NightSide - Another Delay on Healthcare

The margin for error on the GOP Senate healthcare bill is essentially non-existent. Maine Senator Susan Collins and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul have already said they plan to vote no on the bill. That means that Republicans need every single other member of their party to vote yes in order to get to 50 votes. Over the weekend, Senator John McCain was forced to have surgery to remove a blood clot, and will not be returning to Washington this week. Without a yes vote from McCain, Republicans know this bill cannot pass, and therefore have delayed a vote for now. Should the GOP give up on its troubled healthcare proposal? After seven years of pledging to repeal Obamacare, would a failure to do so hurt Republicans at the polls in 2018? Former Senator Tom Coburn checks in with NightSide Nation to give us his thoughts.

NightSide - Is President Trump’s Public Flattery of Women Excessive?

President Trump is known to speak frankly in general, and when it comes to women, he pulls no punches in criticism or flattery. Recently, he’s been on record for complimenting French President Macron’s wife and an Irish reporter. He said to Macron’s wife “you’re in such good shape” and to the Irish journalist in the Oval Office that she had a “nice smile.” Does President Trump cross the line? Are his compliments genuine flattery that are overblown?

NightSide - Is Boston Rent Too High?

Finding affordable rent is a challenge for prospective apartment seekers in major cities, especially here in Boston. Based on a list from Smart Asset, Boston ranks third after New York and San Francisco, for the income needed to pay rent. Rising rents and stagnant wages creates a burden for locals and prospective transplants. Should there be more done at the federal level? Is it just an economic reality we have to face?

NightSide - GOP Reveals New Healthcare Bill

Republicans in the Senate have released the new healthcare bill, with a vote expected as soon as next week. The new bill includes an amendment similar to what Senator Cruz has proposed, which would allow insurance companies to sell plans that do not meet the minimum requirements established under the Affordable Care Act. The revised bill also keeps in place some of the taxes from the Affordable Care Act that the House version had removed. Do these changes to the bill tip your opinion of it one way or the other? Do you want the GOP healthcare bill to pass?

NightSide - Donald Trump Jr. Defends Himself

Last night, Donald Trump Jr. joined Sean Hannity on Fox News to discuss the email chain he tweeted out earlier in the day. During the ten-minute segment, Trump Jr. explained why he took the meeting, why there was no follow up, and stated that there were no other official meetings with any other Russians during the campaign. Now that he has had a chance to present his side of the issue, we want to hear from you! Did you find Trump Jr.’s explanation to be believable? Or do you think he is trying to spin a bad situation? Is this whole story a big Nothing Burger, as White House chief of staff Reince Priebus recently claimed?

NightSide - Should Massachusetts Switch to Same-Day Registration?

Right now, Massachusetts residents must register to vote at least twenty days before the election. But a recent lawsuit filed by the ACLU is looking to change that requirement, claiming that it puts an unfair burden on potential voters. Do you think Massachusetts should allow voters to register on Election Day? Or are you ok with a deadline that closes registration three weeks before voters head to the polls?

NightSide - How Serious is the North Korean Threat?

Last Tuesday, while the U.S. was celebrating Independence Day, North Korea conducted a successful missile test, launching an intercontinental ballistic missile that some claim could reach Alaska. Tonight, Dan is joined by Dr. Jack Liu, longtime contractor for the Department of Defense and one of the nation’s preeminent experts on North Korea. He’ll break down what we saw last week, both in terms of the missile test and the rest of the world’s response. Do you worry about getting into a military conflict with North Korea?

NightSide - Donald Trump Jr. Releases Email Chain

Donald Trump Jr. published the email chain that led to a June 2016 meeting between himself, Paul Manafort (who later became campaign director), Jared Kushner, and a Russian lawyer. The emails show that Trump Jr. was promised damaging information on Hillary Clinton provided by the Russian government as part of Russia’s effort to get Trump elected. Is this the smoking gun that Democrats have been looking for? Or is this yet another fake news story that is being spun out of proportion by a party that can’t get over losing last November? Is being open to sources that have opposition research simply part of normal campaign operations? Where do we go from here?

