I remember zip about this episode, as it's languished on my recorder since Mikael and I completed it back on 6/30. But I did listen to the first 30 seconds to hear where it started and it stars with Mikael spinning improv gold while I tread water like a pawless dog chucked into the Potomac to keep up with him. The Man That Should Have Hosted Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries — Episode 650
We cover a lot of ground in this episode. Highlights include: -Debating who should host the Netflix reboot of Unsolved Mysteries, with Mikael coming up with a real winner -My adult massage happy place is back open, and I share its new health policies for banging strangers during quarantine -Another anti-mask jizz-chugger, this time wearing a “Running The World Since 1776” shirt and screaming he was being intimidated in a bid to use the concealed weapon he carried (seriously, check out his waist in the video of the incident) -Mikael and I discuss how we had crushes on every single woman on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air as kids -I bust out one of my two impressions, that of Fast Times At Ridgemont High’s Mike Damone -#FartPlate Click here to listen to the latest episode of Papa's Basement in your browser (and here to give us your money via Patreon). iTunes Google Podcasts Spotify Stitcher YouTube Follow this episode's cast on Twitter and Instagram. Reviewing Netflix’s Space Force and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga
Netflix has two new offerings poised to court fans of Steve Carell and Will Ferrell: Space Force, an original series starring Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and countless other big names, brought to us by The Office showrunner Greg Daniels. And Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga, an original film starring Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Pierce Brosnan, and my Greek future bride, Melissanthi Mahut. Is either worth your time? I mean, like, your pre-quarantine time, when you had options and didn’t view the mailman coming by as the highlight of the day. Chris D’elia’s No Good Very Bad Day — Episode 648
I apologize, because I didn't think this material was too dated, so I took forever to upload it. Then, I remembered it was about comedian Chris D'elia getting accused by a bunch of girls of hitting on them while they were underage. Which happened a few weeks ago. Forgive the delay. A Call From Mike Sacks, Ocean City’s Wayward Son — Episode 647
Author, comedian, and all-around mensch Mike Sacks joins us to talk about his latest project, the Amazon-exclusive novelization of Passable In Pink , his 80s-drenched, coming-of-age audio book that satirized Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, and every other work in the John Hughes canon. Hear what life has been like for this DMV-area transplant as he rides out quarantine in a Brooklyn apartment with his daughter, a pair of cats, and a browser window permanently open to the Thrasher’s French Fries camera on the Ocean City boardwalk. Has his OCD-driven work ethic and punk rock, DIY attitude been bested by the sounds of nightly fireworks, months without Orioles baseball, and flashbacks to the trauma of childhood trips to see the Capitol Steps? Only one way to find out...(by listening to the episode, in case that was too cryptic for you.) Amazon link to purchase the novelization of Passable In Pink by Mike Sacks.