NightSide - Let The Parents Decide

Charlie Gard is a British child that has been hospitalized in London after it was discovered that he has infantile-onset encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition that is considered to be terminal. Charlie’s parents would like to bring him to the United States for an experimental treatment, but doctors in London have fought against this, stating that the treatment would result in significant harm and suffering to the child with no realistic hope of benefit or improvement. Should the parents get the final say in how their child is treated, or should doctors be allowed to dictate what is best for the patient?

NightSide - NPR – Numerous Pay Raises

National Public Radio often asks listeners for contributions to support its non-profit model. There are also numerous grants and programs that help fund public broadcasting stations with taxpayer money. But a new look at how much both on-air and off-air employees make has caused some to take a step back and ask whether that money is being put to good use. Joe Battenfeld, Boston Herald columnist, joins Dan in studio to talk about some of these outrageous numbers locally and nationally, and whether it is fair to use taxpayer money to pay these salaries.

NightSide - When Will Democrats Let It Go?

President Trump has returned from a successful trip abroad that included a well-received speech in Poland and a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin, during which the President confronted the Russian leader over the nation’s alleged efforts to influence the 2016 election. Yet all Democrats can talk about is an inconsequential meeting between President Trump’s son Donald Trump, Jr. and a Russian lawyer that took place a year ago. Will Democrats ever give up this relentless protest against Trump and accept him as our President? Or will they continue to push this narrative despite not having any evidence against Trump or his associates? Does anyone really believe that Putin prefers Trump over Hillary Clinton as President?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - Will ObamaCare Finally be Overturned?

There’s been much mulling amongst republicans over the Senate bill after the CBO stated McConnell’s initial proposal would cause 22 million Americans to lose insurance by 2026. The democrats are pushing health care for all, and with the ending of an entitlement program that was only successful once last century, it may prove hard to get the repeal. Will a repeal and replace be the outcome or perhaps nothing at all?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - President Trump Speaks From Poland

President Trump delivered a speech in Warsaw, Poland that focused on dealing with terrorism in our modern world. “The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive,” the President declared in front of a large, friendly crowd. Trump went on to criticize Russia’s “destabilizing activities”, though he would not say for sure whether Russia attempted to undermine the 2016 U.S. election. While some on the left felt he wasn’t hard enough on Russia on the eve of the President’s meeting with Vladimir Putin, many thought the speech was one of the President’s stronger moments to date. What did you think of the President’s remarks today? Do you agree with the strong stance on immigration taken by President Trump? Are you confident that Trump can hold his own during his meeting with Putin tomorrow?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - North Korea Flexes Its Muscles

North Korea tested an ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile), generating a lot of global attention. The missile could supposedly reach Alaska, which would make the military threat posed by North Korea’s developing nuclear program much more significant. President Trump has responded by criticizing China for failing to help put pressure on the oppressive regime, and has said in the past that he would not take a pre-emptive strike off the table. Do you worry about the threat posed by North Korea? Would we be making a mistake by starting yet another war? Or do you think it could become necessary to protect our safety?

NightSide - Misogyny in Politics

What can we do to make politics more welcoming to women? Marisa DeFranco continues her open letter to the media.

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - Be a Leader Not a Tweeter

North Korea has conveniently launched a long-range missile test on the eve of Independence Day, which prompted tweets from President Trump. Part of it reads, “Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?” and he includes his stance of Japan and South Korea in his stream of thought. Marisa believes that he shouldn’t undercut our allies and that it isn’t leader-like. Do you respect President Trump’s expressive take on this matter or find it out of line for presidential etiquette?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - Evan Falchuk Checks In

Joining Marisa in studio is Evan Falchuk, who ran for Massachusetts Governor as an independent in 2014 and is now a democrat. He formed the “United Independent Party” as its own party, but it lost official party status in 2016 and now it has become a designation. They will discuss the division of parties and about Evan’s efforts to make the system better. Do you think having different parties leads to more division in society?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - Trump News Versus Real News

The mainstream media’s coverage of President Trump is oversaturated and it drowns out the other important stories that can help unify this country better. How would someone in Massachusetts empathize with Ohio citizens’ issues and vice versa? Should there be more focus on the other branches of government besides Trump-mania?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - Exposing the Political Hypocrisy

Politicians are well-known for being measured and pointed in conveying their political views, but more often than we realize, they end up contradicting themselves. Case in point, we have Representative Seth Moulton, who oozed effusive praise to Nancy Pelosi in a three-page letter, only to oppose Pelosi’s leadership after the Republicans took the reins in the election. Joining Marisa is Peter Lucas, longtime columnist for the Boston Globe and currently the Lowell Sun, for a spirited discussion on Moulton, Governor Baker, the ‘RINO’ and also the Marijuana bill.

NightSide - When Does Inclusion Become Intolerance?

Last weekend, Chicago hosted a number of LGBTQ Pride events and parades. One such parade, which calls itself the Dyke March, touts that it is even “more inclusive” than the official annual pride parade. Yet three women were turned away and barred from marching this year over a rainbow pride flag that included a Star of David in the center. Laurie Grauer, one of the marchers who was asked to leave, says she has always celebrated her Jewish heritage as well as her LGBTQ pride. She checks in with Dan to explain why she was asked to leave and her thoughts on the “inclusive” event.

NightSide - Trump’s Tweets Under Fire Again

President Trump has said all along that he did not plan on dialing back his Twitter activity once he was sworn in as President. He has taken some criticism over tweets in the past, but today the backlash reached a new level. After MSNBC morning show co-host Mika Brzezinski made some pointed remarks attacking the President this morning, Trump took to Twitter to respond. The President tweeted, “I heard poorly rated Morning Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!” Did the President go too far? Or is the liberal mainstream media just using one more bogus story to attack Trump yet again?

Listen: podcast - audio/mpeg

NightSide - Susan Rice Plays the Blame Game

Susan Rice, who has found herself under heavy criticism over her role in unmasking names of U.S. citizens while serving under President Obama, recently talked about the personal attacks launched on her by the right in an interview with New York Magazine. During the discussion, Rice claims that her gender and race could be a part of why she has taken so much heat from Republicans. At least she didn’t blame it on a video! Do you buy Rice’s claim that the criticism is due to sexism and racism? Or is that simply an excuse she’s using to try to deflect attention away from her role in unmasking names?

NightSide - Are Boston Drivers Really That Bad?

Allstate has released a report ranking drivers in 200 of the nation’s largest cities, and you’ll never guess where Boston ranks! The report compares the average amount of time between insurance claims in each city, with Boston drivers filing a claim about every three and a half years on average. That puts our fine city dead last on the list, the third year in a row that Boston has been given that distinction. Do you think Boston drivers are really that bad, or do we get a bad rap?

NightSide - Who Will Save Nancy Pelosi?

With the contentious 2016 election behind us, there was hope that the two parties would put aside their petty differences and come together to work on behalf of Americans everywhere. But so far, we have seen the partisan divide tearing this country apart deepen rather than disappear. With the Democrats unable to win any of the special elections held following President Trump’s inauguration, some have questioned the party’s message and leadership. Tonight, Dan shares his concern for Minority House Leader Nancy Pelosi’s future. Who out there will step up and fight to save her?

NightSide - Could We Handle A Nuclear Attack?

Recently, we have seen more and more small-scale terror attacks, often carried out by one or two individuals. But are we prepared to handle a larger-scale attack involving nuclear weapons? With both Iran and North Korea getting closer and closer to obtaining nukes, that test could come sooner than we realize. Author Robert Gleason joins Dan to talk about the fallout of a nuclear attack here in the U.S. and whether we are prepared to handle the aftermath. Should we be doing more to prepare for this type of terrorist attack? Could it happen here in the U.S.?

<a href="http://nuclearterrorist.com/" target="_blank">http://nuclearterrorist.com/</a>

NightSide - POTUS’ Claim of Fake News Vindicated

CNN, often a target in President Trump’s ongoing battle against the mainstream media, is apologizing for a story that appeared on its website last Thursday. The story connected a member of the Trump transition team to the Russian Direct Investment Fund. The story, which cited an anonymous source, has since been retracted and removed from the web. Three journalists from CNN are also leaving the network due to their roles in writing and publishing the story. Does this response show that CNN is willing to admit a mistake and take corrective action? Or does this prove that there is an anti-Trump bias driving the mainstream media?

NightSide - Could Tong Ren Healing Be The Answer

Medical science has made extraordinary progress over the last few decades. But sometimes, traditional medicine can only go so far. What do you do when the normal, typical approach isn’t enough? For some, Tong Ren has provided an answer. Dr. Eleanor Marks, a former Boston University professor, decided sixteen years ago to leave the world of academia and become an expert in Tong Ren healing. Dr. Marks and one of her success stories, Julie Kalustian, join Dan in the NightSide studio to talk about alternative healing and to take your questions.

The Hollywood actor made a provocative statement at a Britain festival saying, “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” His attempts to amuse the crowd drew a response from The White House condemning his statement. He has apologized, but the damage is already done. Did Johnny go overboard?

NightSide - Dr. George on the Senate GOP Health Care Bill

The Senate healthcare bill is now under negotiation and a 142-page proposal is out. There is disagreement amongst Republican senators like Paul and Cruz, and the democrats call it a “meaner” version of the House bill. Dr. Elaina George, a certified otolaryngologist and an outspoken advocate for repealing ObamaCare, joins Dan to discuss the Senate version and explains who benefits and who doesn’t.

NightSide - State Marijuana Law

House lawmakers passed a bill the other night that will tax marijuana products at 28 percent. The rub is that it’s more than double the 12 percent tax rate of the Senate version and the House version allows government officials to ban marijuana shops from town. NightSide - Democrats Lose Another Special Election

Democrats were handed a major loss in the special election to replace Tom Price as Representative for Georgia’s Sixth District. With so much negative press being thrown at President Trump’s administration, many thought the Democrats would be able to turn the tide in the traditionally red district. This loss is just the most recent in a string of special elections that Democrats have so far failed to use to their advantage. The race came with a total price tag of fifty million dollars, and proved that the Republican strategy of attacking Nancy Pelosi is still an effective approach. Many are expecting the 2018 midterm elections to be a big win for Democrats, but is the left headed for disappointment at the polls? Has Democratic leadership failed to learn any lessons from the 2016 election? What does the party need to do to turn things around?

NightSide - Back To Politics As Usual

The Washington Post published a story yesterday that claims President Trump is now under investigation for obstruction of justice, according to five unnamed sources. There are also reports that former Attorney General Loretta Lynch will be investigated over her handling of the Clinton email investigation, but of course that hasn’t received anywhere near the same amount of coverage. Are you surprised that The Washington Post is once again running a negative story about President Trump based on anonymous sources? Should the investigation into Loretta Lynch’s handling of Clinton’s email investigation be getting more traction? Is the President correct that the mainstream media is just running with the hyperbole and hysteria of the left?

NightSide - Shots Fired, Congressman Hit

Many have expressed concern in recent years over the escalating political rhetoric on both sides of the aisle. Today, that anger boiled over, and a gunman shot at a number of Republican Congressmen while they were participating in a baseball practice. Representative Steve Scalise was hit and is reportedly in critical-but-stable condition. The alleged gunman had volunteered for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, and his social media accounts showed strong anti-Trump and anti-Republican sentiments. Has our political dialogue become dangerously divisive? Do acts like Kathy Griffin’s decapitation stunt and the NYC Julius Caesar / President Trump assassination scene provide inspiration or rationale for those already on the edge? How can we stop this type of violence from occurring?

NightSide - The Case For More Guns

Sheriff Wayne Ivey, of Brevard County, Florida, has gotten a wide range of reactions to his recent comments that in order to protect themselves from possible terrorist attacks, more people should own and carry guns. The debate over whether “a good guy with a gun” is the best way to stop “a bad guy with a gun” has been a hot issue for years in this country. Sheriff Ivey says that while waiting for emergency responders to arrive during an attack, it is up to individual citizens to neutralize or eliminate the threat. Sheriff Ivey checks in with Dan and the rest of NightSide Nation to explain why he believes an armed and well-prepared citizenry is an important first line of defense in these tumultuous times. Do you agree with Sheriff Ivey? Or do you think this is fear-mongering that encourages vigilante justice?

NightSide - Now It’s Sessions’ Turn

Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified today for the Senate Intelligence Committee, the same committee that heard testimony from former FBI Director James Comey last week.
